upoddhātapāde bhārgavacarite tricatvāriṃśattamo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 43|| rājannevaṃ bhṛgurvidvānpaśyañjanapadānbahūn| samājagāma dharmātmākṛtavraṇasamanvitaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: Thus the scholarly scion, of the family of Bhṛgu, of righteous Soul, proceeded (homeward) accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa, seeing on the way many lands and territories, O king.

nililyuḥ kṣattriyāḥ sarve yatra tatra nirīkṣya tam| vrajantaṃ bhārgavaṃ mārge prāṇarakṣaṇatatparāḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: Seeing Bhārgava on the way, everywhere all the Kṣatriyas hid themselves in their eagerness and anxiety to save their lives.

athāsasāda rājendra rāmaḥ svapiturāśramam| śāntasattvasamākīrṇaṃ vedadhtraninināditam||
Vasiṣṭha said: Then, O leading king, Rāma reached the hermitage of his father, that echoed with the sound of the Vedic Mantras and that was abounding in animals of tranquil nature.

यत्र सिंहा मृगा गावो नागमार्ज्जारमूषकाः। समं च रन्ति संहृष्टा भयं त्यक्त्वा सुदूरतः।।
yatra siṃhā mṛgā gāvo nāgamārjjāramūṣakāḥ| samaṃ ca ranti saṃhṛṣṭā bhayaṃ tyaktvā sudūrataḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: It was a place where the animals (though mutually inimical by nature), like lions, deer, cows, elephants, cats and mice, roamed about in joy simultaneously, leaving off their fear.

yatra dhūmaṃ samīkṣyaiva hyagnihotrasamudbhavam| unnadanti mayūrāśca nṛtyanti ca mahīpane||
Vasiṣṭha said: On seeing the smoke arising from the Agnihotra rites, O ruler of the Earth, the peacocks cry aloud and dance delightedly (as if they have seen a cloud).

यत्र सायन्तने काले सूर्यस्याभिमुखं द्विजैः। जलाञ्जलीन्प्रक्षिपद्भिः क्रियते भूर्चलाविला।।
yatra sāyantane kāle sūryasyābhimukhaṃ dvijaiḥ| jalāñjalīnprakṣipadbhiḥ kriyate bhūrcalāvilā||
Vasiṣṭha said: In the evening hours, the ground there was rendered slushy (?) with water by Brāhmaṇas who used to offer water libations facing the setting Sun.

यत्रान्तेवासिभिर्नित्यं वेदाः शास्त्राणि संहिताः। अभ्यस्यन्ते मुदा युक्तैर्ब्रह्मचर्यव्रते स्थितैः।।
yatrāntevāsibhirnityaṃ vedāḥ śāstrāṇi saṃhitāḥ| abhyasyante mudā yuktairbrahmacaryavrate sthitaiḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: The Vedas, Scriptures and Saṃhitās were joyously recited there, by the resident disciples strictly adhering to the vow of celibacy.

अथ रामः प्रसन्नात्मा पश्यन्नाश्रमसंपदम। प्रविवेश शनै राजन्नकृतव्रणसंयुतः।।
atha rāmaḥ prasannātmā paśyannāśramasaṃpadam| praviveśa śanai rājannakṛtavraṇasaṃyutaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: Surveying the luxurious wealth of the hermitage with great delight in his mind, O king, Rāma entered it accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa.

जयशब्दं नमःशब्दं प्रोच्चरद्भिर्द्विजात्मजैः। द्विजैश्च सत्कृतो रामः परं हर्षमुपागतः।।
jayaśabdaṃ namaḥśabdaṃ proccaradbhirdvijātmajaiḥ| dvijaiśca satkṛto rāmaḥ paraṃ harṣamupāgataḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: On being welcomed and honoured by the Brāhmaṇas and their sons who uttered such words as “Be victorious”, “Obeisance to you”, Rāma became greatly delighted-

āśramābhyantare tatra saṃpraviśya nijaṃ gṛham| dadarśa pitaraṃ rāmo jamadagniṃ taponidhim||
Vasiṣṭha said: Entering the inner precincts of the hermitage, his own house, Rāma saw his father, Jamadagni, the very storehouse of Penance.

साक्षाद्भृगुमिवासीनं निग्रहानुग्रहक्षमम। पपात चरणोपान्ते ह्यष्टाङ्गालिङ्गितावनिः।।
sākṣādbhṛgumivāsīnaṃ nigrahānugrahakṣamam| papāta caraṇopānte hyaṣṭāṅgāliṅgitāvaniḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: The sage was one capable of chastising or blessing. He was seated there like Bhṛgu himself. Rāma prostrated him self at his feet touching the ground with eight parts (of his body).

रामो ऽहं तवा दासो ऽस्मि प्रोच्चरन्निति भूपते। जग्राह चरणौ चापि विधिवत्सज्जनाग्रणीः।।
rāmo 'haṃ tavā dāso 'smi proccaranniti bhūpate| jagrāha caraṇau cāpi vidhivatsajjanāgraṇīḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: “I am Rāma, your slave”—Uttering this, O lord of the Earth, Rāma, the leader of good people, duly touched his feet.

अथ मातुश्च चरणवभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः। उवाच प्रणतो वाक्यं तयोः संहर्षकारणम।।
atha mātuśca caraṇavabhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ| uvāca praṇato vākyaṃ tayoḥ saṃharṣakāraṇam||
Vasiṣṭha said: Then he made obeisance to the feet of his mother. With palms joined in reverence, he made the following statement which made them delighted.

पितस्तव प्रभावेण तपसो ऽतिदुरासदः। कार्त्तवीर्यो हतो युद्धे समुत्रबलवाहनः।।
pitastava prabhāveṇa tapaso 'tidurāsadaḥ| kārttavīryo hato yuddhe samutrabalavāhanaḥ||
Rāma said: Due to the potentiality of your penance, O father, Kārttavīrya who was extremely inassailable (to his enemies) was killed in battle along with his sons, armies and vehicles.

यस्ते ऽपराधं कृतवान्दुष्टमन्त्रिप्रचोदितः। तस्य दण्डो मया दत्तः प्रसह्य मुनिपुङ्गव।।
yaste 'parādhaṃ kṛtavānduṣṭamantripracoditaḥ| tasya daṇḍo mayā dattaḥ prasahya munipuṅgava||
Rāma said: Punishment was sternly meted out by me to (that king) who committed an offence against you, on being urged by his wicked minister, O leading sage.

bhavantaṃ tu namaskṛtya gato 'haṃ brahmaṇoṃ'tikam| taṃ namaskṛtya vidhivatsvakāryaṃ pratyavedayam||
Rāma said: After bowing down to you, I approached Brahmā. After duly bowing down to him I intimated to him my purpose of seeing him.

समामुवाच भगवाञ्छ्रुत्वा वृत्तान्तमादितः। व्रज स्वकार्यसिद्ध्यर्थं शिवलोकं सनातनम।।
samāmuvāca bhagavāñchrutvā vṛttāntamāditaḥ| vraja svakāryasiddhyarthaṃ śivalokaṃ sanātanam||
Rāma said: On hearing the report from the beginning, that lord advised me. “Go to the eternal region of God Śiva for the realization of your object”.

श्रुत्वाहं तद्वयस्तात नमस्कृत्य पिता महम। गतवाञ्छिवलोकं वै हरदर्शनकाङ्क्षया।।
śrutvāhaṃ tadvayastāta namaskṛtya pitā maham| gatavāñchivalokaṃ vai haradarśanakāṅkṣayā||
Rāma said: After hearing his words, O father, I bowed down to Pitāmaha (god Brahmā) and went to Śivaloka with a desire to see Hara.

प्रविश्य तत्र भगवन्नुमया सहितः शिवः। नमस्कृतो मया देवो वाञ्छितार्थ प्रदायकः।।
praviśya tatra bhagavannumayā sahitaḥ śivaḥ| namaskṛto mayā devo vāñchitārtha pradāyakaḥ||
Rāma said: On entering it, O holy Sir, Lord Śiva accompanied by his consort Umā, Śiva who bestows the objects desired by us, was duly saluted by me.

तदग्रे निखिलः स्वीयो वृत्तान्तो विनिवेदितः। मया समाहितधिया स सर्वं श्रुतवानपि।।
tadagre nikhilaḥ svīyo vṛttānto viniveditaḥ| mayā samāhitadhiyā sa sarvaṃ śrutavānapi||
Rāma said: In his presence the whole of my history was reported by me. With great concentration of mind, he heard everything.

श्रुत्वा विचार्य त त्सर्वं ददौ मह्यं कृपान्वितः। त्रैलोक्यविजयं नाम कवचं सर्वसिद्धिदम।।
śrutvā vicārya ta tsarvaṃ dadau mahyaṃ kṛpānvitaḥ| trailokyavijayaṃ nāma kavacaṃ sarvasiddhidam||
Rāma said: Hearing it and pondering over everything, the merciful lord gave me a Kavaca (an esoteric mantra as a coat of mail) named Trailokyavijaya (conqueror of the three worlds). It is the bestower of success in everything.

तल्लब्ध्वा तं नमस्कृत्य पुष्करं समुपागतः। तत्राहं साधयित्वा तु कवचं हृष्टमानसः।।
tallabdhvā taṃ namaskṛtya puṣkaraṃ samupāgataḥ| tatrāhaṃ sādhayitvā tu kavacaṃ hṛṣṭamānasaḥ||
Rāma said: On obtaining it, I bowed down to him and went to Puṣkara. There I practised the Kavaca and became delighted in my mind. After killing Kārttavīrya in the battle, I went to Śivaloka once again. There Skanda and Vināyaka were seen by me at the entrance.

Rāma said: O sage conversant with Dharma, I attempted to enter after bowing down to them.

Rāma said: O sage conversant with Dharma, I attempted to enter after bowing down to them.

Rāma said: Coming to know of it, he (Vināyaka) seized me with his hand and whirled me upwards and downwards. Then I was brought back (to my original place). On seeing him, the axe was hurled by me with great anger. His tusk was felled down when the lord came there. Pārvatī became angry. Then Kṛṣṇa came there accompanied by Rādhā. She (Pārvatī) was appeased by him and she granted me a boon. Kṛṣṇa went away after making me friendly with him (Gaṇeśa).

Rāma said: Coming to know of it, he (Vināyaka) seized me with his hand and whirled me upwards and downwards. Then I was brought back (to my original place). On seeing him, the axe was hurled by me with great anger. His tusk was felled down when the lord came there. Pārvatī became angry. Then Kṛṣṇa came there accompanied by Rādhā. rādhayā sahitastena sānunītā varaṃ dadau| mahyaṃ kṛṣmo jagāmātha tena maitrīṃ vidhāya ca||
Rāma said: Coming to know of it, he (Vināyaka) seized me with his hand and whirled me upwards and downwards. Then I was brought back (to my original place). On seeing him, the axe was hurled by me with great anger. His tusk was felled down when the lord came there. Pārvatī became angry. Then Kṛṣṇa came there accompanied by Rādhā. She (Pārvatī) was appeased by him and she granted me a boon. Kṛṣṇa went away after making me friendly with him (Gaṇeśa).

ततः प्रणम्य देवेशौ पार्वतीपरमेश्वरौ। आगतस्तव सान्निध्यमकृतव्रणसंयुतः।।
tataḥ praṇamya deveśau pārvatīparameśvarau| āgatastava sānnidhyamakṛtavraṇasaṃyutaḥ||
Rāma said: Thereafter, I bowed down to Pārvatī and the Supreme Lord Śiva, the sovereign of the Devas and have now come to your presence accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa”.

इत्यक्त्वा भार्गवो रामो विरराम च भूपते। जमदग्निरुवाचेदं रामं शत्रुनिबर्हणम।।
ityaktvā bhārgavo rāmo virarāma ca bhūpate| jamadagniruvācedaṃ rāmaṃ śatrunibarhaṇam||
Vasiṣṭha said;: After saying this, O lord of the Earth, Rāma, the scion of the family of Bhṛgu, stopped. Jamadagni then said to Rāma, the slayer of enemies.

क्षत्रहत्याभिभूतस्त्वं तावद्दोषोपशान्तये। प्रयश्चित्तं ततस्तावद्यथावत्कर्तुमर्हसि।।
kṣatrahatyābhibhūtastvaṃ tāvaddoṣopaśāntaye| prayaścittaṃ tatastāvadyathāvatkartumarhasi||
Jamadagni said: You have been affected by the sin of slaughtering Kṣatriyas. In order to remove the sin thereof, it behoves you to perform expiation duly”.

इत्युक्तः प्राह पितरं रामो मतिमतां वरः। प्रायश्चित्तं तु तद्योग्यं त्वं मे निर्देष्टुमर्हसि।।
ityuktaḥ prāha pitaraṃ rāmo matimatāṃ varaḥ| prāyaścittaṃ tu tadyogyaṃ tvaṃ me nirdeṣṭumarhasi||
Jamadagni said: On being told thus, Rāma, the most excellent one among intelligent persons, requested his father—“It behoves you to point out to me the proper expiation thereof”.

व्रतैश्च नियमैश्चैव कर्षयन्देहमात्मनः। शाकमूलफलाहारो द्वादशाब्दं तपश्चर।।
vrataiśca niyamaiścaiva karṣayandehamātmanaḥ| śākamūlaphalāhāro dvādaśābdaṃ tapaścara||
Jamadagni said: “Perform a penance for twelve years making your body emaciated by means of holy rites and observances and subsisting only on greens, roots and fruits for your diet”.

इत्युक्तः प्रणिपत्यैनं मातरं च भृगूद्वहः। प्रययौ तपसे राजन्नकृतव्रणसंयुतः।।
ityuktaḥ praṇipatyainaṃ mātaraṃ ca bhṛgūdvahaḥ| prayayau tapase rājannakṛtavraṇasaṃyutaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: On being told thus, the leading member of the family of Bhṛgu, bowed down to him as well as to his mother, O king, and went for performing penance accompanied by Akṛtavraṇa.

स गत्वा पर्वत वरं महेन्द्रमरिकर्षणः। कृत्वाऽश्रमपदं तस्मिंस्तपस्तेपे सुदुश्चरम।।
sa gatvā parvata varaṃ mahendramarikarṣaṇaḥ| kṛtvā'śramapadaṃ tasmiṃstapastepe suduścaram||
Vasiṣṭha said: He, the destroyer of enemies, went to the excellent mountain Mahendra. He built a hermitage there and performed a penance very difficult to be performed by others.

व्रतैस्तपोभिर्नियमैर्देवताराधनैरपि। निन्ये वर्षाणि कति चिद्रामस्तस्मिन्महामनाः।।
vrataistapobhirniyamairdevatārādhanairapi| ninye varṣāṇi kati cidrāmastasminmahāmanāḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: He, the destroyer of enemies, went to the excellent mountain Mahendra. He built a hermitage there and performed a penance very difficult to be performed by others.
