श्राद्धकल्पे नक्षत्रश्राद्धं नाम अष्टादशो ऽध्यायः।। 18।। किं स्विद्दत्तं पितॄणां तु तृप्तिदं वदतां वर। किंस्वित्स्याच्चिररात्राय किं वानन्त्याय कल्पते।।
śrāddhakalpe nakṣatraśrāddhaṃ nāma aṣṭādaśo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 18|| kiṃ sviddattaṃ pitṝṇāṃ tu tṛptidaṃ vadatāṃ vara| kiṃsvitsyāccirarātrāya kiṃ vānantyāya kalpate||
Śamyu said: “What, O excellent one among the eloquent persons, when offered to the Pitṛs, yields satisfaction (unto them)? What shall be beneficent for a long time? What is conducive to infinite bliss?”

हवीषि श्राद्धकल्पे तु यानि श्राद्धविदो विदुः। तानि मे शृणु सर्वाणि फलं चैषां यथातथम।।
havīṣi śrāddhakalpe tu yāni śrāddhavido viduḥ| tāni me śṛṇu sarvāṇi phalaṃ caiṣāṃ yathātatham||
Bṛhaspati explained: Listen from me to all those offerings which those who are conversant with the ritualistic details of Śrāddha know. Listen to their due benefits as well.

तिलैर्व्रीहियवैमाषैरद्भिर्मूलफलैस्तथा। दत्तेन मासं प्रीयन्ते श्राद्धेन हि पितामहाः।।
tilairvrīhiyavaimāṣairadbhirmūlaphalaistathā| dattena māsaṃ prīyante śrāddhena hi pitāmahāḥ||
Bṛhaspati explained: If gingelly seeds, grains of rice, barleys, pulses, water libations, roots and fruits were offered in Śrāddha the grandfathers are pleased for the period of a month.

मत्स्यैः प्रीणन्ति द्वौ मासौ त्रीन्मासान्हारिणेन तु। शाशेन चतुरो मासान्पञ्च प्रीणाति शाकुनैः।।
matsyaiḥ prīṇanti dvau māsau trīnmāsānhāriṇena tu| śāśena caturo māsānpañca prīṇāti śākunaiḥ||
Bṛhaspati explained: They are satisfied for two months, if Śrāddha is offered with different kinds of fish. They are satisfied for three months, if the Śrāddha is offered with venison (deer’s flesh).

वाराहेण तु षण्मासाञ्छागलं सप्तमासिकम। अष्टमासिकमित्युक्तं यच्च पार्वतकं भवेत।।
vārāheṇa tu ṣaṇmāsāñchāgalaṃ saptamāsikam| aṣṭamāsikamityuktaṃ yacca pārvatakaṃ bhavet||
Bṛhaspati explained: They are pleased for six months if Śrāddha is performed with boar’s flesh.

Bṛhaspati explained: The grandfathers are delighted For nine months with the flesh of Ruru variety of deer.

औरभ्रेण च मांसेन मासानेकादशैव तु। श्राद्धे च तृप्तिदं गव्यं पयः संवत्सरं द्विजाः।।
aurabhreṇa ca māṃsena māsānekādaśaiva tu| śrāddhe ca tṛptidaṃ gavyaṃ payaḥ saṃvatsaraṃ dvijāḥ||
Bṛhaspati explained: The satisfaction lasts for eleven months if sheep’s flesh is offered in the Śrāddha. O Brāhmaṇas, cow’s milk offered in the Śrāddha, yields satisfaction (to the Pitṛs) for a year.

आनन्त्याय भवेत्तद्वत्खड्गमांसं पितृक्षये। पायसं मधुसर्पिर्भ्यां छायायां कुञ्जरस्य च।।
ānantyāya bhavettadvatkhaḍgamāṃsaṃ pitṛkṣaye| pāyasaṃ madhusarpirbhyāṃ chāyāyāṃ kuñjarasya ca||
Bṛhaspati explained: The flesh of the rhinoceros shall be conducive to infinite bliss in the abode of the Pitṛs. Milk pudding offered along with honey and ghee at the time of Gajacchāyā yields perpetual satisfaction.

Bṛhaspati explained: There is perpetual satisfaction if the flesh of a black goat is offered. In this connection there are certain gāthās (traditional verses) sung by the Pitṛs as recounted by those conversant with the ancient lore.

gayādīnāṃ phalaṃ tāta brūhi me paripṛcchataḥ| dātṝṇāṃ caiva yatpuṇyaṃ nikhilena pravīhi me||
Śamyu said: “O dear father, recount to me who ask, the fruit of Gayā etc; mention fully the merits to the donors”.

गयायामक्षयं श्राद्धञ्जपहोमतपांसि च। पितृक्षये हि तत्पुत्र तस्मात्तत्राक्षयं स्मृतम।।
gayāyāmakṣayaṃ śrāddhañjapahomatapāṃsi ca| pitṛkṣaye hi tatputra tasmāttatrākṣayaṃ smṛtam||
Bṛhaspati said: “The Śrāddha at Gayā is of everlasting benefit. So also the Japas, Homas, the penances. It is in the abode of the Pitṛs, O son, and therefore the Śrāddha there is remembered as yielding an everlasting benefit.

पूर्णायामेकविंशं तु गौर्यामुत्पादितः सुतः। महामहांश्च जुहुयादिति तस्य फलं स्मृतम। फलं वृषस्य वक्ष्यामि गदतो मे निबोधत।।
pūrṇāyāmekaviṃśaṃ tu gauryāmutpāditaḥ sutaḥ| mahāmahāṃśca juhuyāditi tasya phalaṃ smṛtam| phalaṃ vṛṣasya vakṣyāmi gadato me nibodhata||
Bṛhaspati said: The son begot of a Gaurī type of a girl after she had completed her twenty-first year shall perform great sacrifices. (?) This is remembered as its fruit.

यो ददाति गुडोन्मिश्रतिलानि श्राद्धकर्मणि। मधु वामधुमिश्रं वा सर्वमेवाक्षयं भवेत।।
yo dadāti guḍonmiśratilāni śrāddhakarmaṇi| madhu vāmadhumiśraṃ vā sarvamevākṣayaṃ bhavet||
Bṛhaspati said: If a person gives during the Śrāddha rite gingelly seeds mixed with jaggery, honey, or something mixed with honey—everything becomes everlasting in yielding benefits.

न ब्राह्मणं परिक्षेत सदा देयं हि मानवैः। दैवेकर्मणि पित्र्ये च श्रूयते वै परीक्षणम।।
na brāhmaṇaṃ parikṣeta sadā deyaṃ hi mānavaiḥ| daivekarmaṇi pitrye ca śrūyate vai parīkṣaṇam||
Bṛhaspati said: (Charitable gifts) should always be given by men. One should not test the Brāhmaṇa, It is heard (i.e. it is laid down in the Vedas) that a Brāhmaṇa is to be tested in rites pertaining to the Pitṛs and gods.

सर्ववेदव्रतस्नाताः पङ्क्तीनां पावना द्विजाः। ये च भाषाविदः केचिद्ये च व्याकरणे रताः।।
sarvavedavratasnātāḥ paṅktīnāṃ pāvanā dvijāḥ| ye ca bhāṣāvidaḥ kecidye ca vyākaraṇe ratāḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: The Brāhmaṇas who have performed ablutions after observing the holy, rites prescribed in the Vedas are those who sanctify the row (of Brāhmaṇa diners).

श्राद्धीया ब्रह्मणा ये तु योगव्रतसुनिष्ठिताः। त्रयो ऽपि पूजितास्तेन ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः।।
śrāddhīyā brahmaṇā ye tu yogavratasuniṣṭhitāḥ| trayo 'pi pūjitāstena brahmaviṣṇumaheśvarāḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: If a person honours those who are well established in yogic rites and Brāhmaṇas worthy of being invited for Śrāddha rites, the three deities Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara are thereby worshipped by him.

पितृभिः सह लोकाश्च यो ह्येतान्पूजयेन्नरः। पवित्राणां पवित्रं च मङ्गलानां च मङ्गलम।।
pitṛbhiḥ saha lokāśca yo hyetānpūjayennaraḥ| pavitrāṇāṃ pavitraṃ ca maṅgalānāṃ ca maṅgalam||
Bṛhaspati said: The man who worships these Brāhmaṇas attains the same world as that of the Pitṛs.

प्रथमः सर्वधर्माणां योगधर्मो निगद्यते। अपाङ्क्तेयान्प्रवक्ष्यमि गदतो मे निबोधत।।

Bṛhaspati said: The man who worships these Brāhmaṇas attains the same world as that of the Pitṛs.

कितवो मद्यपो यश्च पशुपालो निराकृतः। ग्रामप्रेष्यो वार्धुषिको ह्यापणो वणिजस्तथा।।
kitavo madyapo yaśca paśupālo nirākṛtaḥ| grāmapreṣyo vārdhuṣiko hyāpaṇo vaṇijastathā||
Bṛhaspati said: A rogue, one who drinks liquor, one who keeps animals, one who has been banished, one who works as the common servant of all the villagers, one whose profession is usury, one who does business in the bazar.

अगार दाही गरदो वृषलो ग्रामयाजकः। काण्डपृष्ठो ऽथ कुण्डाशी मधुपः सोमविक्रयी।।
agāra dāhī garado vṛṣalo grāmayājakaḥ| kāṇḍapṛṣṭho 'tha kuṇḍāśī madhupaḥ somavikrayī||
Bṛhaspati said: One who burns houses, one who gives poison, a Śūdra, a common priest of the village performing a Yajña (on behalf of anyone and everyone), a Kāṇḍapṛṣṭha (a Brāhmaṇa who lives by making arrows and other weapons), a Kuṇḍāśin (a pander, a pimp), one who imbibes liquor, one who sells Soma juice.

समुद्रान्तरितो भृत्यः पिशुनः कूटसाक्षिकः। पित्रा विवदमानश्च यस्य चोपपतिर्गृहे।।
samudrāntarito bhṛtyaḥ piśunaḥ kūṭasākṣikaḥ| pitrā vivadamānaśca yasya copapatirgṛhe||
Bṛhaspati said: One who has gone overseas, a person who works as a servant, a back-biter, one guilty of perjury, one who argues with his father, one who keeps his wife’s paramour in his own house.

अभिशस्तस्तथा स्तेनः शिल्पं यश्चोपजीवति। स्तवकः सूपकारश्च यश्च मित्राणि निन्दति।।
abhiśastastathā stenaḥ śilpaṃ yaścopajīvati| stavakaḥ sūpakāraśca yaśca mitrāṇi nindati||
Bṛhaspati said: An Abhiśasta (a wicked and cursed fellow), a thief, one who maintains himself by means of arts and crafts, a panegyrist, a cook and one who deceives friends.

काणश्च खञ्जकश्चैव नास्तिको वेदवर्जितः। उन्मत्तो ऽप्यथ षण्ढश्च भ्रूणहा गुरुतल्पगः।।
kāṇaśca khañjakaścaiva nāstiko vedavarjitaḥ| unmatto 'pyatha ṣaṇḍhaśca bhrūṇahā gurutalpagaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: A one-eyed fellow, a lame man, an atheist, one who has discarded the study of the Vedas, a mad fellow, a eunuch, one who has killed a child in the womb, a person who defiles the preceptor’s bed.

भिषग्जीवी प्राशनिकः परस्त्रीं यश्च सेवते। विक्रीणाति च यो ब्रह्मव्रतानि नियमांस्तथा।।
bhiṣagjīvī prāśanikaḥ parastrīṃ yaśca sevate| vikrīṇāti ca yo brahmavratāni niyamāṃstathā||
Bṛhaspati said: One who maintains himself with the help of a physician, a glutton, one who commits adultery, one who sells Brahminical holy rites and observances—all these are the defilers of rows.

नष्टं स्यान्नास्तिके दत्तं व्रतघ्ने चापवर्जितम। यच्चवाणिजके दत्तं नेह नामुत्र संभवेत।।

श्रद्धया श्राद्धकल्पं तु यस्त्विमं नियतः पठेत। सर्वाण्येतानि वाप्नोति तीर्थदानफलानि च।।
śraddhayā śrāddhakalpaṃ tu yastvimaṃ niyataḥ paṭhet| sarvāṇyetāni vāpnoti tīrthadānaphalāni ca||
Bṛhaspati said: He who regularly studies this Śrāddha Kalpa with faith achieves all these as well as the benefits of visiting holy centres and offering charitable gifts.

sa paṅktipāvanaścaiva dvijānāmagrabhugbhavet| āśrāvya ca dvijānso 'tha sarvakāmānavāpnuyāt||
Bṛhaspati said: He is the sanctifier of the rows of diners. He shall partake of the feast at the head of Brāhmaṇas. One who is obedient to the Brāhmaṇas and who serves them shall attain all desires.

yaścaitacchṛṇuyānnityama nyāṃśca śrāvayeddvijaḥ| anasūyurjitakrodho lobhamohavivarjitaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said: If a person listens to this always, if a Brāhmaṇa expounds this to others, if he is free from jealousy, if he has conquered anger and if he has rid himself of greed and delusion he attains ṭhe benefit of visiting holy centres etc. as well as giving charitable gifts etc and the excellent means of heaven and Mokṣa undoubtedly. Here, he attains the greatest nourishment. Hence, one shall always perform Śrāddha.

tīrthādīnāṃ phalaṃ prāpya dānādīnāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ| mokṣopāyaṃ labhecchreṣṭhaṃ svargopāyaṃ na saṃśayaḥ| iha cāpi parā puṣṭhistasmātkurvīta nityaśaḥ||

इमं विधिं यो हि पठेदतन्द्रितः समाहितः संसदि पर्वसंधिषु। अपत्यभागी च परेण तेजसा दिवौकसां स व्रजते सलोकताम।।
imaṃ vidhiṃ yo hi paṭhedatandritaḥ samāhitaḥ saṃsadi parvasaṃdhiṣu| apatyabhāgī ca pareṇa tejasā divaukasāṃ sa vrajate salokatām||
Bṛhaspati said: If a person reads this procedure (of Śrāddha) with alertness, concentration and mental purity in the assembly (of scholars) during the junctions of festive occasions, he shall obtain children. With the greatest refulgence he attains the same world as the heaven-dwellers.

येन प्रोक्तस्त्वयं कल्पो नमस्तस्मै स्वयंभुवे। महायोगेश्वरेभ्यश्च सदा च प्रणतो ऽस्म्यहम।।
yena proktastvayaṃ kalpo namastasmai svayaṃbhuve| mahāyogeśvarebhyaśca sadā ca praṇato 'smyaham||
Bṛhaspati said: Obeisance to that selfborn Lord by whom this treatise has been recounted. I bow down always to the great leaders of the Yoga cult.
