नमो दिग्वाससे नित्यं कृतान्ताय त्रिशूलिने। विकटाय करालाय करालवदनाय च।।
namo digvāsase nityaṃ kṛtāntāya triśūline| vikaṭāya karālāya karālavadanāya ca||
The sages said: Obeisance to the lord who is naked,[1] who bears the trident, who dissolves the universe,[2] who is handsome,[3] who is an axe to the tree of the universe,[4] to one with terrifying face.[5]

अरूपाय सुरूपाय विश्वरूपाय ते नमः। कटङ्कटाय रुद्राय स्वाहाकाराय वै नमः।।
arūpāya surūpāya viśvarūpāya te namaḥ| kaṭaṅkaṭāya rudrāya svāhākārāya vai namaḥ||
The sages said: Obeisance to formless one; to one of handome form; to one of the form of the universe. Obeisance to one who embraces the elephantine face of his son Gaṇeśa;[6] obeisance to Rudra; obeisance to one in the form of yajamāna?[7]

सर्वप्रणतदेहाय स्वयं च प्रणतात्मने। नित्यं नीलशिखण्डाय श्रीकण्ठाय नमोनमः।।
sarvapraṇatadehāya svayaṃ ca praṇatātmane| nityaṃ nīlaśikhaṇḍāya śrīkaṇṭhāya namonamaḥ||
The sages said: Obeisance to one bowed by all; obeisance to one who bows to his own Ātman; obeisance to one with blue tuft;[8] obeisance to one with poison in his neck.
Hymn to Lord Śiva - Verse 4

नीलकण्ठाय देवाय चिताभस्माङ्गधारिणे। त्वं ब्रह्मा सर्वदेवानां रुद्राणां नीललोहितः।।
nīlakaṇṭhāya devāya citābhasmāṅgadhāriṇe| tvaṃ brahmā sarvadevānāṃ rudrāṇāṃ nīlalohitaḥ||
The sages said: Obeisance to one who is blue-necked, to one who applies the ash from the cremation ground all over the body. You are Brahmā among all Devas. You are Nīlalohita among all Rudras.

आत्मा च सर्वभूतानां सांख्यैः पुरुष उच्यते। पर्वतानां महामेरुर नक्षत्राणां च चन्द्रमाः।।
ātmā ca sarvabhūtānāṃ sāṃkhyaiḥ puruṣa ucyate| parvatānāṃ mahāmerur nakṣatrāṇāṃ ca candramāḥ||
The sages said: You are the soul of all living beings. You are known as Puruṣa in the Sāṅkhya system. You are Meru among mountains; moon among planets; Vasiṣṭha among sages; Indra among Devas; Om among Vedas and the excellent Sāman among Sāman verses.

ऋषीणां च वसिष्ठस त्वं देवानां वासवस तथा। ओङ्कारः सर्ववेदानां श्रेष्ठं साम च सामसु।।
ṛṣīṇāṃ ca vasiṣṭhas tvaṃ devānāṃ vāsavas tathā| oṅkāraḥ sarvavedānāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ sāma ca sāmasu||
The sages said: You are the soul of all living beings. You are known as Puruṣa in the Sāṅkhya system. You are Meru among mountains; moon among planets; Vasiṣṭha among sages; Indra among Devas; Om among Vedas and the excellent Sāman among Sāman verses.

आरण्यानां पशूनां च सिंहस्त्वं परमेश्वरः। ग्राम्याणामृषभश्चासि भगवांल्लोकपूजितः।।
āraṇyānāṃ paśūnāṃ ca siṃhastvaṃ parameśvaraḥ| grāmyāṇāmṛṣabhaścāsi bhagavāṃllokapūjitaḥ||
The sages said: You are lion among beasts; bull among animals and lord of all men.
Hymn to Lord Śiva - Verse 8

सर्वथा वर्तमानो ऽपि यो यो भावो भविष्यति। त्वामेव तत्र पश्यामो ब्रह्मणा कथितं तथा।।
sarvathā vartamāno 'pi yo yo bhāvo bhaviṣyati| tvāmeva tatra paśyāmo brahmaṇā kathitaṃ tathā||
The sages said: In whatever form you are, whatever form you may assume, may we be able to see you there in the manner mentioned by Brahmā.[9]

कामः क्रोधश च लोभश च विषादो मद एव च। एतद इच्छामहे बोद्धुं प्रसीद परमेश्वर।।
kāmaḥ krodhaś ca lobhaś ca viṣādo mada eva ca| etad icchāmahe boddhuṃ prasīda parameśvara||
The sages said: Lust, anger, covetousness, despondency and arrogance—we wish to know all these; be pleased, O supreme lord.
Hymn to Lord Śiva - Verse 10

महासंहरणे प्राप्ते त्वया देव कृतात्मना। करं ललाटे संविध्य वह्निरुत्पादितस्त्वया।।
mahāsaṃharaṇe prāpte tvayā deva kṛtātmanā| karaṃ lalāṭe saṃvidhya vahnirutpāditastvayā||
The sages said: When the time of great Dissolution arrived, O lord, the hand was rubbed against the forehead and fire was generated by you the self-possessed soul.
Hymn to Lord Śiva - Verse 11

तेनाग्निना तदा लोका अर्चिर्भिः सर्वतो वृताः। तस्मादग्निसमा ह्येते बहवो विकृताग्नयः।।
tenāgninā tadā lokā arcirbhiḥ sarvato vṛtāḥ| tasmādagnisamā hyete bahavo vikṛtāgnayaḥ||
The sages said: Then the whole world was enveloped by that fire. Hence these (lust, anger etc.) are distorted fires equal to the fire of dissolution.
Hymn to Lord Śiva - Verse 12

कामः क्रोधश च लोभश च मोहो दम्भ उपद्रवः। यानि चान्यानि भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च।।
kāmaḥ krodhaś ca lobhaś ca moho dambha upadravaḥ| yāni cānyāni bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca||
The sages said: Lust, fury, greediness, delusion, arrogance and harassment and all living beings mobile and immobile are burned by the fire originating from you. O lord of Devas, be our protector even as we are being burned. O highly blessed one, O supreme lord, for the welfare of the world you sprinkle the living beings. O auspicious observer, O lord, command us: we shall carry out your behest, in thousands and crores of living beings, in hundreds and crores of forms, we are unable to reach the extremities. O lord of Devas, obeisance be to you.

दह्यन्ते प्राणिनस्ते तु त्वत्समुत्थेन वह्निना। अस्माकं दह्यमानानां त्राता भव सुरेश्वर।।
dahyante prāṇinaste tu tvatsamutthena vahninā| asmākaṃ dahyamānānāṃ trātā bhava sureśvara||
The sages said: Lust, fury, greediness, delusion, arrogance and harassment and all living beings mobile and immobile are burned by the fire originating from you. O lord of Devas, be our protector even as we are being burned. O highly blessed one, O supreme lord, for the welfare of the world you sprinkle the living beings. O auspicious observer, O lord, command us: we shall carry out your behest, in thousands and crores of living beings, in hundreds and crores of forms, we are unable to reach the extremities. O lord of Devas, obeisance be to you.

त्वं च लोकहितार्थाय भूतानि परिषिञ्चसि। महेश्वर महाभाग प्रभो शुभनिरीक्षक।।
tvaṃ ca lokahitārthāya bhūtāni pariṣiñcasi| maheśvara mahābhāga prabho śubhanirīkṣaka||
The sages said: Lust, fury, greediness, delusion, arrogance and harassment and all living beings mobile and immobile are burned by the fire originating from you. O lord of Devas, be our protector even as we are being burned. O highly blessed one, O supreme lord, for the welfare of the world you sprinkle the living beings. O auspicious observer, O lord, command us: we shall carry out your behest, in thousands and crores of living beings, in hundreds and crores of forms, we are unable to reach the extremities. आज्ञापय वयं नाथ कर्तारो वचनं तव। भूतकोटिसहस्रेषु रूपकोटिशतेषु च।।
ājñāpaya vayaṃ nātha kartāro vacanaṃ tava| bhūtakoṭisahasreṣu rūpakoṭiśateṣu ca||
The sages said: Lust, fury, greediness, delusion, arrogance and harassment and all living beings mobile and immobile are burned by the fire originating from you. O lord of Devas, be our protector even as we are being burned. O highly blessed one, O supreme lord, for the welfare of the world you sprinkle the living beings. O auspicious observer, O lord, command us: we shall carry out your behest, in thousands and crores of living beings, in hundreds and crores of forms, we are unable to reach the extremities. O lord of Devas, obeisance be to you.

अन्तं गन्तुं न शक्ताः स्म देवदेव नमो ऽस्तु ते।।
antaṃ gantuṃ na śaktāḥ sma devadeva namo 'stu te||
The sages said: Lust, fury, greediness, delusion, arrogance and harassment and all living beings mobile and immobile are burned by the fire originating from you. O lord of Devas, be our protector even as we are being burned. O highly blessed one, O supreme lord, for the welfare of the world you sprinkle the living beings. O auspicious observer, O lord, command us: we shall carry out your behest, in thousands and crores of living beings, in hundreds and crores of forms, we are unable to reach the extremities. O lord of Devas, obeisance be to you.
