O Suta, tell us about all Manvantaras,^ both past and future. Mention about Vyasa (the arranger of the Vedas) in the Dvapara Yuga. In the Kali age, how many were the disciples, the expounders of Dharma (Virtue) and Artha, of this intelligent Lord, the god of gods who arranged the branches of the Vedas, (v.l. the incarnations of god Siva, the god of gods, for the establishment of Dharma in the Kali age). How many disciples did the Lord of Devas (i.e. Vyasa) have in the Kali age ? O Suta, it behoves you to recount all these things succinctly. Suta said :

हिमवच्छिखरे रम्ये छगले पर्वतोत्तमे। तस्य शिष्याः शिखायुक्ता वभूवुरमितप्रभाः।।

द्वादशे ऽत्रिः समाख्यातो बली चाथ त्रयोदशे। चतुर्दशे गौतमस्तु वेदशीर्षा ततः परम।।
dvādaśe 'triḥ samākhyāto balī cātha trayodaśe| caturdaśe gautamastu vedaśīrṣā tataḥ param||
In the Svarocisa Manvantara, Devas were Para- vatas and Tusitas. The Suppressor of Asuras i.e. Indra named Vipascit became the ruler of Devas.

vaivasvate 'ntare śaṃbhoravatārāstriśūlinaḥ| aṣṭāviṃśatirākhyātā hyante kaliyuge prabhoḥ| tīrthe kāyāvatāre syād deveśo nakulīśvaraḥ||
In the third Manvantara, the Manu was named Uttama. Susanti, the suppressor of enemies, was the ruler of Devas.

In the Tamasa Manvantara, the classes of gods were Surayasahara*, Satyasand Sudhis. And there were twenty- seven groups [gams) in these divinities.

सुमुखो दुर्मुखश्चैव दुर्दमो दुरतिक्रमः। सनः सनातनश्चैव मुकारश्च सनन्दनः।।
sumukho durmukhaścaiva durdamo duratikramaḥ| sanaḥ sanātanaścaiva mukāraśca sanandanaḥ||
Sibi who had the characteristic feature of having performed a hundred Yajnas, was the Indra. He was a devotee of Sankara and he was engaged in the worship of Mahadeva.^

दालभ्यश्च महायोगी धर्मात्मनो महौजसः। सुधामा विरजाश्चैव शङ्खपात्रज एव च।।
dālabhyaśca mahāyogī dharmātmano mahaujasaḥ| sudhāmā virajāścaiva śaṅkhapātraja eva ca||
In that Manvantara also there were saven sages (saptarfis) viz. Jyotis, Dhaman, Prthak, Kalpa, Caitra, Agnivasana, and Pivara (v.L Jyotis, Dharman, Prthu, Kavya, Caitra, Agni and Varuna).

sārasvatastathā megho ghanavāhaḥ suvāhanaḥ| kapilaścāsuriścaiva voḍhuḥ pañcaśikho muniḥ||
O leading Brahmanas, the Manu of the fifth Man¬ vantara was Raivata by name. Vibhu who was the suppressor of Asuras was Indra there (then).

Purandara, the slayer of heroic enemies, was Indra. The following seven sages make up the group of Saptarfis : Vasistha, Kasyapa, Atri, Jamadagni, Gautama, Visvamitra and Bharadvaja. The incomparable ^akti of Visnu, wherein Sattva is predominant was stationed for the continuous sustenance of the Universe. 27a. All kings and dwellers ofheaven were born of his rays.
