ततस्तुतोष भगवान अनुगृह्य महेश्वरः। स्तुतिं श्रुत्वा स्तुतस्तेषाम इदं वचनमब्रवीत।।
tatastutoṣa bhagavān anugṛhya maheśvaraḥ| stutiṃ śrutvā stutasteṣām idaṃ vacanamabravīt||
Nandin said: Thereafter the lord was delighted and he blessed them. On listening to their eulogy he spoke thus:

यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि युष्माभिः कीर्तितं स्तवम। श्रावयेद्वा द्विजान्विप्रो गाणपत्यमवाप्नुयात।।
yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi yuṣmābhiḥ kīrtitaṃ stavam| śrāvayedvā dvijānvipro gāṇapatyamavāpnuyāt||
Nandin said: The brahmin who reads or listens to the hymn glorified by you all or narrates this to the brahmins shall attain leadership among my attendants.

वक्ष्यामि वो हितं पुण्यं भक्तानां मुनिपुङ्गवाः। स्त्रीलिङ्गमखिलं देवी प्रकृतिर्मम देहजा।।
vakṣyāmi vo hitaṃ puṇyaṃ bhaktānāṃ munipuṅgavāḥ| strīliṅgamakhilaṃ devī prakṛtirmama dehajā||
Nandin said: O leading sages, I shall mention what is conducive to your welfare and sacred to the devotees. Everything feminine is goddess Prakṛti born of my body. O brahmins, everything masculine is Puruṣa born of my body. O brahmins, undoubtedly my creation is through both of these.[1]

पुंल्लिङ्गं पुरुषो विप्रा मम देहसमुद्भवः। उभाभ्यामेव वै सृष्टिर मम विप्रा न संशयः।।
puṃlliṅgaṃ puruṣo viprā mama dehasamudbhavaḥ| ubhābhyāmeva vai sṛṣṭir mama viprā na saṃśayaḥ||
Nandin said: O leading sages, I shall mention what is conducive to your welfare and sacred to the devotees. Everything feminine is goddess Prakṛti born of my body. O brahmins, everything masculine is Puruṣa born of my body. O brahmins, undoubtedly my creation is through both of these.[1]

न निन्देद्यतिनं तस्माद दिग्वाससमनुत्तमम। बालोन्मत्तविचेष्टं तु मत्परं ब्रह्मवादिनम।।
na nindedyatinaṃ tasmād digvāsasamanuttamam| bālonmattaviceṣṭaṃ tu matparaṃ brahmavādinam||
Nandin said: Hence no one shall censure the naked ascetic who is devoted to me, who expounds Brahman but who behaves like children and mad people.

ये हि मां भस्मनिरता भस्मना दग्धकिल्बिषाः। यथोक्तकारिणो दान्ता विप्रा ध्यानपरायणाः।।
ye hi māṃ bhasmaniratā bhasmanā dagdhakilbiṣāḥ| yathoktakāriṇo dāntā viprā dhyānaparāyaṇāḥ||
Nandin said: Those devotees of Mahādeva who are interested in applying ashes; who burn their sins through ashes; who are engaged in meditation and carry, out what has been laid down in the scriptures; who have perfect control over the senseorgans; who have sublimated their sexuality; who worship the great lord with perfect verbal, mental and physical control; reach Rudra’s world and do not return therefrom. Hence this secret, sacred and divine rite of the deity of manifest Liṅga.

महादेवपरा नित्यं चरन्तो ह्यूर्ध्वरेतसः। अर्चयन्ति महादेवं वाङ्मनःकायसंयताः।।
mahādevaparā nityaṃ caranto hyūrdhvaretasaḥ| arcayanti mahādevaṃ vāṅmanaḥkāyasaṃyatāḥ||
Nandin said: Those devotees of Mahādeva who are interested in applying ashes; who burn their sins through ashes; who are engaged in meditation and carry, out what has been laid down in the scriptures; who have perfect control over the senseorgans; who have sublimated their sexuality; who worship the great lord with perfect verbal, mental and physical control; reach Rudra’s world and do not return therefrom. रुद्रलोकमनुप्राप्य न निवर्तन्ति ते पुनः। तस्मादेतद्व्रतं दिव्यम अव्यक्तं व्यक्तलिङ्गिनः।।
rudralokamanuprāpya na nivartanti te punaḥ| tasmādetadvrataṃ divyam avyaktaṃ vyaktaliṅginaḥ||
Nandin said: Those devotees of Mahādeva who are interested in applying ashes; who burn their sins through ashes; who are engaged in meditation and carry, out what has been laid down in the scriptures; who have perfect control over the senseorgans; who have sublimated their sexuality; who worship the great lord with perfect verbal, mental and physical control; reach Rudra’s world and do not return therefrom. भस्मव्रताश च मुण्डाश च व्रतिनो विश्वरूपिणः। न तान्परिवदेद्विद्वान न चैतान्नाभिलङ्घयेत।।
bhasmavratāś ca muṇḍāś ca vratino viśvarūpiṇaḥ| na tānparivadedvidvān na caitānnābhilaṅghayet||
Nandin said: The observers of the above holy rite have all types of forms; they shave off their heads and they observe the rite of ashes. No learned man shall revile at them nor should they be transgressed.

न हसेन्नाप्रियं ब्रूयाद अमुत्रेह हितार्थवान। यस्तान्निन्दति मूढात्मा महादेवं स निन्दति।।
na hasennāpriyaṃ brūyād amutreha hitārthavān| yastānnindati mūḍhātmā mahādevaṃ sa nindati||
Nandin said: No one shall laugh derisively at them nor shall he speak words displeasing to them if he desires for welfare here and hereafter. The stupid man who censures them, censures the lord himself.

यस त्वेतान पूजयेन नित्यं स पूजयति शङ्करम। एवमेष महादेवो लोकानां हितकाम्यया।।
yas tvetān pūjayen nityaṃ sa pūjayati śaṅkaram| evameṣa mahādevo lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā||
Nandin said: He who worships them worships Śiva. Thus, with a desire for the welfare of the worlds, the great lord sports about as a great yogin in every yuga, with ashes smeared all over his body.[2]

युगे युगे महायोगी क्रीडते भस्मगुण्ठितः। एवं चरत भद्रं वस ततः सिद्धिमवाप्स्यथ।।
yuge yuge mahāyogī krīḍate bhasmaguṇṭhitaḥ| evaṃ carata bhadraṃ vas tataḥ siddhimavāpsyatha||
Nandin said: He who worships them worships Śiva. Thus, with a desire for the welfare of the worlds, the great lord sports about as a great yogin in every yuga, with ashes smeared all over his body.[2]

अतुलमिह महाभयप्रणाशहेतुं शिवकथितं परमं पदं विदित्वा। व्यपगतभवलोभमोहचित्ताः प्रणिपतिताः सहसा शिरोभिर उग्रम।।
atulamiha mahābhayapraṇāśahetuṃ śivakathitaṃ paramaṃ padaṃ viditvā| vyapagatabhavalobhamohacittāḥ praṇipatitāḥ sahasā śirobhir ugram||
Nandin said: Grasping the great knowledge imparted by Śiva, which being incomparable is the destroyer of fear, the sages bent their heads and made obeisance to Śiva with their minds cleared of fear, greed and delusion immediately.

ततः प्रमुदिता विप्राः श्रुत्वैवं कथितं तदा। गन्धोदकैः सुशुद्धैश च कुशपुष्पविमिश्रितैः।।
tataḥ pramuditā viprāḥ śrutvaivaṃ kathitaṃ tadā| gandhodakaiḥ suśuddhaiś ca kuśapuṣpavimiśritaiḥ||
Nandin said: On hearing what was. recounted thus, the delighted brahmins, began the ablution of lord Śiva with pure scented waters with Kuśa grass and flowers scattered therein. They poured water out of water jars. They sang various songs of esoteric meaning and produced huṃkāras with sweet tones.

स्नापयन्ति महाकुम्भैर अद्भिर एव महेश्वरम। गायन्ति विविधैर्गुह्यैर हुंकारैश्चापि सुस्वरैः।।
snāpayanti mahākumbhair adbhir eva maheśvaram| gāyanti vividhairguhyair huṃkāraiścāpi susvaraiḥ||

नमो देवाधिदेवाय महादेवाय वै नमः। अर्धनारीशरीराय सांख्ययोगप्रवर्तिने।।
namo devādhidevāya mahādevāya vai namaḥ| ardhanārīśarīrāya sāṃkhyayogapravartine||
Nandin said: Obeisance to the overlord of Devas; obeisance to the great lord, obeisance to one who shares half of body with his consort;[3] obeisance to the initiator of Sāṅkhya and Yoga.

मेघवाहनकृष्णाय गजचर्मनिवासिने। कृष्णाजिनोत्तरीयाय व्यालयज्ञोपवीतिने।।
meghavāhanakṛṣṇāya gajacarmanivāsine| kṛṣṇājinottarīyāya vyālayajñopavītine||
Nandin said: Obeisance to one who is black as a cluster of clouds. Obeisance to one wearing elephant’s hide. Obeisance to one having deerskin for the upper garment; obeisance to one having serpent for the sacred thread.

सुरचितसुविचित्रकुण्डलाय सुरचितमाल्यविभूषणाय तुभ्यम। मृगपतिवरचर्मवाससे च प्रथितयशसे नमो ऽस्तु शङ्कराय।।
suracitasuvicitrakuṇḍalāya suracitamālyavibhūṣaṇāya tubhyam| mṛgapativaracarmavāsase ca prathitayaśase namo 'stu śaṅkarāya||
Nandin said: Obeisance to Śiva with wonderful well-arranged ear-rings; with well knit garlands and ornaments; to one with the fine lion skin as garb; obeisance to one of extensive reputation.

ततस तान स मुनीन प्रीतः प्रत्युवाच महेश्वरः। प्रीतो ऽस्मि तपसा युष्मान वरं वृणुत सुव्रताः।।
tatas tān sa munīn prītaḥ pratyuvāca maheśvaraḥ| prīto 'smi tapasā yuṣmān varaṃ vṛṇuta suvratāḥ||
Nandin said: Then the delighted lord spoke to the sages—“O ye of good rites, I am delighted with your penance. Choose your boons.”

ततस्ते मुनयः सर्वे प्रणिपत्य महेश्वरम। भृग्वङ्गिरा वसिष्ठश च विश्वामित्रस्तथैव च।।
tataste munayaḥ sarve praṇipatya maheśvaram| bhṛgvaṅgirā vasiṣṭhaś ca viśvāmitrastathaiva ca||
Nandin said: All those sages bowed to the lord. Then Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, Vasiṣṭha, Viśvāmitra, Gautama, Atri, Sukeśa, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Marīci, Kaśyapa, Kaṇva and Saṃvarta of great penance, spoke to the lord after paying due homage: “We wish to know the mystic secret behind the smearing of ashes, nudity, indirectness (in worship) contrariety in the natural order,[4] the propriety of service or otherwise.” On hearing their words the great lord looked at the excellent sages and said smilingly.

गौतमो ऽत्रिः सुकेशश च पुलस्त्यः पुलहः क्रतुः। मरीचिः कश्यपः कण्वः संवर्तश च महातपाः।।
gautamo 'triḥ sukeśaś ca pulastyaḥ pulahaḥ kratuḥ| marīciḥ kaśyapaḥ kaṇvaḥ saṃvartaś ca mahātapāḥ||
Nandin said: All those sages bowed to the lord. Then Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, Vasiṣṭha, Viśvāmitra, Gautama, Atri, Sukeśa, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Marīci, Kaśyapa, Kaṇva and Saṃvarta of great penance, spoke to the lord after paying due homage: “We wish to know the mystic secret behind the smearing of ashes, nudity, indirectness (in worship) contrariety in the natural order,[4] the propriety of service or otherwise.” On hearing their words the great lord looked at the excellent sages and said smilingly.

te praṇamya mahādevam idaṃ vacanamabruvan| bhasmasnānaṃ ca nagnatvaṃ vāmatvaṃ pratilomatā||
Nandin said: All those sages bowed to the lord. Then Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, Vasiṣṭha, Viśvāmitra, Gautama, Atri, Sukeśa, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Marīci, Kaśyapa, Kaṇva and Saṃvarta of great penance, spoke to the lord after paying due homage: “We wish to know the mystic secret behind the smearing of ashes, nudity, indirectness (in worship) contrariety in the natural order,[4] the propriety of service or otherwise.” On hearing their words the great lord looked at the excellent sages and said smilingly.

sevyāsevyatvamevaṃ ca hy etadicchāma veditum| tatasteṣāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā bhagavānparameśvaraḥ||
Nandin said: All those sages bowed to the lord. Then Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, Vasiṣṭha, Viśvāmitra, Gautama, Atri, Sukeśa, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Marīci, Kaśyapa, Kaṇva and Saṃvarta of great penance, spoke to the lord after paying due homage: “We wish to know the mystic secret behind the smearing of ashes, nudity, indirectness (in worship) contrariety in the natural order,[4] the propriety of service or otherwise.” On hearing their words the great lord looked at the excellent sages and said smilingly.

sasmitaṃ prāha samprekṣya sarvānmunivarāṃstadā||
Nandin said: All those sages bowed to the lord. Then Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, Vasiṣṭha, Viśvāmitra, Gautama, Atri, Sukeśa, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Marīci, Kaśyapa, Kaṇva and Saṃvarta of great penance, spoke to the lord after paying due homage: “We wish to know the mystic secret behind the smearing of ashes, nudity, indirectness (in worship) contrariety in the natural order,[4] the propriety of service or otherwise.” On hearing their words the great lord looked at the excellent sages and said smilingly.
