bhārgavacarite pañcacatvāriṃśattamodhyāyaḥ|| 45|| sagacchanpathi śuśrāva munibhyasta ttvamāditaḥ| rājaputravyavasitaṃ pitrauḥ svargatimeva ca||
Vasiṣṭha said:: While coming along the path, Rāma heard the details (of his father’s murder) from the beginning, from the sages such as the attempt (on his father’s life) by the princes, the passing away of his parents, the murder of his father and the removal of the head of his father by them.

hetubhiḥ śāstranirdiṣṭair vīryasāmarthyasūcakaiḥ| yuktilaukikadṛṣṭāntaistacchokaṃ saṃvyaśāmayat||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Through reasons pointed out in the scriptures, through hints of his heroism and capacity and through cogent arguments and popular examples he alleviated Rāma’s grief.

सांत्वितस्तेन मैधावी धृतिमालंब्य भार्गवः। प्रययौ सहितः सख्या भ्रातॄणां तु दिदृक्षया।।
sāṃtvitastena maidhāvī dhṛtimālaṃbya bhārgavaḥ| prayayau sahitaḥ sakhyā bhrātṝṇāṃ tu didṛkṣayā||
Vasiṣṭha said:: On being consoled, the highly intelligent scion of the family of Bhṛgu, regained his courage. He proceeded ahead, desirous of seeing his brothers. He was accompanied by his friend.

स तान्दृष्ट्वाभिवाद्यैतान्दुःखितान्दुःखकर्शितः। शोकामषयुतस्तैश्च सह त्स्थौ दिनत्रयम।।
sa tāndṛṣṭvābhivādyaitānduḥkhitānduḥkhakarśitaḥ| śokāmaṣayutastaiśca saha tsthau dinatrayam||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Himself, reduced in physical strength due to misery he saw them (his brothers). He bowed down to them who too were equally miserable. Continuously experiencing grief and anger, he stayed with them for three days.

ततो ऽस्य सुमाहान्क्रोधः स्मरतो निधनं पितुः। बभूव सहसा सर्वलोकसंहरणक्षमः।।
tato 'sya sumāhānkrodhaḥ smarato nidhanaṃ pituḥ| babhūva sahasā sarvalokasaṃharaṇakṣamaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: His fierce wrath (due to the recurring) recollection of the death of his father developed soon so much that it became capable of annihilating the worlds.

मातुरर्थे कृतां पूर्वं प्रतिज्ञां सत्यसंगरः। दृढीचकार हृदये सर्वक्षत्रवधोद्यतः।।
māturarthe kṛtāṃ pūrvaṃ pratijñāṃ satyasaṃgaraḥ| dṛḍhīcakāra hṛdaye sarvakṣatravadhodyataḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Being truthful to his vow, he reaffirmed in his heart the pledge taken by him formerly for the sake of his mother. He prepared himself for the massacre of all Kṣatriyas.

क्षत्रवंश्यानशेषेण हत्वा तद्देहलोहितैः। करिष्ये तर्पणं पित्रोरिति निश्चित्य भार्गवः।।
kṣatravaṃśyānaśeṣeṇa hatvā taddehalohitaiḥ| kariṣye tarpaṇaṃ pitroriti niścitya bhārgavaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Bhārgava resolved thus—“After killing all those born of Kṣatriya race, I will perform the libation offerings to my parents with the blood from their bodies”. He indicated his desire to all his brothers. Being permitted by them and having concluded all the obsequies, he started from his house.

akṛtavraṇasaṃyuktaḥ prāpya māhiṣmatīṃ tataḥ| tadbāhyopavane sthitvā sasmāra sa mahodaram||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa, he went to Māhiṣmatī. Standing in a park at the outskirts of that city, he remembered Mahodara.

sa tasmai rathacāpādyaṃ sahasāśvasamanvitam| preṣayāmāsa rāmāya sarvasaṃhananāni ca||
Vasiṣṭha said:: He sent to Rāma a chariot bow etc. and all the necessary requisites for fighting along with Sahasāha.

रामो ऽपि रथमारुह्य सन्नद्धः सशरं धनुः। गृहीत्वापूरयच्छङ्खं रुद्रदत्तममित्रजित।।
rāmo 'pi rathamāruhya sannaddhaḥ saśaraṃ dhanuḥ| gṛhītvāpūrayacchaṅkhaṃ rudradattamamitrajit||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Rāma, the conqueror of enemies, became ready (for the battle) well-accoutred. He got into the chariot. He took up his bow along with the arrows and blew his conch presented by Rudra.

ज्याघोषं च चकारोच्चै रोदसी कंपयन्निव। सहसाहोथ सारथ्यं चक्रे सारथिनां वरः।।
jyāghoṣaṃ ca cakāroccai rodasī kaṃpayanniva| sahasāhotha sārathyaṃ cakre sārathināṃ varaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: He made a twanging sound with the bowstring, making heaven and Earth tremble as it were. Sahasāha, the most excellent one among the charioteers, drove the chariot.

रथज्याशङ्खनादैस्तु वधात्पित्रोरमर्षिणः। तस्याभून्नगरी सर्वा संक्षुब्धाश्च नरद्विपाः।।
rathajyāśaṅkhanādaistu vadhātpitroramarṣiṇaḥ| tasyābhūnnagarī sarvā saṃkṣubdhāśca naradvipāḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: On account of the sounds of the chariot as well as the bow-string of (Rāma) who was furious due to the slaughter of his parents, the entire city, the people and elephants became agitated.

रामं त्वागतमाज्ञाय सर्वक्षत्रकुलान्तकम। संक्षुब्धाश्चक्रुरुद्योगं संग्रामाय नृपात्मजाः।।
rāmaṃ tvāgatamājñāya sarvakṣatrakulāntakam| saṃkṣubdhāścakrurudyogaṃ saṃgrāmāya nṛpātmajāḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: On coining to know that Rāma, the destroyer of all Kṣatriyas, had come, the sons of the king became deeply agitated and they made full preparations for fighting with him.

अथ पञ्चरथाः शुराः शूरसेनादयो नृप। रामेण योद्धुं सहिता राजभिश्च क्रुरुद्यमम।।
atha pañcarathāḥ śurāḥ śūrasenādayo nṛpa| rāmeṇa yoddhuṃ sahitā rājabhiśca krurudyamam||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Then, O king, the heroic princes Śūrasena and others (seated) in five chariots, made their endeavour to fight with Rāma. They were accompanied by other kings as well.

चतुरङ्गवलोपेतास्ततस्ते क्षत्रियर्षभाः। राममासादयामासुः पतङ्गा इव पावकम।।
caturaṅgavalopetāstataste kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ| rāmamāsādayāmāsuḥ pataṅgā iva pāvakam||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Equipped with armies consisting of four different units, those leading Kṣatriyas confronted Rāma like the locusts approching fire.

निवार्य तानापततो रथेनैकेन भार्गवः। युयुधे पार्थिवैः सर्वैः समरे ऽमितविक्रमः।।
nivārya tānāpatato rathenaikena bhārgavaḥ| yuyudhe pārthivaiḥ sarvaiḥ samare 'mitavikramaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: With his single chariot, Bhārgava restrained them as they rushed on. Being a hero of boundless valour, he fought with all the kings in the battle.

ततः पुनरभूद्युद्धं रामस्य सह राजभिः। जघान यत्र संक्रुद्धो राज्ञां शतमुदारधीः।।
tataḥ punarabhūdyuddhaṃ rāmasya saha rājabhiḥ| jaghāna yatra saṃkruddho rājñāṃ śatamudāradhīḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: A battle took place once again between Rāma and the kings, wherein the infuriated sage of high intellect, killed a hundred kings.

ततः स शूरसेनादीन्हत्वा सबलवाहनान। त्रणेन पातयामास क्षितौ क्षत्रियमण्डलम।।
tataḥ sa śūrasenādīnhatvā sabalavāhanān| traṇena pātayāmāsa kṣitau kṣatriyamaṇḍalam||
Vasiṣṭha said:: After killing Śūrasena and others along with their armies and vehicles, he made the entire group of Kṣatriyas fall on the ground in a moment.

ततस्ते भग्नसंकल्पा हतस्वबलवाहनाः। हतशिष्टा नृपतयो दुद्रुवुः सर्वतोदिशम।।
tataste bhagnasaṃkalpā hatasvabalavāhanāḥ| hataśiṣṭā nṛpatayo dudruvuḥ sarvatodiśam||
Vasiṣṭha said:: The kings who survived, whose wishes had been frustrated and whose vehicles and armies had been killed fled in all directions.

एवं विद्राव्य सैन्यानि हत्वा जित्वाथ संयुगे। जघान शतशो राज्ञः शूराञ्छरवराग्निना।।
evaṃ vidrāvya sainyāni hatvā jitvātha saṃyuge| jaghāna śataśo rājñaḥ śūrāñcharavarāgninā||
Vasiṣṭha said:: After routing the armies, killing the enemies and winning the battle, Rāma killed hundreds of kings and heroes by means of the fire from his excellent arrows.

ततः क्रोधपरीतात्मा दग्धुकामो ऽखिलां पुरीम। उदैरयद्भार्गवो ऽस्त्रं कालाग्निसदृशप्रभम।।
tataḥ krodhaparītātmā dagdhukāmo 'khilāṃ purīm| udairayadbhārgavo 'straṃ kālāgnisadṛśaprabham||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Overwhelmed with fury and desirous of burning the entire city, Bhārgava discharged a missile that had a lustre similar to that of Kālāgni (the fire of world-destruction).

ज्वालाकवलिताशेषपुरप्राकारमालिनीम। पुरीं सहस्त्यश्वनरां स ददाहास्त्रपावकः।।
jvālākavalitāśeṣapuraprākāramālinīm| purīṃ sahastyaśvanarāṃ sa dadāhāstrapāvakaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: The fire from that missile burned the city along with elephants, horses and men. The flames enveloped the clusters of the entire rampart-wall of the city.

दह्यमानां पुरीं दृष्ट्वा प्राणत्राणपरायणः। जीवनाय जगामाशु वीतिहोत्रो भयातुरः।।
dahyamānāṃ purīṃ dṛṣṭvā prāṇatrāṇaparāyaṇaḥ| jīvanāya jagāmāśu vītihotro bhayāturaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: On seeing the city being burned and desirous of saving his own life, Prince Vītihotra became frightened and fled quickly for the sake of life.

अस्त्राग्निना पुरीं सर्वां दग्ध्वा हत्वा च शात्रवान। प्राशयानो ऽखिलान लोकान साक्षात्काल इवान्तकः।।
astrāgninā purīṃ sarvāṃ dagdhvā hatvā ca śātravān| prāśayāno 'khilān lokān sākṣātkāla ivāntakaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: After burning the entire city by means of fire from the missile, and after killing the enemies Rāma appeared like the god of Death, the destroyer who devours all the worlds.

अकृतव्रणसंयुक्तः सहसाहेन चान्वितः। जगामरथघोषेण कंपयन्निव मेदिनीम।।
akṛtavraṇasaṃyuktaḥ sahasāhena cānvitaḥ| jagāmarathaghoṣeṇa kaṃpayanniva medinīm||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa and Sahasāha he went ahead making the Earth tremble, as it were, by means of the (rumbling) sound of the chariot.

विनिघ्नन क्षत्रियान्सर्वान संशाम्य पृथिवीतले। महेन्द्राद्रिं ययौ रामस्तपसे धतमानसः।।
vinighnan kṣatriyānsarvān saṃśāmya pṛthivītale| mahendrādriṃ yayau rāmastapase dhatamānasaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: After killing all the Kṣatriyas on the surface of the Earth, Rāma became calm. Then he went to the mountain Mahendra determining in his mind that he should perform penance.

तस्मिन्नष्टचतुष्कं च यावत्क्षत्रसमुद्गमम। प्रत्येत्य भूयस्तद्धत्यै बद्धदीक्षो धृतव्रतः।।
tasminnaṣṭacatuṣkaṃ ca yāvatkṣatrasamudgamam| pratyetya bhūyastaddhatyai baddhadīkṣo dhṛtavrataḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: In the meantime, in thirty-two years (?) Kṣatriyas rose into prominence. Therefore, he returned (from penance) and took the vow of killing them.

क्षत्रक्षेत्रेषु भूयश्च क्षत्रमुत्पादितं द्विजैः। निजघान पुनर्भूमौ राज्ञ शतसहस्रशः।।
kṣatrakṣetreṣu bhūyaśca kṣatramutpāditaṃ dvijaiḥ| nijaghāna punarbhūmau rājña śatasahasraśaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Kṣatriya kings were begotten of the widowed wives of those Kṣatriyas by Brāhmaṇas. Again he (Rāma) killed hundreds and thousands of such kings.

वर्षद्वयेन भूयो ऽपि कृत्वा निःक्षत्रियां महीम। षट्चतुष्टयवर्षान्तं तपस्तेपे पुनश्च सः।।
varṣadvayena bhūyo 'pi kṛtvā niḥkṣatriyāṃ mahīm| ṣaṭcatuṣṭayavarṣāntaṃ tapastepe punaśca saḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: In two years, Rāma made the Earth devoid of Kṣatriyas once again. At the end of it he performed penance of twenty-four years duration once again.

भूयो ऽपि राजन संबुद्धं क्षत्रमुत्पादितं द्विजैः। जघान भूमौ निःशेषं साक्षात्काल इवान्तकः।।
bhūyo 'pi rājan saṃbuddhaṃ kṣatramutpāditaṃ dvijaiḥ| jaghāna bhūmau niḥśeṣaṃ sākṣātkāla ivāntakaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Again, O king, enlightened Kṣatriyas were procreated by the Brāhmaṇas. Rāma killed them entirely like the god of death, the destroyer on the Earth.

कालेन तावता भूयः समुत्पन्नं नृपात्त्वयम। निघ्नंश्चचार पृथिवीं वर्षद्वयमनारतम।।
kālena tāvatā bhūyaḥ samutpannaṃ nṛpāttvayam| nighnaṃścacāra pṛthivīṃ varṣadvayamanāratam||
Vasiṣṭha said:: In the course of so many years some kings were born. Killing them Rāma roamed over the Earth continuously for two years.

अलं रामेण राजेन्द्र स्मरता निधनं पितुः। त्रिः सप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी तेन निःक्षत्रिया कृता।।
alaṃ rāmeṇa rājendra smaratā nidhanaṃ pituḥ| triḥ saptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī tena niḥkṣatriyā kṛtā||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Enough (of this repetition of incidents) O leading king. The Earth was rendered Kṣatriya-less by Rāma who remembered the death of his father. He cleaved the earth of Kṣatriyas for all twenty-one times.

त्रिःसप्तकृत्वस्तन्माता यदुरः स्वमताडयत। तावद्रामेण तस्मात्तु क्षत्रमुत्सादितं भुवि।।
triḥsaptakṛtvastanmātā yaduraḥ svamatāḍayat| tāvadrāmeṇa tasmāttu kṣatramutsāditaṃ bhuvi||
Vasiṣṭha said:: Since his mother beat her own breast twenty-one times, Kṣatriyas on the Earth were exterminated by Rāma as many times.
