ब्राह्मणप्रमुखा वर्णाः सर्वे शृण्वन्तु मे वचः। ज्येष्ठं प्रति यथा राज्यं न देयं मे कथञ्चन।।
brāhmaṇapramukhā varṇāḥ sarve śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ| jyeṣṭhaṃ prati yathā rājyaṃ na deyaṃ me kathañcana||
Yayāti said: Let the members of all castes beginning with the brahmins listen to my words in regard to this why I have decided that the kingdom should in no way be given to the eldest son Yadu.

मम ज्येष्ठेन यदुना नियोगो नानुपालितः। प्रतिकूलमतिश्चैव न स पुत्रः सतां मतः।।
mama jyeṣṭhena yadunā niyogo nānupālitaḥ| pratikūlamatiścaiva na sa putraḥ satāṃ mataḥ||
Yayāti said: My behest was not carried out by Yadu my eldest son. The son who is mentally opposed to his father is not approved of by good men.

मातापित्रोर्वचनकृत सद्भिः पुत्रः प्रशस्यते। स पुत्रः पुत्रवद यस तु वर्तते मातृपितृषु।।
mātāpitrorvacanakṛt sadbhiḥ putraḥ praśasyate| sa putraḥ putravad yas tu vartate mātṛpitṛṣu||
Yayāti said: The son who acts according to the instructions of his parents is praised by good men. He is the real son who behaves towards his parents in a manner befitting a son.

यदुनाहमवज्ञातस तथा तुर्वसुनापि च। द्रुह्येन चानुना चैव मय्यवज्ञा कृता भृशम।।
yadunāhamavajñātas tathā turvasunāpi ca| druhyena cānunā caiva mayyavajñā kṛtā bhṛśam||
Yayāti said: I have been treated with disrespect by Yadu, Turvasu, Druhyu and Anu.

Yayāti said: My instructions were particularly honoured and carried out by Pūru. He is my youngest son by whom my old age had been taken over,

शुक्रेण मे समादिष्टा देवयान्याः कृते जरा। प्रार्थितेन पुनस्तेन जरा संचारिणी कृता।।
śukreṇa me samādiṣṭā devayānyāḥ kṛte jarā| prārthitena punastena jarā saṃcāriṇī kṛtā||
Yayāti said: Because of Devayāni, Śukra had ordained that I would be attacked by old age. When, he was requested, my old age was made transferable by him.

शुक्रेण च वरो दत्तः काव्येनोशनसा स्वयम। पुत्रो यस्त्वनुवर्तेत स ते राज्यधरस्त्विति।।
śukreṇa ca varo dattaḥ kāvyenośanasā svayam| putro yastvanuvarteta sa te rājyadharastviti||
Yayāti said: This boon was given by Śukra himself—“The son who favours you shall be your heir to the kingdom.” May ye all, O sires, approve of it. Pūru shall then be crowned king.”

bhavanto 'pyanujānantu pūrū rājye 'bhiṣicyate| yaḥ putro guṇasampanno mātāpitrorhitaḥ sadā||

sarvamarhati kalyāṇaṃ kanīyān api sa prabhuḥ| arhaḥ pūruridaṃ rājyaṃ yaḥ suto vākyakṛttava||

अभिषिच्य ततो राज्यं पूरुं स सुतम आत्मनः। दिशि दक्षिणपूर्वस्यां तुर्वसुं पुत्रमादिशत।।
abhiṣicya tato rājyaṃ pūruṃ sa sutam ātmanaḥ| diśi dakṣiṇapūrvasyāṃ turvasuṃ putramādiśat||
Sūta said: After crowning his son Pūru in his own kingdom he directed Turvasu his son to be the southern border chief.

दक्षिणायामथो राजा यदुं ज्येष्ठं न्ययोजयत। प्रतीच्यामुत्तरस्यां तु द्रुह्युं चानुं च तावुभौ।।
dakṣiṇāyāmatho rājā yaduṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ nyayojayat| pratīcyāmuttarasyāṃ tu druhyuṃ cānuṃ ca tāvubhau||
Sūta said: Similarly the king employed the eldest son Yadu in the southern frontier and Druhyu and Anu in the west and in the north respectively.

सप्तद्वीपां ययातिस्तु जित्वा पृथ्वीं ससागराम। व्यभजच्च त्रिधा राज्यं पुत्रेभ्यो नाहुषस्तदा।।
saptadvīpāṃ yayātistu jitvā pṛthvīṃ sasāgarām| vyabhajacca tridhā rājyaṃ putrebhyo nāhuṣastadā||
Sūta said: After conquering the earth including the seven islands and seven oceans, the son of Nahuṣa divided the kingdom into three parts among his sons.

पुत्रसंक्रामितश्रीस्तु हर्षनिर्भरमानसः। प्रीतिमानभवद्राजा भारम आवेश्य बन्धुषु।।
putrasaṃkrāmitaśrīstu harṣanirbharamānasaḥ| prītimānabhavadrājā bhāram āveśya bandhuṣu||
Sūta said: With the royal glory transferred to his sons and with the burden placed on his kins, the king became pleased. His mind was filled with delight.

भृगुतुङ्गे तपस्तप्त्वा तत्रैव च महायशाः। साधयित्वा त्वनशनं सदारः स्वर्गमाप्तवान।।
bhṛgutuṅge tapastaptvā tatraiva ca mahāyaśāḥ| sādhayitvā tvanaśanaṃ sadāraḥ svargamāptavān||
Sūta said: He performed penance on the peak Bhṛgutuṅga.[4] There the renowned king practised fast and attained heaven along with his wives. His line of successors consisted of five holy kings who were honoured even by divine sages. The entire earth is pervaded by these descendants like the rays of the sun. By reading or listening to the holy narrative of Yayāti a man becomes intelligent, rich, long lived, famous and blessed with issues. Liberated from all sins he shall be honoured in the world of Śiva.

tasya vaṃśāstu pañcaite puṇyā devarṣisatkṛtāḥ| yairvyāptā pṛthivī kṛtsnā sūryasyeva marīcibhiḥ||
Sūta said: He performed penance on the peak Bhṛgutuṅga.[4] There the renowned king practised fast and attained heaven along with his wives. His line of successors consisted of five holy kings who were honoured even by divine sages. The entire earth is pervaded by these descendants like the rays of the sun. By reading or listening to the holy narrative of Yayāti a man becomes intelligent, rich, long lived, famous and blessed with issues. Liberated from all sins he shall be honoured in the world of Śiva.

By reading or listening to the holy narrative of Yayāti a man becomes intelligent, rich, long lived, famous and blessed with issues. Liberated from all sins he shall be honoured in the world of Śiva.
