The sages said: O Romaharṣaṇa of good holy rites, it behoves you to tell us how lord Hara the destroyer of the eyes of Bhaga, having matted hairs, killed Jalandhara whose exploit was like that of Indra.

jalandhareśayostena nirjito madhusūdanaḥ| jalandharo 'pi taṃ jitvā devadevaṃ janārdanam||
Sūta said: Lord Viṣṇu was defeated by him. After defeating Viṣṇu the lord of Devas, Jalandhara said to the sons of Diti, “To conquer Śiva is only a justifiable thought. All the rest have been conquered by me in the battle. Only Siva has not been conquered by me. O leading Dānavas, after conquering him within a short while along with Nandin and the leaders of the Gaṇas, I shall distribute among you the position of Śiva, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Indra.”

प्रोवाचेदं दितेः पुत्रान न्यायधीर्जेतुमीश्वरम। सर्वे जिता मया युद्धे शङ्करो ह्यजितो रणे।।
provācedaṃ diteḥ putrān nyāyadhīrjetumīśvaram| sarve jitā mayā yuddhe śaṅkaro hyajito raṇe||
Sūta said: Lord Viṣṇu was defeated by him. After defeating Viṣṇu the lord of Devas, Jalandhara said to the sons of Diti, “To conquer Śiva is only a justifiable thought. All the rest have been conquered by me in the battle. Only Siva has not been conquered by me. O leading Dānavas, after conquering him within a short while along with Nandin and the leaders of the Gaṇas, I shall distribute among you the position of Śiva, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Indra.”

तं जित्वा सर्वमीशानं गणपैर नन्दिना क्षणात। अहमेव भवत्वं च ब्रह्मत्वं वैष्णवं तथा।।

संनद्धैः सह संनह्य शर्वं प्रति ययौ बली। भवो ऽपि दृष्ट्वा दैत्येन्द्रं मेरुकूटमिव स्थितम।।
saṃnaddhaiḥ saha saṃnahya śarvaṃ prati yayau balī| bhavo 'pi dṛṣṭvā daityendraṃ merukūṭamiva sthitam||
Sūta said: Śiva saw the leader of the Daityas stationed on the peak of the Meru. He had already heard about his indestructibility through others. The destroyer of the eyes of Bhaga, the lord and protector of the worlds wanted to keep his promise to Brahmā. He was accompanied by Ambā and Nandin and his Gaṇas. He said laughingly:—“O lord of Asuras, what purpose shall be served now with a fight?

madbāṇairbhinnasarvāṅgo martumabhyudyate mudā| jalandharo 'pi tadvākyaṃ śrutvā śrotravidāraṇam||
Sūta said: You have joyously attempted to die with your limbs pierced and split by my arrows.”

सुरेश्वरमुवाचेदं सुरेतरबलेश्वरः। वाक्येनालं महाबाहो देवदेव वृषध्वज।।
sureśvaramuvācedaṃ suretarabaleśvaraḥ| vākyenālaṃ mahābāho devadeva vṛṣadhvaja||
Sūta said: You have joyously attempted to die with your limbs pierced and split by my arrows.”

चन्द्रांशुसन्निभैः शस्त्रैर हर योद्धुमिहागतः। निशम्यास्य वचः शूली पादाङ्गुष्ठेन लीलया। महांभसि चकाराशु रथाङ्गं रौद्रमायुधम।।
candrāṃśusannibhaiḥ śastrair hara yoddhumihāgataḥ| niśamyāsya vacaḥ śūlī pādāṅguṣṭhena līlayā| mahāṃbhasi cakārāśu rathāṅgaṃ raudramāyudham||
Sūta said: You have joyously attempted to die with your limbs pierced and split by my arrows.”

कृत्वार्णवांभसि सितं भगवान रथाङ्गं स्मृत्वा जगत्त्रयमनेन हताः सुराश च। दक्षान्धकान्तकपुरत्रययज्ञहर्ता लोकत्रयान्तककरः प्रहसंतदाह।।
kṛtvārṇavāṃbhasi sitaṃ bhagavān rathāṅgaṃ smṛtvā jagattrayamanena hatāḥ surāś ca| dakṣāndhakāntakapuratrayayajñahartā lokatrayāntakakaraḥ prahasaṃtadāha||
Sūta said: After making the sharp features of the discus on the water-surface of the ocean the lord thought that the three worlds and Devas had been killed by him. The destroyer of Dakṣa, Andhaka, An taka, Tripuras, the sacrifice and the annihilator of the three worlds said laughingly.

पादेन निर्मितं दैत्य जलन्धर महार्णवे। बलवान यदि चोद्धर्तुं तिष्ठ योद्धुं न चान्यथा।।
pādena nirmitaṃ daitya jalandhara mahārṇave| balavān yadi coddhartuṃ tiṣṭha yoddhuṃ na cānyathā||
Sūta said: “O Jalandhara, O Asura, if you are strong enough to lift up the weapon evolved by me by my leg, stand face to face for fighting, and not otherwise”

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा क्रोधेनादीप्तलोचनः। प्रदहन्निव नेत्राभ्यां प्राहालोक्य जगत्त्रयम।।
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā krodhenādīptalocanaḥ| pradahanniva netrābhyāṃ prāhālokya jagattrayam||
Sūta said: “O Jalandhara, O Asura, if you are strong enough to lift up the weapon evolved by me by my leg, stand face to face for fighting, and not otherwise”

गदामुद्धृत्य हत्वा च नन्दिनं त्वां च शङ्कर। हत्वा लोकान्सुरैः सार्धं डुण्डुभान गरुडो यथा।।
gadāmuddhṛtya hatvā ca nandinaṃ tvāṃ ca śaṅkara| hatvā lokānsuraiḥ sārdhaṃ ḍuṇḍubhān garuḍo yathā||
Jalandhara said: O Śaṅkara, I will lift up my iron club and kill Nandin as well as you. Even as Garuḍa kills the water snakes I will destroy the worlds along with Devas. I am competent to annihilate all mobile and immobile beings, including Indra. O Maheśvara, who is there in the three worlds who cannot be pierced by my arrows?

हन्तुं चराचरं सर्वं समर्थो ऽहं सवासवम। को महेश्वर मद्बाणैर अच्छेद्यो भुवनत्रये।।
hantuṃ carācaraṃ sarvaṃ samartho 'haṃ savāsavam| ko maheśvara madbāṇair acchedyo bhuvanatraye||
Jalandhara said: O Śaṅkara, I will lift up my iron club and kill Nandin as well as you. Even as Garuḍa kills the water snakes I will destroy the worlds along with Devas. बालभावे च भगवान तपसैव विनिर्जितः। ब्रह्मा बली यौवने वै मुनयः सुरपुङ्गवैः।।
bālabhāve ca bhagavān tapasaiva vinirjitaḥ| brahmā balī yauvane vai munayaḥ surapuṅgavaiḥ||
Jalandhara said: Even during my childhood, the lord was defeated by my penance. The powerful Brahmā, and the sages along with the leading Devas were defeated during my youth.

दग्धं क्षणेन सकलं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम। तपसा किं त्वया रुद्र निर्जितो भगवानपि।।
dagdhaṃ kṣaṇena sakalaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram| tapasā kiṃ tvayā rudra nirjito bhagavānapi||
Jalandhara said: Within a short while, the three worlds consisting of the mobile and immobile beings were burnt by me. O Rudra, was any lord defeated by you by means of penance?

इन्द्राग्नियमवित्तेश- वायुवारीश्वरादयः। न सेहिरे यथा नागा गन्धं पक्षिपतेरिव।।
indrāgniyamavitteśa- vāyuvārīśvarādayaḥ| na sehire yathā nāgā gandhaṃ pakṣipateriva||
Jalandhara said: Just as the serpents cannot bear even the odour of Garuḍa, the lord of the birds, so also Indra, Agni, Yama, Kubera, Vāyu, Varuṇa and others cannot bear me.

न लब्ध्वा दिवि भूमौ च बाहवो मम शङ्कर। समस्तान्पर्वतान्प्राप्य घर्षिताश च गणेश्वर।।
na labdhvā divi bhūmau ca bāhavo mama śaṅkara| samastānparvatānprāpya gharṣitāś ca gaṇeśvara||
Jalandhara said: O Śaṅkara, neither in the heaven nor on the earth could my arms get rival. O lord of the Gaṇas, I have gone to all the mountains and attacked them.
Death of Jalandhara - Verse 26

गिरीन्द्रो मन्दरः श्रीमान नीलो मेरुः सुशोभनः। घर्षितो बाहुदण्डेन कण्डूनोदार्थम आपतत।।
girīndro mandaraḥ śrīmān nīlo meruḥ suśobhanaḥ| gharṣito bāhudaṇḍena kaṇḍūnodārtham āpatat||
Jalandhara said: Mandara[1] the lord of the mountains, the glorious Nila[2] and the splendid Meru[3] have been attacked by me with my staff-like arms. The mountain Meru fell when I scratched it with arms for removing their itching sensation.

गङ्गा निरुद्धा बाहुभ्यां लीलार्थं हिमवद्गिरौ। नारीणां मम भृत्यैश च वज्रो बद्धो दिवौकसाम।।
gaṅgā niruddhā bāhubhyāṃ līlārthaṃ himavadgirau| nārīṇāṃ mama bhṛtyaiś ca vajro baddho divaukasām||
Jalandhara said: Just for a sport, the Gaṅgā was restrained with my arms on the mountain Himavān. A group of celestial women was caught and imprisoned by my servants.

वडवाया मुखं भग्नं गृहीत्वा वै करेण तु। तत्क्षणादेव सकलं चैकार्णवमभूदिदम।।
vaḍavāyā mukhaṃ bhagnaṃ gṛhītvā vai kareṇa tu| tatkṣaṇādeva sakalaṃ caikārṇavamabhūdidam||
Jalandhara said: The mouth of the submarine fire was held by me and choked with the hand. Instantaneously all this was turned into a vast sheet of water.

ऐरावतादयो नागाः क्षिप्ताः सिन्धुजलोपरि। सरथो भगवानिन्द्रः क्षिप्तश च शतयोजनम।।
airāvatādayo nāgāḥ kṣiptāḥ sindhujalopari| saratho bhagavānindraḥ kṣiptaś ca śatayojanam||
Jalandhara said: Airāvata and other elephants were cast off by me into the water of the ocean. Lord Indra was hurled a hundred yojanas along with his chariot.

गरुडो ऽपि मया बद्धो नागपाशेन विष्णुना। उर्वश्याद्या मया नीता नार्यः कारागृहान्तरम।।
garuḍo 'pi mayā baddho nāgapāśena viṣṇunā| urvaśyādyā mayā nītā nāryaḥ kārāgṛhāntaram||
Jalandhara said: Garuḍa too was bound by me along with Viṣṇu by means of Nāgapāśa. Urvaśī and other women were imprisoned by me.
Death of Jalandhara - Verse 31

कथंचिल्लब्धवान शक्रः शचीमेकां प्रणम्य माम। मां न जानासि दैत्येन्द्रं जलन्धरमुमापते।।
kathaṃcillabdhavān śakraḥ śacīmekāṃ praṇamya mām| māṃ na jānāsi daityendraṃ jalandharamumāpate||
Jalandhara said: With very great difficulty Indra got back Śacī alone after bowing down to me. O lord of Umā, you do not know me, Jalandhara the leader of the Daityas.
Death of Jalandhara - Verse 32

एवमुक्तो महादेवः प्रादहद्वै रथं तदा। तस्य नेत्राग्निभागैक- कलार्धार्धेन चाकुलम।।
evamukto mahādevaḥ prādahadvai rathaṃ tadā| tasya netrāgnibhāgaika- kalārdhārdhena cākulam||
Sūta said: Mahādeva who was addressed thus, burned his chariot then with the fire of his eye.[4]
Death of Jalandhara - Verse 33

दैत्यानामतुलबलैर्हयैश च नागैर दैत्येन्द्रास त्रिपुररिपोर निरीक्षणेन। नागाद वैशसम अनुसंवृतश च नागैर देवेशं वचनमुवाच चाल्पबुद्धिः।।
daityānāmatulabalairhayaiś ca nāgair daityendrās tripuraripor nirīkṣaṇena| nāgād vaiśasam anusaṃvṛtaś ca nāgair deveśaṃ vacanamuvāca cālpabuddhiḥ||
Sūta said: Since the lord of the Daityas was surrounded by the invincible army of the Daityas, consisting of the horses, elephants and Nāgas, he did not undergo destruction by the fiery glance of the Tripuras. The silly and weak-minded Asura spoke to the lord of Devas thus.

किं कार्यं मम युधि देवदैत्यसंघैर हन्तुं यत्सकलमिदं क्षणात्समर्थः। यत्तस्माद्भयमिहनास्ति योद्धुम ईश वाञ्छैषा विपुलतरा न संशयो ऽत्र।।
kiṃ kāryaṃ mama yudhi devadaityasaṃghair hantuṃ yatsakalamidaṃ kṣaṇātsamarthaḥ| yattasmādbhayamihanāsti yoddhum īśa vāñchaiṣā vipulatarā na saṃśayo 'tra||
Sūta said: What purpose of mine can be served in the battle by the mutual clash of Devas and Asuras? I alone am competent to destroy all these in an instant. I have no fear of fighting. O Īśa, this is my earnest desire. Hence, O enemy of Kāma, Dakṣa, Yajña and Tripuras, if you have strength to fight with my heroes with the help of your leading Bhūtas and the monkey-faced Nandin, then you stand here to fight with me.

तस्मात्त्वं मम मदनारिदक्षशत्रो यज्ञारे त्रिपुररिपो ममैव वीरैः। भूतेन्द्रैर्हरिवदनेन देवसंघैर योद्धुं ते बलमिह चास्ति चेद्धि तिष्ठ।।
tasmāttvaṃ mama madanāridakṣaśatro yajñāre tripuraripo mamaiva vīraiḥ| bhūtendrairharivadanena devasaṃghair yoddhuṃ te balamiha cāsti ceddhi tiṣṭha||
Sūta said: What purpose of mine can be served in the battle by the mutual clash of Devas and Asuras? I alone am competent to destroy all these in an instant. I have no fear of fighting. O Īśa, this is my earnest desire. Hence, O enemy of Kāma, Dakṣa, Yajña and Tripuras, if you have strength to fight with my heroes with the help of your leading Bhūtas and the monkey-faced Nandin, then you stand here to fight with me.

Sūta said: After saying thus to Mahādeva, the great demon did not move nor did he think of his kins killed in battle.

durmadenāvinītātmā dorbhyāmāsphoṭya dorbalāt| sudarśanākhyaṃ yaccakraṃ tena hantuṃ samudyataḥ||
Sūta said: Urged by evil haughtiness that demon, of impolite nature clapped his hands together and then seized the discus called Sudarśana. He attempted to kill Śiva with that discus.

durdhareṇa rathāṅgena kṛcchreṇāpi dvijottamāḥ| sthāpayāmāsa vai skandhe dvidhābhūtaś ca tena vai||
Sūta said: O excellent brahmins, he placed the heavy discus on his shoulders with an effort. With that he was pierced into pieces.

Sūta said: O brahmins, just as the excellent mountain fell down when it was pierced by the thunderbolt of Indra so also the powerful Daitya fell down dead like a mountain of collyrium.

On seeing Jalandhara killed, Devas, Gandharvas and Pārṣadas made leonine shouts and cried: “O lord well done.” He who reads or listens to this story of the suppression of Jalandhara or he who narrates it duly will attain the leadership of the Gaṇas.
