brahmaputra mahābhāga mahānme 'nugrahaḥ kṛtaḥ| yadidaṃ kavacaṃ mahyaṃ prakāśitamanāmayam||
Sagara said: “O highly fortunate son of Brahmā, great is the favour done to me because this Kavaca, devoid of any deficiency, has been revealed to me.

और्वेणानुगृहीतो ऽहं कृतास्त्रो यदनुग्रहात। भवतस्तु कृपापात्रं जातो ऽहमधुना विभो।।
aurveṇānugṛhīto 'haṃ kṛtāstro yadanugrahāt| bhavatastu kṛpāpātraṃ jāto 'hamadhunā vibho||
Sagara said: I have been blessed by Aurva because it was through his favour that I learnt how to discharge missiles. Now, O holy lord, I have become the object of your grace.

rāmeṇa bhārgavendreṇa kārttavīryo nṛpo guro| yathā samāpito vīrastanme vistarato vada||
Sagara said: O preceptor, recount to me in detail how the heroic king Kārttavīrya was slain by Rāma, the leading member of the family of Bhṛgu.

kṛpāpātraṃ sa dattasya rājā rāmaḥ śivasya ca| ubhau tau samare vīrau jaghaṭāte kathaṃ guro||
Sagara said: That king enjoyed the favour of Datta and Rāma that of Śiva. How did these two heroes come together in the battle, O preceptor?

Vasiṣṭha said: “Listen O king, I shall recount to you the story of king Kārttavīrya and the noble-souled Rāma—the story that dispells sins.

स रामः कवचं लब्ध्वा मन्त्रं चैव गुरोर्मुखात। चकार माधनं तस्य भक्त्या परमया युतः।।
sa rāmaḥ kavacaṃ labdhvā mantraṃ caiva gurormukhāt| cakāra mādhanaṃ tasya bhaktyā paramayā yutaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: After receiving the Kavaca and the Mantra directly from the preceptor, Rāma began to practise the same with great devotion.

bhūmiśāgī triṣavaṇa snānasadhyāparāyaṇaḥ| uvāsapuṣkare rāma śatavarṣamatandritaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: Rāma stayed at Puṣkara for a hundred years regularly sleeping down on the bare ground, devoted to the performance of the Sandhyā prayers and bath three times a day, and never remaining languid.

समित्पुष्पकुशादीनि द्रव्याण्यहरहर्भृगोः। आनीय काननाद्भूप प्रायच्छदकृतव्रणः।।
samitpuṣpakuśādīni dravyāṇyaharaharbhṛgoḥ| ānīya kānanādbhūpa prāyacchadakṛtavraṇaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: Everyday, O king, Akṛtavraṇa, brought materials of worship such as sacrificial twigs, flowers, Kuśa grass etc. from the forest and gave them to Rāma, the member of the family of Bhṛgu.

सततं ध्यानसंयुक्तो रामो मतिमतां वरः। आराधयामास विभुं कृष्णं कल्मषनाशनम।।
satataṃ dhyānasaṃyukto rāmo matimatāṃ varaḥ| ārādhayāmāsa vibhuṃ kṛṣṇaṃ kalmaṣanāśanam||
Vasiṣṭha said: Rāma, the most excellent one among intelligent persons, was continuously absorbed in meditation. He thus propitiated lord Kṛṣṇa the destroyer of sins.

Vasiṣṭha said: As he continued his worship and his perpetual meditation, O king, a hundred years elapsed.

ekadā tu mahārāja rāmaḥ snātuṃ gato mahān| madhyamaṃ puṣkaraṃ tatra dadarśāśvaryamuttamam||
Vasiṣṭha said: Once, O great king, Rāma the great sage went to the middle Puṣkara for taking bath. There he saw an excellent miracle.

मृग एकः समायातो मृग्य युक्तः पलायितः। व्याधस्य मृगयां प्राप्तो धर्मतप्तो ऽतिपीडितः।।
mṛga ekaḥ samāyāto mṛgya yuktaḥ palāyitaḥ| vyādhasya mṛgayāṃ prāpto dharmatapto 'tipīḍitaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: A stag came there running accompanied by a hind. He was being chased by a hunter. He was extremely afflicted and distressed by the heat.

पिपासितो महाभाग जलपानसमुत्सुकः। रामस्य पश्यतस्तत्र सरसस्तटमागतः।।
pipāsito mahābhāga jalapānasamutsukaḥ| rāmasya paśyatastatra sarasastaṭamāgataḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: He was thirsty, O highly fortunate one, and was eager to drink water. Even as Rāma was watching, he came to the bank of the lake.

पश्चान्मृगी समायाता भीता सा चकितेक्षणा। उभो तौ पिबतस्तत्र जलं शङ्कितमानसौ।।
paścānmṛgī samāyātā bhītā sā cakitekṣaṇā| ubho tau pibatastatra jalaṃ śaṅkitamānasau||
Vasiṣṭha said: The hind came afterwards. She was frightened and her eyes were tremulous due to fright. Both of them drank water with auspicious minds.

तावत्समागतो व्याधो बाणपाणिर्धनुर्द्धरः। स दृष्ट्वा तत्र संविष्टं रामं भार्गवनन्दनम।।
tāvatsamāgato vyādho bāṇapāṇirdhanurddharaḥ| sa dṛṣṭvā tatra saṃviṣṭaṃ rāmaṃ bhārgavanandanam||
Vasiṣṭha said: By that time, the hunter also came there holding up the bow and having an arrow in his hand. On seeing Rāma, the delighter of the members of Bhṛgu’s family remaining there along with Akṛtavraṇa, he stood there with his eyes fixed far off. Afraid of the scion of the family of Bhṛgu, he then thought thus.

Vasiṣṭha said: By that time, the hunter also came there holding up the bow and having an arrow in his hand. On seeing Rāma, the delighter of the members of Bhṛgu’s family remaining there along with Akṛtavraṇa, he stood there with his eyes fixed far off. ayaṃ rāmo mahāvīro duṣṭānāmantakārakaḥ| kathametasya hanmyetau paśyato mṛgayāmṛgau||
Vasiṣṭha said: “This Rāma is a great warrior. He is capable of destroying wicked persons. How can I kill the stag and the hind hunted by me, when he is within sight.”

iti cintā samāviṣṭo vyādho rājanyasattama| tasthau tatraiva rāmasya bhayātsaṃtrastamānasaḥ||
Vasiṣṭha said: Occupied with this thought, O excellent king, he remained there itself frightened in his mind on account of Rāma.

rāmastu tau mṛgoṃ dṛṣṭvā pibantau sabhyaṃ jalam| tarkayāmāsa medhāvī kimatra bhayakāraṇam||
Vasiṣṭha said: On seeing the pair of deer drinking water as though terribly frightened, the intelligent Rāma began to conjecture. “What is the cause of fear here? There is no roar of a tiger here, nor is the hunter in sight. What is the reason whereby these two are anxious and afraid and have tremulous eyes due to fright.

evaṃ saṃcintya matimānsa tasthau madhyapuṣkare| śiṣyeṇa saṃyuto rāmo yāvattau cāpi saṃsthitau||
Vasiṣṭha said: On thinking thus, Rāma the intelligent sage stood in the middle Puṣkara lake accompanied by his disciple, while they too continued to stand there.

pītvā jalaṃ tatastau tu vṛkṣacchāyāsamāśritau| rāmaṃ dṛṣṭvā mahātmānaṃ kathāṃ tau cakraturmudā||
Vasiṣṭha said: After drinking water they resorted to the shade of a tree. Even as they continued to look at the noble-souled Rāma, they carried on their joyous dialogue.

कान्त चात्रैव तिष्ठावो यावद्रामो ऽत्रसंस्थितः। अस्य वीरस्य सांनिध्ये भयं नैवावयोर्भवेत।।
kānta cātraiva tiṣṭhāvo yāvadrāmo 'trasaṃsthitaḥ| asya vīrasya sāṃnidhye bhayaṃ naivāvayorbhavet||
The hind said: “Darling, we shall continue to stay here as long as Rāma stays here. In the presence of this heroic warrior, we need not have any fear.

अत्राप्यागत्य चैव्द्याधौ ह्यावयोः प्रहरिष्यति। दृष्टमात्रो हि मुनिना भस्मीभूतो भविष्यति।।
atrāpyāgatya caivdyādhau hyāvayoḥ prahariṣyati| dṛṣṭamātro hi muninā bhasmībhūto bhaviṣyati||
The hind said: Even if the hunter were to come here and strike at us, he will be reduced to ashes on being merely glanced at by, the sage.”

इत्युक्ते वचने मृग्या रामर शनतुष्टया। मृगश्चोवाच हर्षेण समाविष्टः प्रियां स्वकाम।।
ityukte vacane mṛgyā rāmar śanatuṣṭayā| mṛgaścovāca harṣeṇa samāviṣṭaḥ priyāṃ svakām||
The hind said: When these words were uttered by the hind who was pleased to see Rāma, the stag too was delighted. He said to his beloved.

एवमेव महाभागे यद्वै वदसि भामिनि। जाने ऽहमपि रामस्य प्रभावं सुमहात्मनः।।
evameva mahābhāge yadvai vadasi bhāmini| jāne 'hamapi rāmasya prabhāvaṃ sumahātmanaḥ||
The hind said: “O highly fortunate and graceful lady, what you say is true. I too know the potentiality of the extremely noble-souled Rāma.

यो ऽयं संदृश्यते चास्य पार्श्वं शिष्यो ऽकृतव्रणः। सचाने न महाभागस्त्रातो व्याघ्रभयातुरः।।
yo 'yaṃ saṃdṛśyate cāsya pārśvaṃ śiṣyo 'kṛtavraṇaḥ| sacāne na mahābhāgastrāto vyāghrabhayāturaḥ||
The hind said: That disciple Akṛtavraṇa who is seen at his side has been fortunate enough to be protected from the clutches of a tiger by this Rāma. He had been greatly agitated due to the terrorising tiger.

अयं रामो महाभागे जमदग्निसुतो ऽनुजः। पितरं कार्त्तवीर्येण दृष्ट्वा चैव तिरस्कृतम।।
ayaṃ rāmo mahābhāge jamadagnisuto 'nujaḥ| pitaraṃ kārttavīryeṇa dṛṣṭvā caiva tiraskṛtam||
The hind said: This Rāma, O highly fortunate lady, is the youngest son of Jamadagni. On seeing his father insulted by Kārttavīrya, he had become infuriated. He took then the vow of exterminating kings. In order to get it fulfilled, he had formerly gone to the world of Brahmā.

चकारातितरां क्रुद्धः प्रतिज्ञां नृपघातिनीम। तत्पूर्तिकामो ह्यगमद्ब्रह्मलोकं पुरा ह्ययम।।
cakārātitarāṃ kruddhaḥ pratijñāṃ nṛpaghātinīm| tatpūrtikāmo hyagamadbrahmalokaṃ purā hyayam||
The hind said: This Rāma, O highly fortunate lady, is the youngest son of Jamadagni. On seeing his father insulted by Kārttavīrya, he had become infuriated. He took then the vow of exterminating kings. In order to get it fulfilled, he had formerly gone to the world of Brahmā.

स ब्रह्मा दिष्टवांश्चैनं शिवलोकं व्रजेति ह। तस्य त्वाज्ञां समादाय गतो ऽसौ शिवसन्निधिम।।
sa brahmā diṣṭavāṃścainaṃ śivalokaṃ vrajeti ha| tasya tvājñāṃ samādāya gato 'sau śivasannidhim||
The hind said: Brahmā had commanded him, “Go to the region of Śiva.” On receiving his behest, this sage went to the presence of Śiva.

प्रोवाचाखिलवृत्तान्त राज्ञश्चप्यात्मनः पितुः। स कृपालुर्महादेवः सभाज्य भृगुनन्दनम।।
provācākhilavṛttānta rājñaścapyātmanaḥ pituḥ| sa kṛpālurmahādevaḥ sabhājya bhṛgunandanam||
The hind said: He recounted to him all the incidents concerning the king and his father. Mahādeva, the merciful lord, honoured the scion of the family of Bhṛgu and gave him the excellent Mantra and the unbreakable Kavaca of Kṛṣṇa, his own pāśupata missile as well as other sets of missiles too.

The hind said: He recounted to him all the incidents concerning the king and his father. Mahādeva, the merciful lord, honoured the scion of the family of Bhṛgu and gave him the excellent Mantra and the unbreakable Kavaca of Kṛṣṇa, his own pāśupata missile as well as other sets of missiles too.

विसर्जयामास मुदा दत्त्वा शस्त्राणि चादरात। सो ऽयमत्रागतो भद्रे मेत्रसाधनतत्परः।।
visarjayāmāsa mudā dattvā śastrāṇi cādarāt| so 'yamatrāgato bhadre metrasādhanatatparaḥ||
The hind said: He joyously bade farewell to him, after giving the weapons eagerly and with due regard. O gentle lady, he has come here eager to practise the Mantra.

नित्यं जपति धर्मात्मा कृष्णस्य कवचं सुधीः। शतवर्षाणि चाप्यस्य गतानि सुमहात्मनः।।
nityaṃ japati dharmātmā kṛṣṇasya kavacaṃ sudhīḥ| śatavarṣāṇi cāpyasya gatāni sumahātmanaḥ||
