ekatriṃśattamaḥ kalpaḥ pītavāsā iti smṛtaḥ| brahmā yatra mahābhāgaḥ pītavāsā babhūva ha||
Sūta said: The thirty first kalpa is known as Pītavāsas. Therein, the blessed Brahmā was clad in yellow garbs.

ध्यायतः पुत्रकामस्य ब्रह्मणः परमेष्ठिनः। प्रादुर्भूतो महातेजाः कुमारः पीतवस्त्रधृक।।
dhyāyataḥ putrakāmasya brahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ| prādurbhūto mahātejāḥ kumāraḥ pītavastradhṛk||
Sūta said: Even as Brahmā desirous of a son was meditating, a boy of great splendour, wearing yellow robes, appeared before.

पीतगन्धानुलिप्ताङ्गः पीतमाल्यांबरो युवा। हेमयज्ञोपवीतश च पीतोष्णीषो महाभुजः।।
pītagandhānuliptāṅgaḥ pītamālyāṃbaro yuvā| hemayajñopavītaś ca pītoṣṇīṣo mahābhujaḥ||
Sūta said: He was a youth with the body smeared with yellow scents. He wore yellow garlands and dress. He had long arms, a golden sacred thread and yellow turban.

तं दृष्ट्वा ध्यानसंयुक्तो ब्रह्मा लोकमहेश्वरम। मनसा लोकधातारं प्रपेदे शरणं विभुम।।
taṃ dṛṣṭvā dhyānasaṃyukto brahmā lokamaheśvaram| manasā lokadhātāraṃ prapede śaraṇaṃ vibhum||
Sūta said: On seeing him, Brahmā, endowed with meditation mentally resorted to and sought refuge in the overlord, the creator of the worlds.

tato dhyānagatastatra brahmā māheśvarīṃ varām| gāṃ viśvarūpāṃ dadṛśe maheśvaramukhāccyutām||
Sūta said: Thereafter Brahmā went on meditation. He saw the excellent cow of the great lord. In her universal form it had come out of his mouth.

चतुष्पदां चतुर्वक्त्रां चतुर्हस्तां चतुःस्तनीम। चतुर्नेत्रां चतुःशृङ्गीं चतुर्दंष्ट्रां चतुर्मुखीम।।
catuṣpadāṃ caturvaktrāṃ caturhastāṃ catuḥstanīm| caturnetrāṃ catuḥśṛṅgīṃ caturdaṃṣṭrāṃ caturmukhīm||
Sūta said: It had four feet, four faces, four hands, four udders, four eyes, four horns, four teeth and four mouths.

द्वात्रिंशद्गुणसंयुक्ताम ईश्वरीं सर्वतोमुखीम। स तां दृष्ट्वा महातेजा महादेवीं महेश्वरीम।।
dvātriṃśadguṇasaṃyuktām īśvarīṃ sarvatomukhīm| sa tāṃ dṛṣṭvā mahātejā mahādevīṃ maheśvarīm||
Sūta said: The cow was goddess herself who had faces all round and who possessed thirty-two qualities. On seeing the great goddess in the form of the cow, the great lord who is worshipped by all devas said again repeating the words: ‘O great goddess, symbol of intellect and memory, come on, come on.’ [Thus addressed] she joined her palms in reverence to the lord and stood there. Then the lord of devas spoke to her. [O goddess,] enveloping the universe by your yogic power you should keep it under your control. You will be Umā for the welfare of the brahmins and for the attainment of their goal (of liberation).

पुनराह महादेवः सर्वदेवनमस्कृतः। मतिः स्मृतिर्बुद्धिरिति गायमानः पुनः पुनः।।
punarāha mahādevaḥ sarvadevanamaskṛtaḥ| matiḥ smṛtirbuddhiriti gāyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ||
Sūta said: The cow was goddess herself who had faces all round and who possessed thirty-two qualities. Sūta said: The lord of devas, the preceptor of the universe gave her to Brahmā who was meditating on the lord for obtaining a son.

ततस्तां ध्यानयोगेन विदित्वा परमेश्वरीम। ब्रह्मा लोकगुरोः सो ऽथ प्रतिपेदे महेश्वरीम।।
tatastāṃ dhyānayogena viditvā parameśvarīm| brahmā lokaguroḥ so 'tha pratipede maheśvarīm||
Sūta said: By practising meditation Brahmā realized that she was the great goddess and he accepted her from the preceptor of the worlds.

tatastasya mahādevo divyayogaṃ bahuśrutam| aiśvaryaṃ jñānasaṃpattiṃ vairāgyaṃ ca dadau prabhuḥ||
Sūta said: The lord then granted him a divine yoga, great learning, riches and glory, wealth of knowledge and detachment.

tato 'sya pārśvato divyāḥ prādurbhūtāḥ kumārakāḥ| pītamālyāṃbaradharāḥ pītasraganulepanāḥ||
Sūta said: Thereafter from his sides there emerged divine sons who wore yellow garlands, yellow garbs, yellow necklaces. They had yellow unguents on their bodies and yellow turbans on their heads. Their faces and hair were all yellow. For a period of thousand years, these persons of great power and splendour who were devoid of impurities spent their time for the welfare of brahmins. They were yogic souls delighting in penances. They were endowed with virtue and power of yoga. They instructed the sages engaged in long sacrifices in the system of great yoga and (finally) entered the body of the lord. Thus others too who seek refuge in him in this manner, who have restrained their souls, who have conquered the sense organs and who are engaged in meditation will become sinless. They will have the splendour of Brahman and be free from impurities. They will enter Rudra the great lord and be released from re-birth.
