संभवः सूचितो देव्यास त्वया सूत महामते। सविस्तरं वदस्वाद्य सतीत्वे च यथातथम।।
saṃbhavaḥ sūcito devyās tvayā sūta mahāmate| savistaraṃ vadasvādya satītve ca yathātatham||
The sages said: O Sūta of great intellect, the origin of the goddess has been indicated by you. Now, mention in detail her birth as the daughter of Menā after her self immolation as Sati in the previous birth and then the destruction of Dakṣa’s sacrifice. How was she given to Śiva, the lord of Devas, by Viṣṇu?

मेनाजत्वं महादेव्या दक्षयज्ञविमर्दनम। विष्णुना च कथं दत्ता देवदेवाय शंभवे।।
menājatvaṃ mahādevyā dakṣayajñavimardanam| viṣṇunā ca kathaṃ dattā devadevāya śaṃbhave||
The sages said: O Sūta of great intellect, the origin of the goddess has been indicated by you. Now, mention in detail her birth as the daughter of Menā after her self immolation as Sati in the previous birth and then the destruction of Dakṣa’s sacrifice. How was she given to Śiva, the lord of Devas, by Viṣṇu?

kalyāṇaṃ vā kathaṃ tasya vaktumarhasi sāṃpratam| teṣāṃ tadvacanaṃ śrutvā sūtaḥ paurāṇikottamaḥ||
The sages said: How was her marriage with him? It behoves you to narrate all this to us now.

वचनाद्वो महाभागाः प्रणम्योमां तथा भवम। सा भगाख्या जगद्धात्री लिङ्गमूर्तेस्त्रिवेदिका।।
vacanādvo mahābhāgāḥ praṇamyomāṃ tathā bhavam| sā bhagākhyā jagaddhātrī liṅgamūrtestrivedikā||
Sūta said: O highly blessed ones, at your entreaty I shall mention it to you after bowing down to Umā and Śiva.

liṅgastu bhagavāndvābhyāṃ jagatsṛṣṭirdvijottamāḥ| liṅgamūrtiḥ śivo jyotis tamasaścopari sthitaḥ||

लिङ्गवेदिसमायोगाद अर्धनारीश्वरोभवत। ब्रह्माणं विदधे देवम अग्रे पुत्रं चतुर्मुखम।।
liṅgavedisamāyogād ardhanārīśvarobhavat| brahmāṇaṃ vidadhe devam agre putraṃ caturmukham||
Sūta said: īn view of the union of Liṅga and pedestal he became Ardhanārīśvara (lord with the form of a woman in one half). At the outset he created his son Brahma the four-faced lord.[1]

प्राहिणोति स्म तस्यैव ज्ञानं ज्ञानमयो हरः। विश्वाधिको ऽसौ भगवान अर्धनारीश्वरो विभुः।।
prāhiṇoti sma tasyaiva jñānaṃ jñānamayo haraḥ| viśvādhiko 'sau bhagavān ardhanārīśvaro vibhuḥ||
Sūta said: Śiva who excels the whole universe, the lord Ardhanārīśvara, full of knowledge, granted knowledge to Brahma.

हिरण्यगर्भं तं देवो जायमानमपश्यत। सो ऽपि रुद्रं महादेवं ब्रह्मापश्यत शङ्करम।।
hiraṇyagarbhaṃ taṃ devo jāyamānamapaśyata| so 'pi rudraṃ mahādevaṃ brahmāpaśyata śaṅkaram||
Sūta said: The lord Śiva saw Brahmā being born. Brahma too saw Rudra, Śaṅkara and Mahādeva.

तं दृष्ट्वा संस्थितं देवम अर्धनारीश्वरं प्रभुम। तुष्टाव वाग्भिर इष्टाभिर वरदं वारिजोद्भवः।।
taṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃsthitaṃ devam ardhanārīśvaraṃ prabhum| tuṣṭāva vāgbhir iṣṭābhir varadaṃ vārijodbhavaḥ||
Sūta said: On seeing the lord Ardhanārīśvara stationed there, the lotus-born deity eulogised Śiva, the bestower of the boons, by means of pleasing words.

विभजस्वेति विश्वेशं विश्वात्मानमजो विभुः। ससर्ज देवीं वामाङ्गात पत्नीं चैवात्मनः समाम।।
vibhajasveti viśveśaṃ viśvātmānamajo vibhuḥ| sasarja devīṃ vāmāṅgāt patnīṃ caivātmanaḥ samām||
Sūta said: The unborn lord requested the lord the soul of the universe, by saying “Divide yourself.” He created the goddess from the left side of his body as his befitting wife.

श्रद्धा ह्यस्य शुभा पत्नी ततः पुंसः पुरातनी। सैवाज्ञया विभोर्देवी दक्षपुत्री बभूव ह।।
śraddhā hyasya śubhā patnī tataḥ puṃsaḥ purātanī| saivājñayā vibhordevī dakṣaputrī babhūva ha||
Sūta said: This ancient splendid lady, viz:—Śraddhā,[2] became the daughter of Dakṣa at the behest of the lord.

सतीसंज्ञा तदा सा वै रुद्रमेवाश्रिता पतिम। दक्षं विनिन्द्य कालेन देवी मैना ह्यभूत्पुनः।।
satīsaṃjñā tadā sā vai rudramevāśritā patim| dakṣaṃ vinindya kālena devī mainā hyabhūtpunaḥ||
Sūta said: At that time, her name was Satī. She resorted to Rudra alone as her husband. In course of time, she rebuked Dakṣa. The goddess then became the daughter of Menā.

नारदस्यैव दक्षो ऽपि शापादेवं विनिन्द्य च। अवज्ञादुर्मदो दक्षो देवदेवमुमापतिम।।
nāradasyaiva dakṣo 'pi śāpādevaṃ vinindya ca| avajñādurmado dakṣo devadevamumāpatim||
Sūta said: It was due to the curse of Nārada that Dakṣa also was prompted to censure them. The haughty Dakṣa, dishonoured the lord of Umā contemptuously. When Satī came to know of this action of her father Dakṣa, by her yogic power she reduced her body to ashes.[3] Later she was born as goddess Pārvatī, the daughter of the lord of the mountains, and performed penance. On coming to know of this and at the instance of the son of Cyavana, the infuriated lord Bharga destroyed the extensive sacrifice of Dakṣa. The son of Cyavana was the well-known and intelligent Dadhīca. Thanks to the grace of the three-eyed lord, the leading sage conquered Viṣṇu in battle and cursed Devas along with Viṣṇu: “O Devas, your imminent destruction is by the fire originating from Rudra’s anger, due to the Māyā of Śaṅkara, the great lord.

अनादृत्य कृतिं ज्ञात्वा सती दक्षेण तत्क्षणात। भस्मीकृत्वात्मनो देहं योगमार्गेण सा पुनः।।
anādṛtya kṛtiṃ jñātvā satī dakṣeṇa tatkṣaṇāt| bhasmīkṛtvātmano dehaṃ yogamārgeṇa sā punaḥ||
Sūta said: It was due to the curse of Nārada that Dakṣa also was prompted to censure them. The haughty Dakṣa, dishonoured the lord of Umā contemptuously. When Satī came to know of this action of her father Dakṣa, by her yogic power she reduced her body to ashes.[3] Later she was born as goddess Pārvatī, the daughter of the lord of the mountains, and performed penance. vijitya viṣṇuṃ samare prasādāt tryaṃbakasya ca| viṣṇunā lokapālāṃś ca śaśāpa ca munīśvaraḥ||

रुद्रस्य क्रोधजेनैव वह्निना हविषा सुराः। विनाशो वै क्षणादेव मायया शङ्करस्य वै।।
rudrasya krodhajenaiva vahninā haviṣā surāḥ| vināśo vai kṣaṇādeva māyayā śaṅkarasya vai||
