bhavānkathamanuprāpto mahādevamumāpatim| śrotumicchāmi tatsarvaṃ vaktumarhasi me prabho||
Sanatkumāra said: How did you attain Mahādeva the lord of Umā? O holy lord, it behoves you to narrate everything. I wish to hear.

प्रजाकामः शिलादो ऽभूत पिता मम महामुने। सो ऽप्यन्धः सुचिरं कलं तपस्तेपे सुदुश्चरम।।
prajākāmaḥ śilādo 'bhūt pitā mama mahāmune| so 'pyandhaḥ suciraṃ kalaṃ tapastepe suduścaram||
Śailādi said: O great sage, my blind father Śilāda was desirous of a progeny. For a long time he performed a penance very difficult to be performed by others.

तपतस्तस्य तपसा संतुष्टो वज्रधृक प्रभुः। शिलादमाह तुष्टो ऽस्मि वरयस्व वरानिति।।
tapatastasya tapasā saṃtuṣṭo vajradhṛk prabhuḥ| śilādamāha tuṣṭo 'smi varayasva varāniti||
Śailādi said: The thunderbolt-wielding lord Indra was pleased with his penance. He said to Śilāda—“I am pleased. Choose your boons”.

ततः प्रणम्य देवेशं सहस्राक्षं सहामरैः। प्रोवाच मुनिशार्दूल कृताञ्जलिपुटो हरिम।।
tataḥ praṇamya deveśaṃ sahasrākṣaṃ sahāmaraiḥ| provāca muniśārdūla kṛtāñjalipuṭo harim||
Śailādi said: O leading sage, he bowed down to the thousand-eyed lord of Devas along with Devas. With palms joined in reverence he spoke to him.

bhagavandevatārighna sahasrākṣa varaprada| ayonijaṃ mṛtyuhīnaṃ putramicchāmi suvrata||
Śilāda said: O lord of good holy rites, O destroyer of the enemies of Devas, O bestower of boons, I wish for a son devoid of death and not born of a womb.

पुत्रं दास्यामि विप्रर्षे योनिजं मृत्युसंयुतम। अन्यथा ते न दास्यामि मृत्युहीना न सन्ति वै।।
putraṃ dāsyāmi viprarṣe yonijaṃ mṛtyusaṃyutam| anyathā te na dāsyāmi mṛtyuhīnā na santi vai||
Indra said: O brahmin sage, I shall give you a son born of womb and liable to die. I will not give you anyone otherwise. There are no persons without death.

न दास्यति सुतं ते ऽत्र मृत्युहीनमयोनिजम। पितामहो ऽपि भगवान किमुतान्ये महामुने।।
na dāsyati sutaṃ te 'tra mṛtyuhīnamayonijam| pitāmaho 'pi bhagavān kimutānye mahāmune||
Indra said: O great sage, even lord Brahmā will not grant you a son without death or not born of a womb. Then what about others?

सो ऽपि देवः स्वयं ब्रह्मा मृत्युहीनो न चेश्वरः। योनिजश च महातेजाश चाण्डजः पद्मसंभवः।।
so 'pi devaḥ svayaṃ brahmā mṛtyuhīno na ceśvaraḥ| yonijaś ca mahātejāś cāṇḍajaḥ padmasaṃbhavaḥ||
Indra said: Even that lord Brahmā is not devoid of death himself. The lord himself is born of a womb. The lotus-born deity of great splendour is born of an egg.

महेश्वराङ्गजश्चैव भवान्यास्तनयः प्रभुः। तस्याप्यायुः समाख्यातं परार्धद्वयसंमितम।।
maheśvarāṅgajaścaiva bhavānyāstanayaḥ prabhuḥ| tasyāpyāyuḥ samākhyātaṃ parārdhadvayasaṃmitam||
Indra said: The lord is born of Maheśvara. He is the son of Umā. His span of life is limited to two Parārdhas.

कोटिकोटिसहस्राणि अहर्भूतानि यानि वै। समतीतानि कल्पानां तावच्छेषापरत्रये।।
koṭikoṭisahasrāṇi aharbhūtāni yāni vai| samatītāni kalpānāṃ tāvaccheṣāparatraye||
Indra said: Thousands and crores of kalpas that constitute his day have passed by. So many yet remain.

तस्मादयोनिजे पुत्रे मृत्युहीने प्रयत्नतः। परित्यजाशां विप्रेन्द्र गृहाणात्मसमं सुतम।।
tasmādayonije putre mṛtyuhīne prayatnataḥ| parityajāśāṃ viprendra gṛhāṇātmasamaṃ sutam||
Indra said: Hence O leading brahmin, eschew your ardent desire for a son devoid of death or not born of a womb. Accept a son like yourself.

tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā pitā me lokaviśrutaḥ| śilāda iti puṇyātmā punaḥ prāha śacīpatim||
Śailādi said: On hearing his words my meritorious father well-known in the world as Śilāda again spoke to the husband of Śacī (i.e. Indra).

भगवन्नण्डयोनित्वं पद्मयोनित्वमेव च। महेश्वराङ्गयोनित्वं श्रुतं वै ब्रह्मणो मया।।
bhagavannaṇḍayonitvaṃ padmayonitvameva ca| maheśvarāṅgayonitvaṃ śrutaṃ vai brahmaṇo mayā||
Śilāda said: O lord, I have already heard that Brahmā was born of an Egg, was born of a lotus and also was born of Maheśvara.

पुरा महेन्द्रदायादाद गदतश्चास्य पूर्वजात। नारदाद्वै महाबाहो कथमत्राशु नो वद।।
purā mahendradāyādād gadataścāsya pūrvajāt| nāradādvai mahābāho kathamatrāśu no vada||
Śilāda said: Formerly O Mahendra, of great arms, Narada my elder brother, had been saying this and I have heard it from him. But tell me, how this can. be? Dākṣāyaṇī was the grand-daughter of Brahmā since Dakṣa was the son of the lotus-born deity? How then can Brahmā be her son?

दाक्षायणी सा दक्षो ऽपि देवः पद्मोद्भवात्मजः। पौत्रीकनकगर्भस्य कथं तस्याः सुतो विभुः।।
dākṣāyaṇī sā dakṣo 'pi devaḥ padmodbhavātmajaḥ| pautrīkanakagarbhasya kathaṃ tasyāḥ suto vibhuḥ||
Śilāda said: Formerly O Mahendra, of great arms, Narada my elder brother, had been saying this and I have heard it from him. But tell me, how this can. be? Dākṣāyaṇī was the grand-daughter of Brahmā since Dakṣa was the son of the lotus-born deity? How then can Brahmā be her son?

स्थाने संशयितुं विप्र तव वक्ष्यामि कारणम। कल्पे तत्पुरुषे वृत्तं ब्रह्मणः परमेष्ठिनः।।
sthāne saṃśayituṃ vipra tava vakṣyāmi kāraṇam| kalpe tatpuruṣe vṛttaṃ brahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ||
Indra said: O brahmin, your doubt is reasonable. I shall tell you the cause of the same that happened to Brahmā in the Tatpuruṣa kalpa. After pondering over all things the supreme lord created Brahmā. In the Meghavāhana kalpa, Viṣṇu, the lord of the universe, became a cloud and bore the supreme lord Śiva for a thousand years with ease and comfort.

ससर्ज सकलं ध्यात्वा ब्रह्माणं परमेश्वरः। जनार्दनो जगन्नाथः कल्पे वै मेघवाहने।।
sasarja sakalaṃ dhyātvā brahmāṇaṃ parameśvaraḥ| janārdano jagannāthaḥ kalpe vai meghavāhane||
Indra said: O brahmin, your doubt is reasonable. I shall tell you the cause of the same that happened to Brahmā in the Tatpuruṣa kalpa. After pondering over all things the supreme lord created Brahmā. In the Meghavāhana kalpa, Viṣṇu, the lord of the universe, became a cloud and bore the supreme lord Śiva for a thousand years with ease and comfort.

divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ tu megho bhūtvāvahaddharam| nārāyaṇo mahādevaṃ bahumānena sādaram||
Indra said: O brahmin, your doubt is reasonable. I shall tell you the cause of the same that happened to Brahmā in the Tatpuruṣa kalpa. दृष्ट्वा भावं महादेवो हरेः स्वात्मनि शङ्करः। प्रददौ तस्य सकलं स्रष्टुं वै ब्रह्मणा सह।।
dṛṣṭvā bhāvaṃ mahādevo hareḥ svātmani śaṅkaraḥ| pradadau tasya sakalaṃ sraṣṭuṃ vai brahmaṇā saha||
Indra said: On seeing the devotional feeling of Viṣṇu towards himself the great lord entrusted to him everything along with Brahmā with instructions to create further.
Grant of boons to Brahmā - Verse 20

तदा तं कल्पमाहुर्वै मेघवाहनसंज्ञया। हिरण्यगर्भस्तं दृष्ट्वा तस्य देहोद्भवस्तदा।।
tadā taṃ kalpamāhurvai meghavāhanasaṃjñayā| hiraṇyagarbhastaṃ dṛṣṭvā tasya dehodbhavastadā||
Indra said: Then they call that kalpa by the name Meghavāhana. On seeing him born of His body Brahmā approached Śiva and said: “O lord, Viṣṇu was born of your left and I am born of your right side.”

जनार्दनसुतः प्राह तपसा प्राप्य शङ्करम। तव वामाङ्गजो विष्णुर दक्षिणाङ्गभवो ह्यहम।।
janārdanasutaḥ prāha tapasā prāpya śaṅkaram| tava vāmāṅgajo viṣṇur dakṣiṇāṅgabhavo hyaham||
Indra said: Then they call that kalpa by the name Meghavāhana. On seeing him born of His body Brahmā approached Śiva and said: “O lord, Viṣṇu was born of your left and I am born of your right side.”

मया सह जगत्सर्वं तथाप्यसृजदच्युतः। जगन्मयो ऽवहद्यस्मान मेघो भूत्वा दिवानिशम।।
mayā saha jagatsarvaṃ tathāpyasṛjadacyutaḥ| jaganmayo 'vahadyasmān megho bhūtvā divāniśam||
Indra said: “Still Viṣṇu created the entire universe along with me. Taking the form of a cloud identical with the world he bore you the lord of Devas, preceptor of the universe, day and night. O lord, I am a better devotee of yours than him. Be pleased with me, O lord, grant me omniscience.”

भवन्तमवहद्विष्णुर देवदेवं जगद्गुरुम। नारायणादपि विभो भक्तो ऽहं तव शङ्कर।।

Indra said: “Still Viṣṇu created the entire universe along with me. Taking the form of a cloud identical with the world he bore you the lord of Devas, preceptor of the universe, day and night. O lord, I am a better devotee of yours than him. Be pleased with me, O lord, grant me omniscience.”

प्रसीद देहि मे सर्वं सर्वात्मत्वं तव प्रभो। तदाथ लब्ध्वा भगवान भवात्सर्वात्मतां क्षणात।।
prasīda dehi me sarvaṃ sarvātmatvaṃ tava prabho| tadātha labdhvā bhagavān bhavātsarvātmatāṃ kṣaṇāt||
Indra said: “Still Viṣṇu created the entire universe along with me. Taking the form of a cloud identical with the world he bore you the lord of Devas, preceptor of the universe, day and night. O lord, I am a better devotee of yours than him. Be pleased with me, O lord, grant me omniscience.”

tvaramāṇo 'tha saṃgamya dadarśa puruṣottamam| ekārṇavālaye śubhre tv andhakāre sudāruṇe||
Indra said: “Still Viṣṇu created the entire universe along with me. Taking the form of a cloud identical with the world he bore you the lord of Devas, preceptor of the universe, day and night. O lord, I am a better devotee of yours than him. Be pleased with me, O lord, grant me omniscience.”

hemaratnacite divye manasā ca vinirmite| duṣprāpye durjanaiḥ puṇyaiḥ sanakādyairagocare||
Indra said: “Still Viṣṇu created the entire universe along with me. Taking the form of a cloud identical with the world he bore you the lord of Devas, preceptor of the universe, day and night. O lord, I am a better devotee of yours than him. Be pleased with me, O lord, grant me omniscience.”

जगदावासहृदयं ददर्श पुरुषं त्वजः। अनन्तभोगशय्यायां शायिनं पङ्कजेक्षणम।।
jagadāvāsahṛdayaṃ dadarśa puruṣaṃ tvajaḥ| anantabhogaśayyāyāṃ śāyinaṃ paṅkajekṣaṇam||
Indra said: Brahmā saw the Puruṣa in whose heart the entire universe rested. He was lying down on the couch constituted by the body of the serpent Śeṣa.[2] He had lotus-like eyes and four arms holding the conch, discus, iron club, and the lotus. He was wearing ornaments and in that form he resembled the orb of the moon. He bore the mark Śrivatsa over his breast. Brahmā beheld him with pleasure evident in his face. His lotus-like feet had turned red due to the contact with the lotus-like soft hands of Lakṣmī. He was Īśāna the greatest Ātman. By tamas he was in the form of Kala. By rajas he was the initiator of creation of the world. By sattva he was the sustainer of all. He was Parameśvara, the soul of all, the noble Ātman, the supreme soul. Brahmā saw him lying down in his yogic slumber in the milky ocean full of nectar. On seeing him he spoke to him thus:

शङ्खचक्रगदापद्मं धारयन्तं चतुर्भुजम। सर्वाभरणसंयुक्तं शशिमण्डलसन्निभम।।
śaṅkhacakragadāpadmaṃ dhārayantaṃ caturbhujam| sarvābharaṇasaṃyuktaṃ śaśimaṇḍalasannibham||
Indra said: Brahmā saw the Puruṣa in whose heart the entire universe rested. He was lying down on the couch constituted by the body of the serpent Śeṣa.[2] He had lotus-like eyes and four arms holding the conch, discus, iron club, and the lotus. He was wearing ornaments and in that form he resembled the orb of the moon. He bore the mark Śrivatsa over his breast. Brahmā beheld him with pleasure evident in his face. śrīvatsalakṣaṇaṃ devaṃ prasannāsyaṃ janārdanam| ramāmṛdukarāmbhoja- sparśaraktapadāmbujam||
Indra said: Brahmā saw the Puruṣa in whose heart the entire universe rested. He was lying down on the couch constituted by the body of the serpent Śeṣa.[2] He had lotus-like eyes and four arms holding the conch, discus, iron club, and the lotus. परमात्मानमीशानं तमसा कालरूपिणम। रजसा सर्वलोकानां सर्गलीलाप्रवर्तकम।।
paramātmānamīśānaṃ tamasā kālarūpiṇam| rajasā sarvalokānāṃ sargalīlāpravartakam||
Indra said: Brahmā saw the Puruṣa in whose heart the entire universe rested. He was lying down on the couch constituted by the body of the serpent Śeṣa.[2] He had lotus-like eyes and four arms holding the conch, discus, iron club, and the lotus. sattvena sarvabhūtānāṃ sthāpakaṃ parameśvaram| sarvātmānaṃ mahātmānaṃ paramātmānamīśvaram||

क्षीरार्णवे ऽमृतमये शायिनं योगनिद्रया। तं दृष्ट्वा प्राह वै ब्रह्मा भगवन्तं जनार्दनम।।
kṣīrārṇave 'mṛtamaye śāyinaṃ yoganidrayā| taṃ dṛṣṭvā prāha vai brahmā bhagavantaṃ janārdanam||
Indra said: Brahmā saw the Puruṣa in whose heart the entire universe rested. He was lying down on the couch constituted by the body of the serpent Śeṣa.[2] He had lotus-like eyes and four arms holding the conch, discus, iron club, and the lotus. He was wearing ornaments and in that form he resembled the orb of the moon. He bore the mark Śrivatsa over his breast. Brahmā beheld him with pleasure evident in his face. ग्रसामि त्वां प्रसादेन यथापूर्वं भवानहम। स्मयमानस्तु भगवान प्रतिबुध्य पितामहम।।
grasāmi tvāṃ prasādena yathāpūrvaṃ bhavānaham| smayamānastu bhagavān pratibudhya pitāmaham||
Indra said: “Just as you had swallowed me before, so also I shall swallow you now by the grace of Śiva. The lord with great arms woke up a little surprised and looking at him smiled slightly. Swallowed by that noble soul, he entered the body of that deity born of the Egg. Then Brahmā created Viṣṇu through the middle of the eye-brows. Created by him Viṣṇu stood near him observing.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे रुद्रः सर्वदेवभवोद्भवः। विकृतं रूपमास्थाय पुरा दत्तवरस्तयोः।।
etasminnantare rudraḥ sarvadevabhavodbhavaḥ| vikṛtaṃ rūpamāsthāya purā dattavarastayoḥ||
Indra said: In the meantime Rudra, the source of origin of all Devas, who had granted boons to both, assumed an uncivil form and came to the place where Viṣṇu stood. Lord Parameśvara, the soul of the universe, wanted to bless both with great favour. Both of them simultaneously saw the lord resembling the fire of Death. They eulogised the terrible lord with matted hair. They bowed to the lord, the bestower of boons, standing far away out of respect. The great lord, the protector of the universe blessed Brahmā and Viṣṇu and vanished there itself.

āgacchadyatra vai viṣṇur viśvātmā parameśvaraḥ| prasādamatulaṃ kartuṃ brahmaṇaś ca hareḥ prabhuḥ||
Indra said: In the meantime Rudra, the source of origin of all Devas, who had granted boons to both, assumed an uncivil form and came to the place where Viṣṇu stood. tau taṃ tuṣṭuvatuścaiva śarvamugraṃ kapardinam| praṇematuś ca varadaṃ bahumānena dūrataḥ||
