asya dvīpasya madhye tu merur nāma mahāgiriḥ| nānāratnamayaiḥ śṛṅgaiḥ sthitaḥ sthitimatāṃ varaḥ||
Sūta said: In the middle of this Jambu Dvīpa is the great mountain Meru[1]. It is the most excellent among the mountains, having many peaks full of jewels.

चतुरशीतिसाहस्रम उत्सेधेन प्रकीर्तितः। प्रविष्टः षोडशाधस्ताद विस्तृतः षोडशैव तु।।
caturaśītisāhasram utsedhena prakīrtitaḥ| praviṣṭaḥ ṣoḍaśādhastād vistṛtaḥ ṣoḍaśaiva tu||
Sūta said: It is reputed to be eighty-four thousand yojanas in height. It has entered sixteen thousand yojanas beneath the ground and it extends to sixteen thousand yojanas.

शराववत संस्थितत्वाद द्वात्रिंशन्मूर्ध्नि विस्तृतः। विस्तारात त्रिगुणश चास्य परिणाहो ऽनुमण्डलः।।
śarāvavat saṃsthitatvād dvātriṃśanmūrdhni vistṛtaḥ| vistārāt triguṇaś cāsya pariṇāho 'numaṇḍalaḥ||
Sūta said: Since it is stationed like a shallow plate the extent on the top is thirty-two thousand yojanas. Three times its width is its girth at the ridges.

हैमीकृतो महेशस्य शुभाङ्गस्पर्शनेन च। धत्तूरपुष्पसंकाशः सर्वदेवनिकेतनः।।
haimīkṛto maheśasya śubhāṅgasparśanena ca| dhattūrapuṣpasaṃkāśaḥ sarvadevaniketanaḥ||
Sūta said: It is rendered golden due to the auspicious contact with the body of Maheśa. It resembles the flower of the Dhattūra plant (thorn apple). It is the abode of all Devas.

क्रीडाभूमिश च देवानाम अनेकाश्चर्यसंयुतः। लक्षयोजन आयामस तस्यैवं तु महागिरेः।।
krīḍābhūmiś ca devānām anekāścaryasaṃyutaḥ| lakṣayojana āyāmas tasyaivaṃ tu mahāgireḥ||
Sūta said: It is the sporting ground for Devas. It is full of miracles. The total width and extent of this mountain is a hundred thousand yojanas.

ततः षोडशसाहस्रं योजनानि क्षितेरधः। शेषं चोपरि विप्रेन्द्रा धरायास्तस्य शृङ्गिणः।।
tataḥ ṣoḍaśasāhasraṃ yojanāni kṣiteradhaḥ| śeṣaṃ copari viprendrā dharāyāstasya śṛṅgiṇaḥ||
Sūta said: O leading brahmins, beneath the earth its extent is sixteen thousand yojanas. The remaining part of that mountain is above the earth. The extent at the root is thus sixteen thousand yojanas and the extent above, they say, is twice the extent at the root.

pūrvataḥ padmarāgābho dakṣiṇe hemasannibhaḥ| paścime nīlasaṃkāśa uttare vidrumaprabhaḥ||
Sūta said: In the east it has the lustre of the ruby; in the south it resembles gold; in the west it shines like the blue stone and in the north it has the coral lustre.

अमरावती पूर्वभागे नानाप्रासादसंकुला। नानादेवगणैः कीर्णा मणिजालसमावृता।।
amarāvatī pūrvabhāge nānāprāsādasaṃkulā| nānādevagaṇaiḥ kīrṇā maṇijālasamāvṛtā||
Sūta said: In the eastern side of this mountain is Amarāvatī (the city of Indra). It is full of mansions of different kinds. It is thronged by different groups of Devas. It is surrounded by clusters of jewels.

गोपुरैर्विविधाकारैर हेमरत्नविभूषितैः। तोरणैर हेमचित्रैस्तु मणिकॢप्तैः पथि स्थितैः।।
gopurairvividhākārair hemaratnavibhūṣitaiḥ| toraṇair hemacitraistu maṇikḷptaiḥ pathi sthitaiḥ||
Sūta said: It has many ornamental gateways of different shapes bedecked in gold and jewels. The arches at the gateways are rendered wonderful with gold, with jewels set in. Thousands of women throng the roadways. They are clever in conversation and elocution. They are bedecked in all ornaments. They stoop down due to the weight of their heavy breasts and their eyes roll to and fro due to intoxication. The Apsaras (water nymphs) move about all round. There are wonderful lakes, tanks, and rivers, all clustered with full blown lotuses. They have golden lines of steps. Even the sands on their banks are golden. Blue and fragrant golden lotuses abound in them. Thus the whole city shines splendidly. With that city the mountain is considered auspicious.

तेजस्विनी नाम पुरी आग्नेय्यां पावकस्य तु। अमरावतीसमा दिव्या सर्वभोगसमन्विता।।
tejasvinī nāma purī āgneyyāṃ pāvakasya tu| amarāvatīsamā divyā sarvabhogasamanvitā||
Sūta said: In the south-eastern side of the mountain is Tejasvinī the city of the fire god. It is divine and similar to Amaravati. It is endowed with all means of pleasures.
The Mountain Meru - Verse 16

वैवस्वती दक्षिणे तु यमस्य यमिनां वराः। भवनैरावृता दिव्यैर जांबूनदमयैः शुभैः।।
vaivasvatī dakṣiṇe tu yamasya yamināṃ varāḥ| bhavanairāvṛtā divyair jāṃbūnadamayaiḥ śubhaiḥ||
Sūta said: O sages, most excellent among those who have self-control, in the southern, side of the mountain is the city of Yama Vaivasvata. It is full of many divine abodes built in gold and very splendid.
The Mountain Meru - Verse 17

नैरृते कृष्णवर्णा च तथा शुद्धवती शुभा। तादृशी गन्धवन्ती च वायव्यां दिशि शोभना।।
nairṛte kṛṣṇavarṇā ca tathā śuddhavatī śubhā| tādṛśī gandhavantī ca vāyavyāṃ diśi śobhanā||
Sūta said: In the south-west is the splendid dark-coloured city Śuddhavatī.[2] Similarly in the north-west is the splendid city Gandhavatī. The city in the north is Mahodayā and that in the north-east is Yaśovatī. Thus cities in all the quarters always shine.

महोदया चोत्तरे च ऐशान्यां तु यशोवती। पर्वतस्य दिगन्तेषु शोभते दिवि सर्वदा।।
mahodayā cottare ca aiśānyāṃ tu yaśovatī| parvatasya diganteṣu śobhate divi sarvadā||
Sūta said: In the south-west is the splendid dark-coloured city Śuddhavatī.[2] Similarly in the north-west is the splendid city Gandhavatī. The city in the north is Mahodayā and that in the north-east is Yaśovatī. Thus cities in all the quarters always shine.

ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशानां तथान्येषां निकेतनम। सर्वभोगयुतं पुण्यं दीर्घिकाभिर्नगोत्तमम।।
brahmaviṣṇumaheśānāṃ tathānyeṣāṃ niketanam| sarvabhogayutaṃ puṇyaṃ dīrghikābhirnagottamam||
Sūta said: There are the abodes of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa as well as of others on it. Thus the mountain endowed with all means of pleasures and containing many lakes, is the most excellent among the mountains.

सिद्धैर्यक्षैस्तु सम्पूर्णं गन्धर्वैर्मुनिपुङ्गवैः। तथान्यैर्विविधाकारैर भूतसंघैश चतुर्विधैः।।
siddhairyakṣaistu sampūrṇaṃ gandharvairmunipuṅgavaiḥ| tathānyairvividhākārair bhūtasaṃghaiś caturvidhaiḥ||
Sūta said: It is full of Siddhas, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, sages and the four kinds of living beings.
The Mountain Meru - Verse 21

गिरेरुपरि विप्रेन्द्राः शुद्धस्फटिकसन्निभम। सहस्रभौमं विस्तीर्णं विमानं वामतः स्थितम।।
girerupari viprendrāḥ śuddhasphaṭikasannibham| sahasrabhaumaṃ vistīrṇaṃ vimānaṃ vāmataḥ sthitam||
Sūta said: O leading brahmins, on the mountain towards the left, stands a palace of seven storeys that is as clear as pure crystal. It is as extensive as though it has a thousand landing grounds. There stays lord Śiva of great arms, whose eyes are the sun, moon and fire. He is seated in a gemset throne along with the goddess and the six-faced deity Kārttikeya.

तस्मिन्महाभुजः शर्वः सोमसूर्याग्निलोचनः। सिंहासने मणिमये देव्यास्ते षण्मुखेन च।।

Sūta said: O leading brahmins, on the mountain towards the left, stands a palace of seven storeys that is as clear as pure crystal. It is as extensive as though it has a thousand landing grounds. harestadardhaṃ vistīrṇaṃ vimānaṃ tatra so 'pi ca| padmarāgamayaṃ divyaṃ padmajasya ca dakṣiṇe||
Sūta said: The palace of Viṣṇu is also there. It extends to half of that of lord Śiva and he (Viṣṇu) stays there. In the south is the divine palace of the lotus-born deity Brahmā. It is full of rubies. There is the city of Indra which is very large. There is the beautiful city of Yama. There are the cities of Soma, Varuṇa, Nirṛti, Pāvaka (fire-god), Vāyu (wind) and Rudra. In their different respective palaces there are the abodes of all people. In the north-east in the holy centre of the lord, perpetual worship is maintained. The holy Nandī stays there along with his disciples and the leading Siddhas. Sanat is comfortably lodged there along with the Siddhas. The lord of Devas is there along with Sanaka, Sananda and others.

तस्मिन शक्रस्य विपुलं पुरं रम्यं यमस्य च। सोमस्य वरुणस्याथ निरृतेः पावकस्य च।।
tasmin śakrasya vipulaṃ puraṃ ramyaṃ yamasya ca| somasya varuṇasyātha nirṛteḥ pāvakasya ca||
Sūta said: The palace of Viṣṇu is also there. It extends to half of that of lord Śiva and he (Viṣṇu) stays there. In the south is the divine palace of the lotus-born deity Brahmā. It is full of rubies. There is the city of Indra which is very large. There is the beautiful city of Yama. There are the cities of Soma, Varuṇa, Nirṛti, Pāvaka (fire-god), Vāyu (wind) and Rudra. In their different respective palaces there are the abodes of all people. In the north-east in the holy centre of the lord, perpetual worship is maintained. The holy Nandī stays there along with his disciples and the leading Siddhas. Sanat is comfortably lodged there along with the Siddhas. The lord of Devas is there along with Sanaka, Sananda and others.

vāyoścaiva tu rudrasya śarvālayasamantataḥ| teṣāṃ teṣāṃ vimāneṣu divyeṣu vividheṣu ca||
Sūta said: The palace of Viṣṇu is also there. It extends to half of that of lord Śiva and he (Viṣṇu) stays there. In the south is the divine palace of the lotus-born deity Brahmā. सनत्कुमारः सिद्धैस्तु सुखासीनः सुरेश्वरः। सनकश च सनन्दश च सदृशाश च सहस्रशः।।
sanatkumāraḥ siddhaistu sukhāsīnaḥ sureśvaraḥ| sanakaś ca sanandaś ca sadṛśāś ca sahasraśaḥ||

योगभूमिः क्वचित्तस्मिन भोगभूमिः क्वचित्क्वचित। बालसूर्यप्रतीकाशं विमानं तत्र शोभनम।।
yogabhūmiḥ kvacittasmin bhogabhūmiḥ kvacitkvacit| bālasūryapratīkāśaṃ vimānaṃ tatra śobhanam||
Sūta said: Some part of it, is the ground for the practice of yoga. In some places are the grounds for enjoyment of pleasures. There is a splendid palace with seven storeys resembling the rising sun.

शैलादिनः शुभं चास्ति तस्मिन्नास्ते गणेश्वरः। षण्मुखस्य गणेशस्य गणानां तु सहस्रशः।।
śailādinaḥ śubhaṃ cāsti tasminnāste gaṇeśvaraḥ| ṣaṇmukhasya gaṇeśasya gaṇānāṃ tu sahasraśaḥ||
Sūta said: It is the splendid palace of Nandī and the chieftain of the Gaṇas is seated there in the midst of six-faced deity, Gaṇeśa, thousands of Gaṇas, Suyaśā of beautiful eyes, the mothers and Madana. The river Jambū[3] flows round the base of this mountain.

सुयशायाः सुनेत्रायाः मातॄणां मदनस्य च। तस्य जम्बूनदी नाम मूलमावेष्ट्य संस्थिता।।
suyaśāyāḥ sunetrāyāḥ mātṝṇāṃ madanasya ca| tasya jambūnadī nāma mūlamāveṣṭya saṃsthitā||
Sūta said: It is the splendid palace of Nandī and the chieftain of the Gaṇas is seated there in the midst of six-faced deity, Gaṇeśa, thousands of Gaṇas, Suyaśā of beautiful eyes, the mothers and Madana. The river Jambū[3] flows round the base of this mountain.
