श्राद्धकल्पे तिथिश्राद्धवर्णनं नाम सप्तदशो ऽध्यायः।। 17।। यमस्तु यानि श्राद्धानि प्रोवाच शशबिन्दवे। तानि मे शृणु कार्याणि नक्षत्रेषु पृथक पृथक।।
śrāddhakalpe tithiśrāddhavarṇanaṃ nāma saptadaśo 'dhyāyaḥ|| 17|| yamastu yāni śrāddhāni provāca śaśabindave| tāni me śṛṇu kāryāṇi nakṣatreṣu pṛthak pṛthak||
Bṛhaspati said:: “Listen from me to the details of the Śrāddhas that should be separately performed under different constellations (nakṣatra). These had been recounted to Śaśabindu by Yama.

श्राद्धं यः कृत्तिकायोगं कुरुते सततं नरः। अग्नीनाधाय स स्वर्गे राजते सुदृढव्रतः।।
śrāddhaṃ yaḥ kṛttikāyogaṃ kurute satataṃ naraḥ| agnīnādhāya sa svarge rājate sudṛḍhavrataḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: The man who always performs the Śrāddha under the Kṛttikā constellation after gathering the sacred fires, shines in the heaven. He must strictly adhere to the obervances of these holy rites.

अपत्यकामो रोहिण्यां सौम्ये तेजस्विना भवेत। प्रायशः क्रूरकर्माणि आर्द्रायां श्राद्धमाचरन।।
apatyakāmo rohiṇyāṃ saumye tejasvinā bhavet| prāyaśaḥ krūrakarmāṇi ārdrāyāṃ śrāddhamācaran||
Bṛhaspati said:: He who desires children should perform Śrāddha under Rohiṇī constellation.

क्षेत्रभागी भवेत्पुत्री श्राद्धं कृत्वा पुनर्वसौ। पुष्टिकामः पुनस्तिष्ये श्राद्धं कुर्वीत मानवः।।
kṣetrabhāgī bhavetputrī śrāddhaṃ kṛtvā punarvasau| puṣṭikāmaḥ punastiṣye śrāddhaṃ kurvīta mānavaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: By performing Śrāddha under Punarvasu constellation one inherits a share in fields (agricultural lands) and becomes blessed with sons.

आश्लेषासु पितॄनर्चन्वीरान्पुत्रानवाप्नुयात। जातीनां भवति श्रेष्ठो मघासु श्राद्धमाचरन।।
āśleṣāsu pitṝnarcanvīrānputrānavāpnuyāt| jātīnāṃ bhavati śreṣṭho maghāsu śrāddhamācaran||
Bṛhaspati said:: One who worships the Pitṛs under Āśleṣā constellation shall attain heroic sons.

फाल्गुनीषु पितॄनर्चन्सौभाग्यं लभते नरः। प्रदानशीलः सापत्य उत्तरासु करोति यः।।
phālgunīṣu pitṝnarcansaubhāgyaṃ labhate naraḥ| pradānaśīlaḥ sāpatya uttarāsu karoti yaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: The man who worships the Pitṛs under Pūrvā Phālgunī constellation obtains good fortune.

संसत्सु मुख्यो भवति हस्ते ऽभ्यर्च्य पितॄनपि। चित्रायां चैव यः कुर्यात्पश्येद्रूपवतः सुतान।।
saṃsatsu mukhyo bhavati haste 'bhyarcya pitṝnapi| citrāyāṃ caiva yaḥ kuryātpaśyedrūpavataḥ sutān||
Bṛhaspati said:: By worshipping the Pitṛs under the constellation Hasta, one becomes the chief man in the assemblies.

स्वातिना चैव यः कुर्याद्वाणिज्ये लाभमाप्नुयात। पुत्रार्थी तु विशाखासु श्राद्धमीहेत मालवः।।
svātinā caiva yaḥ kuryādvāṇijye lābhamāpnuyāt| putrārthī tu viśākhāsu śrāddhamīheta mālavaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: He who performs Śrāddha under Svāti constellation shall acquire profit in trade.

अनुराधासु कुर्वाणो नरश्चक्रं प्रवर्त्तयेत। आधिपत्यं भवेच्छ्रेष्ठं ज्येष्ठायां सततं तु यः।।
anurādhāsu kurvāṇo naraścakraṃ pravarttayet| ādhipatyaṃ bhavecchreṣṭhaṃ jyeṣṭhāyāṃ satataṃ tu yaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: One who performs Śrāddha under the constellation Anurādhā shall be able to exercise the sovereignty of a realm. He who always performs Śrāddha under Jyeṣṭhā constellation shall acquire excellent overlordship.

मूलेनारोग्यमिच्छन्ति ह्याषाढासु महद्यशः। उत्तरासु तु कुर्वाणो वीतशोको भवेन्नरः।।
mūlenārogyamicchanti hyāṣāḍhāsu mahadyaśaḥ| uttarāsu tu kurvāṇo vītaśoko bhavennaraḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: They who wish for freedom from illness should perform Śrāddha under Mūla constellation.

श्रवणेन तु लोकेषु प्राप्नुयात्परमां गतिम। राज्यभागी धनिष्ठासु प्राप्नुया द्विपुलं धनम।।
śravaṇena tu lokeṣu prāpnuyātparamāṃ gatim| rājyabhāgī dhaniṣṭhāsu prāpnuyā dvipulaṃ dhanam||
Bṛhaspati said:: By performing Śrāddha under Śravaṇa constellation one attains the greatest goal in the worlds.

श्राद्धनिर्जितलोकश्च वेदान सांगानवाप्नुयात। नक्षत्रैर्वारुणैः कुर्वन्भिषक्सिद्धिमवाप्नुयात।।
śrāddhanirjitalokaśca vedān sāṃgānavāpnuyāt| nakṣatrairvāruṇaiḥ kurvanbhiṣaksiddhimavāpnuyāt||
Bṛhaspati said:: By performing Śrāddha under the constellation (nakṣatra) pertaining to Varuṇa (i.e. constellation Śatabhiṣak) one conquers the worlds by means of the Śrāddhas, attains (the mastery of) the Vedas along with the ancillary subjects and obtains the greatest achievements of physicians.

पूर्वप्रौष्ठ पदे कुर्वन्विन्देताजीविकान्बहून। उत्तरास्वनतिक्रम्य विन्देद्गा वै सहस्रशः।।
pūrvaprauṣṭha pade kurvanvindetājīvikānbahūn| uttarāsvanatikramya vindedgā vai sahasraśaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: One who performs Śrāddha under Pūrvā-Prauṣṭhapadā (Bhādrapadā) constellation shall obtain many ways and means of sustenance.

बहुकुप्यकृतं द्रव्यं विन्देत्कुर्वन्सुरेवतीम। अश्वानश्वयुजा भक्तो भरण्यां साधुसत्तमः।।
bahukupyakṛtaṃ dravyaṃ vindetkurvansurevatīm| aśvānaśvayujā bhakto bharaṇyāṃ sādhusattamaḥ||
Bṛhaspati said:: One who performs Śrāddha under the excellent constellation Revatī acquires much wealth by means of metals other than silver and gold.

इमं श्राद्धविधिं कुर्वञ्छशबिन्दुर्महीमिमाम। कृत्स्नां बलेन सो ऽक्लिष्ठो लभ्ध्वा च प्रशशास ह।।
imaṃ śrāddhavidhiṃ kurvañchaśabindurmahīmimām| kṛtsnāṃ balena so 'kliṣṭho labhdhvā ca praśaśāsa ha||
Bṛhaspati said:: By performing Śrāddhas, in accordance with these injunctions regarding Śrāddhas, Śaśabindu acquired the entire earth through his prowess with ease (lit. without any strain) and ruled over it.
