इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे सगरचरिते ऽसमञ्जसत्यागो नामैकपञ्चाशत्तमो ऽध्यायः।। 51।। त्यक्त्वा पुत्रं स धर्मात्मा सगरः प्रेम तद्गतम। धर्मशीले तदा वाले चकारांशुमति प्रभुः।।
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyamabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde sagaracarite 'samañjasatyāgo nāmaikapañcāśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 51|| tyaktvā putraṃ sa dharmātmā sagaraḥ prema tadgatam| dharmaśīle tadā vāle cakārāṃśumati prabhuḥ||
Jaimini Said: “After banishing his son, the virtuous-souled Lord Sagara transferred his love for him to the child Aṃśumān whose conduct was righteous.

Jaimini Said: At the very same time, O king, the sons of Sumati grew up collectively. All of them were amiable, devoted and faithful to one another.

Jaimini Said: They had adamantine bodies. They were cruel, merciless and shameless. They were habitually evil in their activities. They had the same nature and characteristics.

एककार्याभिनिरताः क्रोधना मूढचेतसः। अधृष्याः सर्वभूतानां जनोपद्रवकारिणः।।
ekakāryābhiniratāḥ krodhanā mūḍhacetasaḥ| adhṛṣyāḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ janopadravakāriṇaḥ||
Jaimini Said: They co-operated in doing simultaneously the same work. They were deluded in their minds. They were easily irritable. They could not be easily assailed by any living being. They regularly harassed the people.

विनयाचा रसन्मार्गनिरपेक्षाः समन्ततः। बबाधिरे जगत्सर्वमसुरा इव कामतः।।
vinayācā rasanmārganirapekṣāḥ samantataḥ| babādhire jagatsarvamasurā iva kāmataḥ||
Jaimini Said: They had no concern for humility, good conduct or the path of virtue. They harassed the entire world around as they pleased, like Asuras.

विध्वस्तयज्ञसन्मार्गं भुवनं तैरुपद्रुतम। निःस्वाध्याय वषट्कारं बभूवार्तं विशेषतः।।
vidhvastayajñasanmārgaṃ bhuvanaṃ tairupadrutam| niḥsvādhyāya vaṣaṭkāraṃ babhūvārtaṃ viśeṣataḥ||
Jaimini Said: Attacked and tormented by them, the whole world became distressed and unhappy in particular with Yajñas and paths of virtue destroyed. The people could not have their regular self-study of the Vedas nor could they perform holy rites by uttering the Vaṣaṭkāra mantra.

विध्वस्यमाने सुभृशं सागरैर्वरदर्पितैः। प्रक्षोभं परमं जग्मुर्देवासुरमहोरगाः।।
vidhvasyamāne subhṛśaṃ sāgarairvaradarpitaiḥ| prakṣobhaṃ paramaṃ jagmurdevāsuramahoragāḥ||
Jaimini Said: When everything was being completely destroyed by the sons of Sagara who were haughty on account of the boons they had been granted, the Devas, Asuras and the great serpents became extremely agitated.

धरासा सागराक्रान्ता न चलापि तदा चला। तपः समाधिभङ्गश्च प्रबभूव तपस्विनाम।।
dharāsā sāgarākrāntā na calāpi tadā calā| tapaḥ samādhibhaṅgaśca prababhūva tapasvinām||
Jaimini Said: The earth overwhelmed by the ocean began to quake though its name is Acalā (immovable). There was a break and hindrance in the penance and abstract meditation of the ascetics.

हव्यकव्यपरिभ्रष्टास्त्रिदशाः पितृभिः सह। दुःशेन महाताविष्टा विरिञ्जभवनं ययुः।।
havyakavyaparibhraṣṭāstridaśāḥ pitṛbhiḥ saha| duḥśena mahātāviṣṭā viriñjabhavanaṃ yayuḥ||
Jaimini Said: Deprived of the Havya and Kavya offerings, the Devas and the Pitṛs became oppressed by great sorrow. They went to the abode of Brahmā.

तत्र गत्वा यथान्यायं देवाः शर्वपुरोगमाः। शशंसुः सकलं तस्मै सागराणां विचेष्टितम।।
tatra gatvā yathānyāyaṃ devāḥ śarvapurogamāḥ| śaśaṃsuḥ sakalaṃ tasmai sāgarāṇāṃ viceṣṭitam||
Jaimini Said: After going there, the Devas with Śarva (prob. Śakra) at their head, duly reported to him the entire activities of the sons of Sagara.

Jaimini Said: On hearing their words, Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, became engrossed in thought for a short while. The most excellent one among the Suras then said:

devāḥśṛṇuta bhadraṃ vo vāṇīmavahitā mama| vinaṅkṣyantyaciremaiva sāgarā nātra saṃśayaḥ||
Jaimini Said: —“O Devas, listen, attentively to my words. Welfare unto you. There is no doubt that the sons of Sagara will be destroyed ere long.

कालं कञ्चित्प्रतीक्षध्वं तेन सर्वं नियम्यते। निमित्तमात्रमन्यत्तु स एव सकलेशिता।।
kālaṃ kañcitpratīkṣadhvaṃ tena sarvaṃ niyamyate| nimittamātramanyattu sa eva sakaleśitā||
Jaimini Said: Wait for a short time. Everything is being controlled by time. Everything else is but an instrumental. That time alone is the master of all.

tasmādyuṣmaddhitārthāya yadvakṣyāmi surottamāḥ| sarvairbhavadbhiradhunā tatkarttavyamataṃ dritaiḥ||
Jaimini Said: Hence, O excellent Suras, what I am going to say for your welfare should now be carried out by all of you without any slackness.

विष्णोरंशेन भगवान्कपिलो जयतां वरः। जातो जगद्धितार्थाय योगीन्द्रप्रवरो भुवि।।
viṣṇoraṃśena bhagavānkapilo jayatāṃ varaḥ| jāto jagaddhitārthāya yogīndrapravaro bhuvi||
Jaimini Said: The holy lord Kapila, the most excellent among victorious ones, the most exalted among the leading Yogins, is born on the earth with a partial power of Viṣṇu, for the welfare of the universe.

अगस्त्यपीतसलिले दिव्यवर्षशतावधि। ध्यायन्नास्ते ऽधुनांऽभोधावेकान्ते तत्र कुत्र चित।।
agastyapītasalile divyavarṣaśatāvadhi| dhyāyannāste 'dhunāṃ'bhodhāvekānte tatra kutra cit||
Jaimini Said: He is now sitting, meditating in a lonely place somewhere in the ocean, the water of which had been sucked up by Agastya. This meditation has been going on for the last hundred years according to the reckoning of heaven-dwellers.

gatvā yūyaṃ mamādeśātkapilaṃ munipuṅgavam| dhyānāva sānamicchantastiṣṭhadhvaṃ tadupahvare||
Jaimini Said: At my behest, all of you go to the leading sage Kapila. Stand near him wishing for the conclusion of his meditation.

समाधिविरतौ तस्य स्वाभिप्रायमशेषतः। नत्वा तस्मै वदिष्यध्वं स वः श्रेयो विधास्यति।।
samādhiviratau tasya svābhiprāyamaśeṣataḥ| natvā tasmai vadiṣyadhvaṃ sa vaḥ śreyo vidhāsyati||
Jaimini Said: At the close of his abstract meditation, you will bow down to him and tell him your purpose in full. He will do what is conducive to your welfare.

समाधिभङ्गश्च मुनेर्यथा स्यात्सागरैः कृतः। कुरुध्वं च तथा यूयं प्रवृत्तिं विबुधोत्तमाः।।
samādhibhaṅgaśca muneryathā syātsāgaraiḥ kṛtaḥ| kurudhvaṃ ca tathā yūyaṃ pravṛttiṃ vibudhottamāḥ||
Jaimini Said: O excellent Devas, do something whereby a break in the abstract meditation of the sage can be caused through the sons of Sagara”.

prasīda no muniśreṣṭha vayaṃ tvāṃ śaraṇaṃ gatāḥ| upadrutaṃ jagatsarvaṃsāgaraiḥ saṃpraṇaśyati||
The Devas said: “Be pleased with us, O excellent sage. We have sought refuge in you. The whole of the universe, harassed by the sons of Sagara, is perishing.

त्वं किलाखिललोकानां स्थितिसहारकारणः। विष्णोरंशेन योगीन्द्रस्वरूपी भुवि संस्थितः।।
tvaṃ kilākhilalokānāṃ sthitisahārakāraṇaḥ| viṣṇoraṃśena yogīndrasvarūpī bhuvi saṃsthitaḥ||
The Devas said: It is well-known that you are the cause of the sustenance and annihilation of the worlds. With the partial power of Viṣṇu, you have incarnated on the earth and you stay here as the leading Yogin.

पुंसां तापत्रयार्त्तानामार्तिनाशाय केवलम। स्वेच्छया ते धृतो देहो न तु त्वं तपतां वरः।।
puṃsāṃ tāpatrayārttānāmārtināśāya kevalam| svecchayā te dhṛto deho na tu tvaṃ tapatāṃ varaḥ||
The Devas said: A physical body has been voluntarily assumed by you, only for the destruction of the great distress of men afflicted by the three types of agony. Indeed, you are the most excellent among those who perform austerities.

The Devas said: Undoubtedly, O Brāhmaṇa, you are capable, at your will, to mentally, create the entire universe, sustain it and annihilate it.

त्वं नो धाता विधाता च त्वं गुरुस्त्वं परायणम। परित्राता त्वमस्माकं विनिवर्त्तय चापदम।।
tvaṃ no dhātā vidhātā ca tvaṃ gurustvaṃ parāyaṇam| paritrātā tvamasmākaṃ vinivarttaya cāpadam||
The Devas said: You are our creator and dispenser of our destiny. You are our preceptor. You are our greatest resort. You are our protector. Put an end to our adversity.

The Devas said: O leading Brāhmaṇa, be the resort and refuge of the leading Brāhmaṇas in particular, who reside in the three worlds and who are being persecuted by the sons of Sagara.
