एति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीये उपोद्धातपादे निमिवंशानुकीर्तनं नाम चतुःषष्टितमो ऽध्यायः।। 64।। पिता सोमस्य वै विप्रा जज्ञे ऽत्रिर्भगवानृषिः। तत्रात्रिः सर्वलोकानां तस्थौ स्वेनौजसा वृतः।।
eti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyamabhāge tṛtīye upoddhātapāde nimivaṃśānukīrtanaṃ nāma catuḥṣaṣṭitamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 64|| pitā somasya vai viprā jajñe 'trirbhagavānṛṣiḥ| tatrātriḥ sarvalokānāṃ tasthau svenaujasā vṛtaḥ||
Sūta said:: The lordly sage Atri became the father of the moon, O Brāhmaṇas. He stayed steady surrounded by his own brilliance. He performed only auspicious things, mentally, verbally and physically. He stood steady like wood, a wall or a piece of rock with his arms raised. He possessed excessive refulgence. We have heard that formerly for a period of three thousand years according to the reckoning of gods, he performed a penance that was very difficult to be performed by the worlds.

Sūta said:: The lordly sage Atri became the father of the moon, O Brāhmaṇas. He stayed steady surrounded by his own brilliance. He performed only auspicious things, mentally, verbally and physically. He stood steady like wood, a wall or a piece of rock with his arms raised. He possessed excessive refulgence. We have heard that formerly for a period of three thousand years according to the reckoning of gods, he performed a penance that was very difficult to be performed by the worlds.

तस्योर्द्ध्वरेतसस्तत्र स्थितस्यानिमिषस्य ह। सोमत्वं तनुरापेदे महाबुद्धिः स वै द्विजः।।
tasyorddhvaretasastatra sthitasyānimiṣasya ha| somatvaṃ tanurāpede mahābuddhiḥ sa vai dvijaḥ||
Sūta said:: That Brāhmaṇa was highly intelligent. He had sublimated his sexual urge. He stood without even winking his eyes. His body attained the status of Soma.

ऊर्द्ध्वमाचक्रमे तस्य सोमत्वं भावितात्मनः। नेत्राभ्या मस्रवत्सोमो दशधा द्योतयन दिशः।।
ūrddhvamācakrame tasya somatvaṃ bhāvitātmanaḥ| netrābhyā masravatsomo daśadhā dyotayan diśaḥ||
Sūta said:: The sage of sanctified soul in the state of Soma rose up to the sky.

तं गर्भं विधिना हृष्टा दश देव्यो दधुस्तदा। समेत्य धारयामासुर्न च ताः समशक्नुवन।।
taṃ garbhaṃ vidhinā hṛṣṭā daśa devyo dadhustadā| sametya dhārayāmāsurna ca tāḥ samaśaknuvan||
Sūta said:: Ten delighted divine ladies (i.e. ten quarters) gathered there together and duly bore that foetus in their wombs. But they were unable to hold it.

स ताभ्यः सहसैवाथ दिग्भ्यो गर्भः प्रसाधितः। पपात भासयंल्लोकाञ्छीतांशुः सर्वभावनः।।
sa tābhyaḥ sahasaivātha digbhyo garbhaḥ prasādhitaḥ| papāta bhāsayaṃllokāñchītāṃśuḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ||
Sūta said:: The foetus held up by those ten ladies, the ten quarters, fell down illuminating the worlds. It was the cool-rayed moon, the sanctifier of all.

यदा न धारणे शक्तास्तस्य गर्भस्य ताः स्त्रियः। ततः सहाभिः शीतांशुर्निपपात वसुंधराम।।
yadā na dhāraṇe śaktāstasya garbhasya tāḥ striyaḥ| tataḥ sahābhiḥ śītāṃśurnipapāta vasuṃdharām||
Sūta said:: When the ten ladies were unable to hold that foetus, the moon fell down to the Earth along with them.

पतन्तं सोममालोक्य ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। रथमारोपयामास लोकानां हितकाम्यया।।
patantaṃ somamālokya brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ| rathamāropayāmāsa lokānāṃ hitakāmyayā||
Sūta said:: Seeing him falling down, Brahmā, the grand-father of the worlds, placed him in a chariot, with a desire for the welfare of the worlds.

स हि वेदमयो विप्रा धर्मात्मा सत्यसंगरः। युक्ते वाजिसहस्रेण रथे ऽध्यास्तेति नःश्रुतम।।
sa hi vedamayo viprā dharmātmā satyasaṃgaraḥ| yukte vājisahasreṇa rathe 'dhyāsteti naḥśrutam||
Sūta said:: O Brāhmaṇas, we have heard that he was a righteous-souled one, truthful to his promise and identical with the Vedas. He seated himself in a chariot yoked with a thousand horses.

तस्मिन्निपतिते देवाः पुत्रे ऽत्रेः परमात्मनः। तुष्टुवुर्ब्रह्मणः पुत्रा मानसाः सप्त विश्रुताः।।
tasminnipatite devāḥ putre 'treḥ paramātmanaḥ| tuṣṭuvurbrahmaṇaḥ putrā mānasāḥ sapta viśrutāḥ||
Sūta said:: When that son of Atri of great soul had fallen, the Devas, the seven famous mental sons of Brahmā, the Aṅgirasas and the sons of Bhṛgu, eulogised him by means of many Ṛks, Yajus, Atharvan and Aṅgirasa Mantras.

sa tena rathamukhyena sāgarāntāṃ vasuṃdharām| triḥsaptakṛtvo 'tiyaśāścakārābhipradakṣiṇam||
Sūta said:: By means of that prominent chariot, he circumambulated the ocean-encircled Earth twenty-one times (and became) excessively famous.

तस्य यद्वर्द्धितं तेजः पृथिवीमन्वपद्यत। ओषध्यस्ताः समुद्भूतास्तेजसा खं ज्वलत्युत।।
tasya yadvarddhitaṃ tejaḥ pṛthivīmanvapadyata| oṣadhyastāḥ samudbhūtāstejasā khaṃ jvalatyuta||
Sūta said:: The increased and developed refulgence (of the moon) that reached the Earth, created the medicinal herbs. The firmament is ablaze with that brilliance.

ताभिः पुण्यात्ययं लोकान्प्रजाश्चापि चतुर्विधाः। पोष्टा हि भगवान्सोमो जगतो हि द्विजोत्तमाः।।
tābhiḥ puṇyātyayaṃ lokānprajāścāpi caturvidhāḥ| poṣṭā hi bhagavānsomo jagato hi dvijottamāḥ||
Sūta said:: This moon nourishes the worlds and the four types of living beings. O excellent Brāhmaṇas, lord Soma is indeed the nourisher of the Universe.

स लब्धतेजास्तपसा संस्तवैस्तैः स्वकर्मभिः। तवस्तेपे महाभागः समानां नवतीर्दश।।
sa labdhatejāstapasā saṃstavaistaiḥ svakarmabhiḥ| tavastepe mahābhāgaḥ samānāṃ navatīrdaśa||
Sūta said:: The highly fortunate one performed penance for nine hundred years. By means of penance, by means of his own Karmans and on account of those eulogies he. acquired more brilliance.

इरण्यवर्णा या देव्यो धारयन्त्यात्मना जगत। विभुस्तासां मुदा सोमः प्रख्यातःस्वेन कर्मणा।।
iraṇyavarṇā yā devyo dhārayantyātmanā jagat| vibhustāsāṃ mudā somaḥ prakhyātaḥsvena karmaṇā||
Sūta said:: By means of his own Karman as well as through the joy of those gold-complexioned goddesses who sustain the Universe, lord Soma became famous.

ततस्तस्मै ददौ राज्यं ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मविदां वरः। बीजौषधीनां विप्राणामपां च द्विजसत्तमाः।।
tatastasmai dadau rājyaṃ brahmā brahmavidāṃ varaḥ| bījauṣadhīnāṃ viprāṇāmapāṃ ca dvijasattamāḥ||
Sūta said:: Then, O excellent Brāhmaṇas, god Brahmā, the most excellent one among those who know Brahman, granted him the kingdom of seeds, medicinal herbs, Brāhmaṇas and waters.

सो ऽभिषिक्तो महातेजा महाराज्येन राजराट। लोकान्वै भावयामास तेजस्वी तपतां वरः।।
so 'bhiṣikto mahātejā mahārājyena rājarāṭ| lokānvai bhāvayāmāsa tejasvī tapatāṃ varaḥ||
Sūta said:: On being crowned the exceedingly brilliant king of kings who was endowed with great refulgence and who was the most excellent one among those who blazed, sanctified the worlds through his great kingdom.

सप्तविंशतिरिन्दोस्तु दाक्षायण्यो महाव्रताः। ददौ प्राचेतसो दक्षो नक्षत्राणीति या विदुः।।
saptaviṃśatirindostu dākṣāyaṇyo mahāvratāḥ| dadau prācetaso dakṣo nakṣatrāṇīti yā viduḥ||
Sūta said:: Dakṣa, the son of Pracetas, gave in marriage to the Moon the twenty-seven Dākṣāyaṇīs (daughters of Dakṣa) of great holy rites, whom they know as the stars.

स तत्प्राप्य महाद्राज्यं सोमः सोमवतां प्रभुः। समारेभे राजसूयं सहस्रशतदक्षिणम।।
sa tatprāpya mahādrājyaṃ somaḥ somavatāṃ prabhuḥ| samārebhe rājasūyaṃ sahasraśatadakṣiṇam||
Sūta said:: After getting that big kingdom, Soma the lord of those who possess Soma (juice), began a Rājasūya sacrifice where a hundred thousand gold coins were distributed as monetary gifts.

हिरण्यगर्भश्चोद्गाता ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मत्वमीयिवान। सदस्यस्तत्र भगवान्हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः।।
hiraṇyagarbhaścodgātā brahmā brahmatvamīyivān| sadasyastatra bhagavānharirnārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ||
Sūta said:: Hiraṇyagarbha acted as Udgātṛ (the chanter of Mantras), god Brahmā took up the post of Brahmā (in sacrifice the presiding dignitary). The member of the sacrificial council consisted of lord Hari Nārāyaṇa, surrounded by the ancient Brahminical sages with Sanatkumāra as their leader.

Sūta said:: Hiraṇyagarbha acted as Udgātṛ (the chanter of Mantras), god Brahmā took up the post of Brahmā (in sacrifice the presiding dignitary). The member of the sacrificial council consisted of lord Hari Nārāyaṇa, surrounded by the ancient Brahminical sages with Sanatkumāra as their leader.

दक्षिणामददात्सोमस्त्रींल्लोकानिति नः श्रुतम। तेभ्यो ब्रह्मर्षिमुख्येभ्यः सदस्येभ्यश्च वै द्विजाः।।
dakṣiṇāmadadātsomastrīṃllokāniti naḥ śrutam| tebhyo brahmarṣimukhyebhyaḥ sadasyebhyaśca vai dvijāḥ||
Sūta said:: We have heard, O Brāhmaṇas, that Soma gave three worlds as monetary gifts to Sadasyas (members of the sacrificial assembly) consisting of important Brahmanical sages.

तं सिनी च कुहूश्चैव वपुः पुष्टिः प्रभा वसुः। कीर्त्तिर्धृतिश्च लक्ष्मीश्च नव देव्यः सिषेविरे।।
taṃ sinī ca kuhūścaiva vapuḥ puṣṭiḥ prabhā vasuḥ| kīrttirdhṛtiśca lakṣmīśca nava devyaḥ siṣevire||
Sūta said:: Nine goddesses served him viz. Sinī, Kuhū, Vapsu, Puṣṭi, Prabhā, Vasu, Kīrti, Dhṛti and Lakṣmī.

प्राप्यावभृथमव्यग्रः सर्वदेवर्षिपूजितः। अतिरेजे हि राजेन्द्रो दशधा भासयन्दिशः।।
prāpyāvabhṛthamavyagraḥ sarvadevarṣipūjitaḥ| atireje hi rājendro daśadhā bhāsayandiśaḥ||
Sūta said:: After undergoing the holy valedictory bath called Avabhṛtha, the leading Rājan (i.e. the moon) who was devoid of agitation and who was worshipped by the Devas and sages, excelled in his lustre illuminating the ten quarters.

तस्य तत्प्राप्य दुष्प्रापमैश्वर्यमृषिसंस्तुतम। विबभ्राम मतिर्विप्रा विनयादनयावृता।।
tasya tatprāpya duṣprāpamaiśvaryamṛṣisaṃstutam| vibabhrāma matirviprā vinayādanayāvṛtā||
Sūta said:: When he acquired that luxurious glory which was difficult to get and which was praised by the sages, O Brāhmaṇas, his mind became involved in unrighteousness and hence went astray from the path of moral discipline.

बृहस्पतेः सवै भार्यां तारां नाम यशस्विनीम। जहार सहसा सर्वानवमत्याङ्गिरःसुतान।।
bṛhaspateḥ savai bhāryāṃ tārāṃ nāma yaśasvinīm| jahāra sahasā sarvānavamatyāṅgiraḥsutān||
Sūta said:: He disregarded the sons of Aṅgiras and suddenly abducted the renowned wife of Bṛhaspati named Tārā.

स याच्यमानो देवैश्च तथा देवर्षिभिश्च ह। नैव व्यसर्जयत्तारां तस्मा अङ्गिरसे तदा।।
sa yācyamāno devaiśca tathā devarṣibhiśca ha| naiva vyasarjayattārāṃ tasmā aṅgirase tadā||
Sūta said:: Even after being requested by the Devas and divine sages, he never let-off Tārā to Bṛhaspati, the son of Aṅgiras.

उशनास्तस्य जग्राह पार्ष्णिमङ्गिरसो भवः। स हि शिष्यो महातेजाः पितुः पूर्वं बृहस्पतेः।।
uśanāstasya jagrāha pārṣṇimaṅgiraso bhavaḥ| sa hi śiṣyo mahātejāḥ pituḥ pūrvaṃ bṛhaspateḥ||
Sūta said:: Uśanas took up his (Soma’s) side and Bhava (Śiva) that of Aṅgiras (i.e. Bṛhaspati), for that person of great brilliance was the disciple of the father of Bṛhaspati formerly. It was out of this affection that lord Rudra became the ally of Bṛhaspati and took the bow Ajagava.

तेन स्नेहेन भगवान्रुद्रस्तस्य बृहस्पतेः। पार्ष्मिग्राहो ऽभवद्देवः प्रगृह्याजगवं धनुः।।
tena snehena bhagavānrudrastasya bṛhaspateḥ| pārṣmigrāho 'bhavaddevaḥ pragṛhyājagavaṃ dhanuḥ||
Sūta said:: Uśanas took up his (Soma’s) side and Bhava (Śiva) that of Aṅgiras (i.e. Bṛhaspati), for that person of great brilliance was the disciple of the father of Bṛhaspati formerly. It was out of this affection that lord Rudra became the ally of Bṛhaspati and took the bow Ajagava.

tatra tadyuddhamabhavatprakhyātaṃ tārakāmayam| devānāṃ dānavānāṃ ca lokakṣayakaraṃ mahat||
Sūta said:: There a well-known battle between the Devas and Dānavas took place. It was known as Tārakāmaya (concerning Tārā). It was destructive of the worlds.

तत्र शिष्टास्तु ये देवास्तुषिताश्चैव ते स्मृताः। ब्रह्माणं शरणं जग्मुरादिदेवं पितामहम।।
tatra śiṣṭāstu ye devāstuṣitāścaiva te smṛtāḥ| brahmāṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ jagmurādidevaṃ pitāmaham||
Sūta said:: The Devas who survived this battle are remembered as Tuṣitas. They sought refuge in god Brahmā, the primordial lord, the grandfather of the world.

tato nivāryośanasaṃ rudraṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ ca śaṅkaram| dadāvāṅgirase tārāṃ svayametya pitāmahaḥ||
Sūta said:: Then the grandfather (i.e. Brahmā) himself came there and prevented Uśanas and Rudra, from fighting. He restored Tārā to Aṅgiras (Bṛhaspati).
