इति श्रीब्रह्माण्डे महापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते मध्यमभागे तृतीय उपोद्धातपादे सगरस्यौर्वाश्रमगमनं नाम पञ्चशत्तमो ऽध्यायः।। 50।। कुशलं मम सर्वत्र महर्षे नात्र संशयः। यस्य मे त्वमनुध्याता शमं भार्गवसत्तमः।।
iti śrībrahmāṇḍe mahāpurāṇe vāyuprokte madhyamabhāge tṛtīya upoddhātapāde sagarasyaurvāśramagamanaṃ nāma pañcaśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 50|| kuśalaṃ mama sarvatra maharṣe nātra saṃśayaḥ| yasya me tvamanudhyātā śamaṃ bhārgavasattamaḥ||
Sagara said: O great sage, there is no doubt in this that I am quite well in every respect, since your holiness, the most excellent among the descendants of Bhṛgu, has solicitude for my peace.

यस्तथा शिक्षितः पूर्वमस्त्रे शस्त्रे च सांप्रतम। सो ऽहं कथमशक्तः स्यां सकलारिविनिग्रहे।।
yastathā śikṣitaḥ pūrvamastre śastre ca sāṃpratam| so 'haṃ kathamaśaktaḥ syāṃ sakalārivinigrahe||
Sagara said: How can I, who have been formerly trained in such a manner in wielding missiles and weapons by you, be incapable of restraining all the enemies now?

त्वं मे गुरुः सुहृद्दैवं बन्धुर्मित्रं च केवलम। न ह्यन्यमभिजानामि त्वामृते पितरं च मे।।
tvaṃ me guruḥ suhṛddaivaṃ bandhurmitraṃ ca kevalam| na hyanyamabhijānāmi tvāmṛte pitaraṃ ca me||
Sagara said: You are my preceptor, friend, and well-wisher, deity and kinsman. Nor do I know anyone else as my father except you.

त्वयोपदिष्टेनास्त्रेण सकला भूभृतो मया। विजिता यदनुस्मृत्या शक्तिः सा तपसस्तव।।
tvayopadiṣṭenāstreṇa sakalā bhūbhṛto mayā| vijitā yadanusmṛtyā śaktiḥ sā tapasastava||
Sagara said: All the kings were defeated by me through the missiles, the use of which has been taught by you. It is the power of your penance, remembering which, all of them had been defeated by me.

तपसा त्वं जगत्सर्वं पुनासि परिपासि च। स्रष्टुं संहर्त्तुमपि च शक्नोष्येव न संशयः।।
tapasā tvaṃ jagatsarvaṃ punāsi paripāsi ca| sraṣṭuṃ saṃharttumapi ca śaknoṣyeva na saṃśayaḥ||
Sagara said: By means of your penance, you sanctify and protect the entire universe. Undoubtedly you are capable of creating and annihilating it also.

महाननन्यसामान्यप्रभावस्तपसश्च ते। इह तस्यैकदेशो ऽपि दृश्यते विस्मयप्रदः।।
mahānananyasāmānyaprabhāvastapasaśca te| iha tasyaikadeśo 'pi dṛśyate vismayapradaḥ||
Sagara said: The potentiality of your penance is great. It is not common to anyone else. Here, even a part of it, if seen, causes wonder.

पश्यसिंहासने बाल्यादुपेत्य मृगपोतकः। पिबत्यंभः शनैर्ब्रह्मन्निःशङ्कं ते तपोवने।।
paśyasiṃhāsane bālyādupetya mṛgapotakaḥ| pibatyaṃbhaḥ śanairbrahmanniḥśaṅkaṃ te tapovane||
Sagara said: O holy lord, in your penance-grove, ever since its infancy the fawn, slowly but unhesitatingly approaches the seat of the lion and drinks water.

धयत्यत्रातिविस्रंभात कृशापि हरिणी स्तनम। करोति मृगशृङ्गाग्रे गण्डकण्डूयनं रुरुः।।
dhayatyatrātivisraṃbhāt kṛśāpi hariṇī stanam| karoti mṛgaśṛṅgāgre gaṇḍakaṇḍūyanaṃ ruruḥ||
Sagara said: Here, due to full confidence, even a slim delicate hind offers her udder to her young one. The Ruru deer removes the itching sensation of its cheek at the tip of the horns of the black deer.

नवप्रसूतां हरिणीं हत्वा वृत्त्यै वनान्तरे। व्याघ्री त्वत्तपसावासे सैव पुष्णाति तच्छिशून।।
navaprasūtāṃ hariṇīṃ hatvā vṛttyai vanāntare| vyāghrī tvattapasāvāse saiva puṣṇāti tacchiśūn||
Sagara said: In order to sustain itself, a tigress killed a hind which had recently given birth to its fawn, in another forest. But the same tigress nurtures the young ones of that hind in your penance grove.

गजं द्रुतमनुद्रुत्य सिंहो यस्मादिदं वनम। प्रविष्टो ऽनुसरन्तौ त्वद्भयादेकत्र तिष्ठतः।।
gajaṃ drutamanudrutya siṃho yasmādidaṃ vanam| praviṣṭo 'nusarantau tvadbhayādekatra tiṣṭhataḥ||
Sagara said: It is because of your penance that in the outer jungle a lion was chasing a fleeing elephant. But as soon as they entered this penance grove, they had stopped running. They stand in the same place, afraid of you.

नकुलस्त्वाशुमार्जारमयूरशशपन्नगाः। वृकसूकरशार्दूलशरभर्क्षप्लवङ्गमाः।।
nakulastvāśumārjāramayūraśaśapannagāḥ| vṛkasūkaraśārdūlaśarabharkṣaplavaṅgamāḥ||
Sagara said: The mongoose, rats, cats, peacocks, rabbits, serpents, wolves, boars, tigers, the fabulous eight-footed Śarabh-as, bears, monkeys, jackals, Gavayas (mountain-ox), the cows, the deer and the buffaloes abandon their natural enmity and become friendly.

सृगाला गवयागावो हरिणा महिषास्तथा। वने ऽत्र सहजं वैरं हित्वा मैत्रीमुपागताः।।
sṛgālā gavayāgāvo hariṇā mahiṣāstathā| vane 'tra sahajaṃ vairaṃ hitvā maitrīmupāgatāḥ||
Sagara said: The mongoose, rats, cats, peacocks, rabbits, serpents, wolves, boars, tigers, the fabulous eight-footed Śarabh-as, bears, monkeys, jackals, Gavayas (mountain-ox), the cows, the deer and the buffaloes abandon their natural enmity and become friendly.

एवंविधा तपःशक्तिर्लोकविस्मयदायिनी। न क्वापि दृश्यते ब्रह्मंस्त्वामृते भुवि दुर्लभा।।
evaṃvidhā tapaḥśaktirlokavismayadāyinī| na kvāpi dṛśyate brahmaṃstvāmṛte bhuvi durlabhā||
Sagara said: A power of penance like this, striking the world with surprise, is not seen anywhere. O Brāhmaṇa, excepting in your case, it is difficult to be found elsewhere in the world.

अहं तु त्वत्प्रसादेन विजित्य वसुधामि माम। रिपुभिः सह विप्रर्षे स्वराज्यं समुपागतः।।
ahaṃ tu tvatprasādena vijitya vasudhāmi mām| ripubhiḥ saha viprarṣe svarājyaṃ samupāgataḥ||
Sagara said: Due to your blessings, I have conquered this earth, O Brāhmaṇa sage, and have come back to my own realm along-with my captive enemies.

वश्यामात्यस्त्रिवर्गे ऽपि यथायोग्यकृतादरः। त्वयोपदिष्टमार्गेण सम्यग्राज्यमपालयम।।
vaśyāmātyastrivarge 'pi yathāyogyakṛtādaraḥ| tvayopadiṣṭamārgeṇa samyagrājyamapālayam||
Sagara said: I have all ministers under my control. I have shown sufficient and suitable care and application to the three Vargas (viz. virtue, wealth and love). I have protected the kingdom very well along the path advised by you.

एवं प्रवर्त्तमानस्य मम राज्ये ऽवतिष्ठतः। भवद्दिदृक्षा संजाता सापेक्षा भृगुपुङ्गव।।
evaṃ pravarttamānasya mama rājye 'vatiṣṭhataḥ| bhavaddidṛkṣā saṃjātā sāpekṣā bhṛgupuṅgava||
Sagara said: As I continued my activities thus and stayed on the kingdom, O leading scion of the family of Bhṛgu, there arose in me a desire to see your holiness and that too with a purpose.

किं त्वद्य मयि पर्याप्तमनपत्यतयैव मे। पितृपिण्डप्रदानेन सह संरक्षणं भुवः।।
kiṃ tvadya mayi paryāptamanapatyatayaiva me| pitṛpiṇḍapradānena saha saṃrakṣaṇaṃ bhuvaḥ||
Sagara said: Will the protection of the Earth along with the offerings of balls of rice be restricted to me? (Will it stop with me?) Will it be so due to the fact that I have no issue?

तदिदं दुःशमत्यर्थमनिवार्यं मनोगतम। नानयो ऽपहर्त्तां लोकंऽस्मिन ममेति त्वामुपागतः।।
tadidaṃ duḥśamatyarthamanivāryaṃ manogatam| nānayo 'paharttāṃ lokaṃ'smin mameti tvāmupāgataḥ||
Sagara said: This is the excessive misery in my mind and it cannot be remedied. I have approached you, thinking that, in this world there cannot be anyone else who will be able to remove it.”

इत्युक्तः सगरेणाथ स्थित्वा सो ऽतर्मनाः क्षणम। उवाच भगवानौर्वः सनिदेशमिदं वचः।।
ityuktaḥ sagareṇātha sthitvā so 'tarmanāḥ kṣaṇam| uvāca bhagavānaurvaḥ sanideśamidaṃ vacaḥ||
Sagara said: On being told thus by Sagara, the holy lord Aurva remained silent for a moment thinking within himself, and spoke these words alongwith his directions.

नियम्य सह भार्याभ्यां किञ्चित्कालमिहावस। अवाप्स्यति ततो ऽभीष्टं भवान्नात्र विचारमा।।
niyamya saha bhāryābhyāṃ kiñcitkālamihāvasa| avāpsyati tato 'bhīṣṭaṃ bhavānnātra vicāramā||
Sagara said: “Observing restraints, you stay on here for sometime along with your wives; thereby you will obtain your desire. No doubt need be entertained about this”.

स च तत्रावसत्प्रीतस्तच्छुश्रूषापरायमः। पत्नीभ्यां सह धर्मात्मा भक्तियुक्तश्चिरं तदा।।
sa ca tatrāvasatprītastacchuśrūṣāparāyamaḥ| patnībhyāṃ saha dharmātmā bhaktiyuktaściraṃ tadā||
Sagara said: The righteous-souled king stayed there along with his wives. He was delighted and endowed with devotion. He was eagerly engaged in serving him (Aurva) for a long time.

राजपत्न्यौ च ते तस्य सर्वकालमतन्द्रिते। मुनेरतनुतां प्रीतिं विनयाचारभक्तिभिः।।
rājapatnyau ca te tasya sarvakālamatandrite| muneratanutāṃ prītiṃ vinayācārabhaktibhiḥ||
Sagara said: By means of their humility, good conduct and devotion, the wives of the king accorded great satisfaction to the sage. They were always alert.

भक्त्या शुश्रूषया चैव तयोस्तुष्टो महामुनिः। राजपत्न्यौ समाहूय इदं वचनम ब्रवीत।।
bhaktyā śuśrūṣayā caiva tayostuṣṭo mahāmuniḥ| rājapatnyau samāhūya idaṃ vacanama bravīt||
Sagara said: The great sage was satisfied with their devotion and sincere service. He called the queens and said these words:

भवत्यौ वरमस्मत्तो व्रियतां काममीप्सितम। दास्यामि तं न संदेहो यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुर्ल्लभम।।
bhavatyau varamasmatto vriyatāṃ kāmamīpsitam| dāsyāmi taṃ na saṃdeho yadyapi syātsudurllabham||
Sagara said: “O gentle ladies, let any boon be chosen from us; whatever you desire. I shall grant it even if it is very difficult to get. There is no doubt about it”.

ततः प्रणम्यशिरसा ते ऽप्युभे तं महामुनिम। ऊचतुर्भगवान्पुत्रान्कामयावेति सादरम।।
tataḥ praṇamyaśirasā te 'pyubhe taṃ mahāmunim| ūcaturbhagavānputrānkāmayāveti sādaram||
Sagara said: Then both of them bowed down their heads and respectfully spoke to the great sage—“O holy Lord, we desire sons”.

ततस्ते भगवानाह भवतीभ्यां मया पुनः। राज्ञश्चप्रियकामेन वरो दत्तो ऽयमीप्सितः।।
tataste bhagavānāha bhavatībhyāṃ mayā punaḥ| rājñaścapriyakāmena varo datto 'yamīpsitaḥ||
Sagara said: Then the saint said to them: “Desirous of doing what is pleasing to you both and to the king, this desired boon has been given by me.

पुत्रवत्यौ महाभागे भवत्यौ मत्प्रसादतः। भवेतां ध्रुवमन्यच्च श्रूयतां वचनं मम।।
putravatyau mahābhāge bhavatyau matprasādataḥ| bhavetāṃ dhruvamanyacca śrūyatāṃ vacanaṃ mama||
Sagara said: Due to my blessings, both of you shall be fortunate enough to have sons, certainly. Let these further words of mine also be heard.

पुत्रो भविष्यत्येकस्यामेकः सो ऽनतिधार्मिकः। तथापि तस्य कल्पान्तं संभूतिश्च भविष्यति।।
putro bhaviṣyatyekasyāmekaḥ so 'natidhārmikaḥ| tathāpi tasya kalpāntaṃ saṃbhūtiśca bhaviṣyati||
Sagara said: One of you will bear a single son. He will not be very virtuous. Still he will be alive till the end of Kalpa.

षष्टिः पुत्रसहस्राणामपरस्यां च जायते। अकृतार्थाश्च ते सर्वे विनङ्क्ष्यन्त्यचिरादिव।।
ṣaṣṭiḥ putrasahasrāṇāmaparasyāṃ ca jāyate| akṛtārthāśca te sarve vinaṅkṣyantyacirādiva||
Sagara said: The other will give birth to sixty thousand sons. Ere long, all of them will meet with destruction without fulfilling their assigned work.

एवंविधगुणेपेतो वरौ दत्तौ मया युवाम। अभीप्सितं तु यद्यस्याः स्वेच्छया तत्प्रकीर्त्यताम।।
evaṃvidhaguṇepeto varau dattau mayā yuvām| abhīpsitaṃ tu yadyasyāḥ svecchayā tatprakīrtyatām||
Sagara said: These two boons with such characteristic features have been given to you both. Whatever is desired by either of you, may voluntarily be recounted.”

एवमुक्ते तु मुनिना वैदर्भ्यान्वयवर्द्धनम। वरयामास तनयं पुत्रानन्यास्तथा परा।।
evamukte tu muninā vaidarbhyānvayavarddhanam| varayāmāsa tanayaṃ putrānanyāstathā parā||
Sagara said: When this was spoken by the sage, the daughter of the Vidarbha king chose a son who would perpetuate the line. The other queen chose the other boon of begetting many sons.

इति दत्त्वा वरं राज्ञे सगराय महामुनिः। सभार्यामनुमान्यैनं विससर्ज पुरीं प्रति।।
iti dattvā varaṃ rājñe sagarāya mahāmuniḥ| sabhāryāmanumānyainaṃ visasarja purīṃ prati||
Sagara said: After granting this boon to king Sagara and honouring him along with his wives in a suitable manner, the great sage sent him off towards the city.

मुनिना समनुज्ञातः कृत कृत्यो महीपतिः। रथमारुह्य वेगेन सप्रियः प्रययौ पुरीम।।
muninā samanujñātaḥ kṛta kṛtyo mahīpatiḥ| rathamāruhya vegena sapriyaḥ prayayau purīm||
Sagara said: Permitted by the sage, the ruler of the Earth who was satisfied because his desire had been fulfilled, got into the chariot along with his beloved ones and went to the city quickly.

स प्रविश्य पुरीं रम्यां त्दृष्टपुष्टजनावृताम। आनन्दितः पौरजनै रेमे परमया मुदा।।
sa praviśya purīṃ ramyāṃ tdṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtām| ānanditaḥ paurajanai reme paramayā mudā||
Sagara said: After entering the beautiful city fully inhabited by delighted and well-nourished people, he stayed there with great joy along with the people of the city.

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु राजपत्न्यावुभे नृप। राज्ञे प्रावोचतां गर्भं मुदा परमया युते।।
etasminneva kāle tu rājapatnyāvubhe nṛpa| rājñe prāvocatāṃ garbhaṃ mudā paramayā yute||
Sagara said: At the same time, O king, the two queens intimated to the king with great joy the fact that they had conceived.

ववृधे च तयोर्गर्भः शुक्लपक्षे यथोडुराट। सह संतोषसंपत्त्या पित्रोः पौरजनस्य च।।
vavṛdhe ca tayorgarbhaḥ śuklapakṣe yathoḍurāṭ| saha saṃtoṣasaṃpattyā pitroḥ paurajanasya ca||
Sagara said: The foetus of the queens developed day by day like the moon in the bright half of the lunar month, along with the wealth of pleasure and contentment of the parents and the citizens.

संपूर्णे तु ततः काले मुहूर्ते केशिनीशुभे। असूयताग्निगर्भाभं कुमारममितद्युतिम।।
saṃpūrṇe tu tataḥ kāle muhūrte keśinīśubhe| asūyatāgnigarbhābhaṃ kumāramamitadyutim||
Sagara said: When the time was complete, Keśinī gave birth, in an auspicious hour, to a son of unmeasured lustre and resplendent like the fiery sun-stone.

जातकर्मादिकं तस्य कृत्वा चैव यथाविधि। असमञ्चस इत्येव नाम तस्या करोन्नृपः।।
jātakarmādikaṃ tasya kṛtvā caiva yathāvidhi| asamañcasa ityeva nāma tasyā karonnṛpaḥ||
Sagara said: After the due performance ofjātakarman (post-natal holy rite) etc., the king named him Asamañjasa.
The banishment of Asamañjasa - Verse 39

सुमतिश्चापि तत्काले गर्भालाबमसूयत। संप्रसूतं तु तं त्यक्तं दृष्ट्वा राजाकरोन्मनः।।
sumatiścāpi tatkāle garbhālābamasūyata| saṃprasūtaṃ tu taṃ tyaktaṃ dṛṣṭvā rājākaronmanaḥ||
Sagara said: At that time, Sumati too gave birth to a pot-gourdlike foetus. On seeing it being given birth to, the king wished to throw it away.

तज्ज्ञात्वा भगवानौर्वस्तत्रागच्छद्यदृच्छया। सम्यक संभावितो राज्ञा तमुवाच त्वरान्वितः।।
tajjñātvā bhagavānaurvastatrāgacchadyadṛcchayā| samyak saṃbhāvito rājñā tamuvāca tvarānvitaḥ||
