The sages said: This holy rite that liberates Paśus (individual souls) from bondage [paśupāśa-vimokṣaṇa] has been mentioned by you. This holy rite of Paśupati pertaining to the Liṅga had been performed formerly by Devas. It behoves you to mention this to us in the manner you had heard it formerly.

भोगदं योगदं चैव कामदं मुक्तिदं शुभम। अवियोगकरं पुण्यं भक्तानां भयनाशनम।।
bhogadaṃ yogadaṃ caiva kāmadaṃ muktidaṃ śubham| aviyogakaraṃ puṇyaṃ bhaktānāṃ bhayanāśanam||
Sūta said: It yields worldly pleasures, liberation, yogic power and whatever one desires. It is auspicious, holy and conducive to perseverance and energetic efforts.[1] It destroys entanglement in worldly affairs in the case of devotees.

षडङ्गसहितान वेदान मथित्वा तेन निर्मितम। सर्वदानोत्तमं पुण्यम अश्वमेधायुताधिकम।।
ṣaḍaṅgasahitān vedān mathitvā tena nirmitam| sarvadānottamaṃ puṇyam aśvamedhāyutādhikam||
Sūta said: It has been evolved after churning the Vedas and their six ancillaries.[2] It excels all charitable gifts and is holier than ten thousand horse-sacrifices.

सर्वमङ्गलदं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम। संसारार्णवमग्नानां जन्तूनामपि मोक्षदम।।
sarvamaṅgaladaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaśatruvināśanam| saṃsārārṇavamagnānāṃ jantūnāmapi mokṣadam||
Sūta said: It is sacred, bestows all auspicious things, destroys all enemies, brings about salvation even to those creatures that are immersed in the ocean of worldly existence.

सर्वव्याधिहरं चैव सर्वज्वरविनाशनम। देवैरनुष्ठितं पूर्वं ब्रह्मणा विष्णुना तथा।।
sarvavyādhiharaṃ caiva sarvajvaravināśanam| devairanuṣṭhitaṃ pūrvaṃ brahmaṇā viṣṇunā tathā||
Sūta said: It dispels all sickness and destroys all fevers. It had been performed formerly by Devas as well as by Brahmā and Viṣṇu.

कृत्वा कनीयसं लिङ्गं स्नाप्य चन्दनवारिणा। चैत्रमासादि विप्रेन्द्राः शिवलिङ्गव्रतं चरेत।।
kṛtvā kanīyasaṃ liṅgaṃ snāpya candanavāriṇā| caitramāsādi viprendrāḥ śivaliṅgavrataṃ caret||
Sūta said: O leading brahmins, the devotee shall make a small Liṅga and bathe it with sandal water. Beginning in the month of Caitra he shall perform the holy rite of Śivaliṅga.

कृत्वा हैमं शुभं पद्मं कर्णिकाकेसरान्वितम। नवरत्नैश च खचितम अष्टपत्रं यथाविधि।।
kṛtvā haimaṃ śubhaṃ padmaṃ karṇikākesarānvitam| navaratnaiś ca khacitam aṣṭapatraṃ yathāvidhi||
Sūta said: He shall make an auspicious golden lotus with pericarp and filaments. It shall have eight petals duly studded with all the nine precious gems. He shall then fix the crystal Liṅga in the pericarp along with its pedestal. He shall then duly and devoutly worship it with Bilva leaves.

कर्णिकायां न्यसेल्लिङ्गं स्फाटिकं पीठसंयुतम। तत्र भक्त्या यथान्यायम अर्चयेद बिल्वपत्रकैः।।
karṇikāyāṃ nyaselliṅgaṃ sphāṭikaṃ pīṭhasaṃyutam| tatra bhaktyā yathānyāyam arcayed bilvapatrakaiḥ||

Sūta said: O sages of good holy rites, he shall worship the liṅga with thousands of white, red and blue lotuses, with white Arka, Karavīra, Karṇikāra and Kurabaka as well as with other flowers in accordance with their availability repeating the Gāyatrī. After adoring with scents, etc., with incense, with auspicious lamps and with Nīrājanas (wavings of lights) the devotee shall worship the great lord in Liṅga form. O excellent brahmins, he shall offer Aguru (agallochum) in the south by means of Aghora Mantra.

पश्चिमे सद्यमन्त्रेण दिव्यां चैव मनःशिलाम। उत्तरे वामदेवेन चन्दनं वापि दापयेत।।
paścime sadyamantreṇa divyāṃ caiva manaḥśilām| uttare vāmadevena candanaṃ vāpi dāpayet||
Sūta said: He shall offer the divine Manaḥśilā (red arsenic) in the west with the mantra of Sadyojāta, and sandal paste in the north with the Vāmadeva Mantra.

पुरुषेण मुनिश्रेष्ठा हरितालं च पूर्वतः। सितागरूद्भवं विप्रास तथा कृष्णागरूद्भवम।।
puruṣeṇa muniśreṣṭhā haritālaṃ ca pūrvataḥ| sitāgarūdbhavaṃ viprās tathā kṛṣṇāgarūdbhavam||
Sūta said: O excellent sages, he shall offer Haritāla (yellow orpiment) in the east by means of Tatpuruṣa. With devotion he shall offer the following varieties of incense, viz., that originating from white Aguru and black Aguru; then the Guggula dhūpa (aromatic gum resin), the excellent Saugandhika (fragrant incense) and the incense named Sitāra.

तथा गुग्गुलुधूपं च सौगन्धिकमनुत्तमम। सितारं नाम धूपं च दद्याद ईशाय भक्तितः।।
tathā gugguludhūpaṃ ca saugandhikamanuttamam| sitāraṃ nāma dhūpaṃ ca dadyād īśāya bhaktitaḥ||
Sūta said: O excellent sages, he shall offer Haritāla (yellow orpiment) in the east by means of Tatpuruṣa. With devotion he shall offer the following varieties of incense, viz., that originating from white Aguru and black Aguru; then the Guggula dhūpa (aromatic gum resin), the excellent Saugandhika (fragrant incense) and the incense named Sitāra.

mahācarurnivedyaḥ syād āḍhakānnamathāpi vā| etad vaḥ kathitaṃ puṇyaṃ śivaliṅgamahāvratam||
Sūta said: Mahācaru or an Āḍhaka measure of cooked rice should be offered as Naivedya. Thus, this great holy rite of Śivaliṅga has been narrated to you.

सर्वमासेषु सामान्यं विशेषो ऽपि च कीर्त्यते। वैशाखे वज्रलिङ्गं च ज्येष्ठे मारकतं तथा।।
sarvamāseṣu sāmānyaṃ viśeṣo 'pi ca kīrtyate| vaiśākhe vajraliṅgaṃ ca jyeṣṭhe mārakataṃ tathā||
Sūta said: All these are common to all months. I shall mention the particular features now:—The Liṅga shall be adamantine in Vaiśākha;[3] in Jyeṣṭha it shall be made of emerald; in Āṣāḍha of pearl; in Śrāvaṇa of lapis lazuli and in Bhādrapada of rubies. O leading brahmins, in Aśvina, the Liṅga shall be made of onyx; in Kārttika of coral; in Mārgaśīrṣa of lapis lazuli; in Pauṣa of topaz; in Māgha solar stone and in Phālguna of crystals.

āṣāḍhe mauktikaṃ liṅgaṃ śrāvaṇe nīlanirmitam| māsi bhādrapade liṅgaṃ padmarāgamayaṃ śubham||
Sūta said: All these are common to all months. I shall mention the particular features now:—The Liṅga shall be adamantine in Vaiśākha;[3] in Jyeṣṭha it shall be made of emerald; in Āṣāḍha of pearl; in Śrāvaṇa of lapis lazuli and in Bhādrapada of rubies. O leading brahmins, in Aśvina, the Liṅga shall be made of onyx; in Kārttika of coral; in Mārgaśīrṣa of lapis lazuli; in Pauṣa of topaz; in Māgha solar stone and in Phālguna of crystals.

Sūta said: All these are common to all months. सर्वमासेषु कमलं हैममेकं विधीयते। अलाभे राजतं वापि केवलं कमलं तु वा।।
sarvamāseṣu kamalaṃ haimamekaṃ vidhīyate| alābhe rājataṃ vāpi kevalaṃ kamalaṃ tu vā||
Sūta said: In all months one golden lotus shall be used for worship; if that is not available a silver lotus shall be used; if that too is not available ordinary lotus shall be used.

रत्नानाम अप्यलाभे तु हेम्ना वा राजतेन वा। रजतस्याप्यलाभे तु ताम्रलोहेन कारयेत।।
ratnānām apyalābhe tu hemnā vā rājatena vā| rajatasyāpyalābhe tu tāmralohena kārayet||
Sūta said: In all months one golden lotus shall be used for worship; if that is not available a silver lotus shall be used; if that too is not available ordinary lotus shall be used.

शैलं वा दारुजं वापि मृन्मयं वा सवेदिकम। सर्वगन्धमयं वापि क्षणिकं परिकल्पयेत।।
śailaṃ vā dārujaṃ vāpi mṛnmayaṃ vā savedikam| sarvagandhamayaṃ vāpi kṣaṇikaṃ parikalpayet||
Sūta said: The Liṅga can be made of rock, wood or clay along with its pedestal. Or he shall make a temporary Liṅga with fragrant substances.

हैमन्तिके महादेवं श्रीपत्त्रेणैव पूजयेत। सर्वमासेषु कमलं हैममेकमथापि वा।।
haimantike mahādevaṃ śrīpattreṇaiva pūjayet| sarvamāseṣu kamalaṃ haimamekamathāpi vā||
Sūta said: In the season of Hemanta (early winter) one shall worship Mahādeva with Śrīpatra[4] (Bilva leaves) alone. In all the months a lotus made of gold or a lotus made of silver with golden pericarp can be used. If silver lotus is not available he shall worship with Bilva leaves.

राजतं वापि कमलं हैमकर्णिकमुत्तमम। राजतस्याप्यभावे तु बिल्वपत्रैः समर्चयेत।।
rājataṃ vāpi kamalaṃ haimakarṇikamuttamam| rājatasyāpyabhāve tu bilvapatraiḥ samarcayet||
Sūta said: In the season of Hemanta (early winter) one shall worship Mahādeva with Śrīpatra[4] (Bilva leaves) alone. In all the months a lotus made of gold or a lotus made of silver with golden pericarp can be used. If silver lotus is not available he shall worship with Bilva leaves.

सहस्रकमलालाभे तदर्धेनापि पूजयेत। तदर्धार्धेन वा रुद्रम अष्टोत्तरशतेन वा।।
sahasrakamalālābhe tadardhenāpi pūjayet| tadardhārdhena vā rudram aṣṭottaraśatena vā||
Sūta said: If thousand lotuses are not available one shall worship with half that quantity; or he shall worship Rudra with a moiety of the said half or he shall worship with a hundred and eight lotuses.

बिल्वपत्रे स्थिता लक्ष्मीर देवी लक्षणसंयुता। नीलोत्पले ऽंबिका साक्षाद उत्पले षण्मुखः स्वयम।।
bilvapatre sthitā lakṣmīr devī lakṣaṇasaṃyutā| nīlotpale 'ṃbikā sākṣād utpale ṣaṇmukhaḥ svayam||
Sūta said: Goddess Lakṣmī endowed with all characteristics is stationed on the leaf of the Bilva. Ambikā is directly present in the blue lotus and Ṣaṇmukha[5] himself is present in the red lotus.

पद्माश्रितो महादेवः सर्वदेवपतिः शिवः। तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन श्रीपत्त्रं न त्यजेद्बुधः।।
padmāśrito mahādevaḥ sarvadevapatiḥ śivaḥ| tasmātsarvaprayatnena śrīpattraṃ na tyajedbudhaḥ||
Sūta said: Mahādeva, Śiva, the lord of all Devas occupies the lotus. Hence the learned man shall never forsake the Bilva leaf. He must employ every means to secure it.

नीलोत्पलं चोत्पलं च कमलं च विशेषतः। सर्ववश्यकरं पद्मं शिला सर्वार्थसिद्धिदा।।
nīlotpalaṃ cotpalaṃ ca kamalaṃ ca viśeṣataḥ| sarvavaśyakaraṃ padmaṃ śilā sarvārthasiddhidā||
Sūta said: He shall not forsake the blue lotus, the red lilies and particularly the red lotuses. The lotus fascinates everyone. Śilā (red arsenic) bestows Siddhi of all objects.

कृष्णागरुसमुद्भूतं सर्वपापनिकृन्तनम। गुग्गुलुप्रभृतीनां चैव दीपानां च निवेदनम।।
kṛṣṇāgarusamudbhūtaṃ sarvapāpanikṛntanam| gugguluprabhṛtīnāṃ caiva dīpānāṃ ca nivedanam||
