asminkalpe tvayā noktaḥ prādurbhāvo mahātmanaḥ| mahādevasya rudrasya sādhakairṛṣibhiḥ saha||
The Sage said: The manifestation in this Kalpa of the noble-souled great lord Rudra along with the Sādhaka (spiritual aspirants) has not been narrated by you.

उत्पत्तिरादिसर्गस्य मया प्रोक्ता समासतः। विस्तरेण प्रवक्ष्यामि नामानि तनुभिः सह।।
utpattirādisargasya mayā proktā samāsataḥ| vistareṇa pravakṣyāmi nāmāni tanubhiḥ saha||
Sūta replied: The origin of the primordial creation has been succinctly mentioned by me. I shall now narrate in detail the names along with the physical bodies.

पत्नीषु जनयामास महादेवः सुतान्बहून। कल्पेष्वन्येष्वतीतेषु ह्यस्मिन्कल्पे तु ताञ्शृणु।।
patnīṣu janayāmāsa mahādevaḥ sutānbahūna| kalpeṣvanyeṣvatīteṣu hyasminkalpe tu tāñśṛṇu||
Sūta replied: Mahādeva begot of his wives many sons in the other Kalpas that have passed by. Listen to those (procreated) in this Kalpa.

कल्पादावात्मनस्तुल्यं सुतमध्यायत प्रभुः। प्रादुरा सीत्ततोङ्के ऽस्य कुमारो नीललोहितः।।
kalpādāvātmanastulyaṃ sutamadhyāyata prabhuḥ| prādurā sīttatoṅke 'sya kumāro nīlalohitaḥ||
Sūta replied: In the beginning of the Kalpa, the lord contemplated on a son on a par with himself. Thereafter, the child Nīlalohita appeared on his lap.

रुरोद सुस्वरं घोरं निर्दहन्निव तेजसा। दृष्ट्वा रुदन्तं सहसा कुमारं नीललोहितम।।
ruroda susvaraṃ ghoraṃ nirdahanniva tejasā| dṛṣṭvā rudantaṃ sahasā kumāraṃ nīlalohitam||
Sūta replied: He cried loudly in a terrible manner (voice). He appeared as though he would burn by means of his briliance. On seeing the child Nīlalohita crying suddenly, Brahmā spoke to him—“Why do you cry, O child?” He replied—“Give me at the outset a name, O Grandfather.”

Sūta replied: He cried loudly in a terrible manner (voice). He appeared as though he would burn by means of his briliance. On seeing the child Nīlalohita crying suddenly, Brahmā spoke to him—“Why do you cry, O child?” He replied—“Give me at the outset a name, O Grandfather.”

rudrastvaṃ deva nāmāsi sa ityukto 'rudatpunaḥ| kiṃ rodiṣi kumāreti brahmā taṃ pratyabhāṣata||
Sūta replied: “O lord, you are named Rudra”. On being told thus he cried again. “Why do you cry, O child?” asked Brahmā to him.

नाम देहि द्वितीयं मे इत्युवाच स्वयंभुवम। भवस्त्वं देवनाम्नासि इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः।।
nāma dehi dvitīyaṃ me ityuvāca svayaṃbhuvam| bhavastvaṃ devanāmnāsi ityuktaḥ so 'rudatpunaḥ||
Sūta replied: “Give me a second name”, said he to the self-born Lord. “You are Bhava byname, O Lord”. On being told thus he cried again.

kiṃ rodiṣīti taṃ brahmā rudantaṃ pratyuvāca ha| tṛtīyaṃ dehi me nāma ityuktaḥ so 'bravītpunaḥ||
Sūta replied: “Why do you cry?”, enquired Brahmā of the crying child. “Give me a third name”. On being told thus, he said again.

Sūta replied: “O lord, you are Śarva by name.” On being told thus he cried again, “Why do you cry?”, asked Brahmā again to the crying child.

चतुर्थ देहि मे नाम इत्युक्तः सो ऽब्रवीत्पुनः। ईशानो देवनाम्नासि इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः।।
caturtha dehi me nāma ityuktaḥ so 'bravītpunaḥ| īśāno devanāmnāsi ityuktaḥ so 'rudatpunaḥ||
Sūta replied: “Give me a fourth name.” On being told thus, he said again, “O lord, you are īśāna by name”. On being told thus he cried again.

किं रोदिषीति तं ब्रह्मा रुदन्तं पुनरब्रवीत। पञ्चमं नाम देहीति प्रत्युवाच स्वयंभुवम।।
kiṃ rodiṣīti taṃ brahmā rudantaṃ punarabravīt| pañcamaṃ nāma dehīti pratyuvāca svayaṃbhuvam||
Sūta replied: “Why do you cry”, said Brahmā to that crying child again. He replied to the self-born lord—“Give me a fifth name.”

पशूनां त्वं पतिर्देव इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः। किं रोदिषीति तं ब्रह्मा रुदन्तं पुनरब्रवीत।।
paśūnāṃ tvaṃ patirdeva ityuktaḥ so 'rudatpunaḥ| kiṃ rodiṣīti taṃ brahmā rudantaṃ punarabravīt||
Sūta replied: “You are the lord and master of all Paśus (Animals, living beings)”. On being told thus, he cried again. “Why do you cry?” said Brahmā to that crying child, once again.

षष्ठं वै देहि मे नाम इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाच तम। भीमस्त्वं देव नाम्नासि इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः।।
ṣaṣṭhaṃ vai dehi me nāma ityuktaḥ pratyuvāca tam| bhīmastvaṃ deva nāmnāsi ityuktaḥ so 'rudatpunaḥ||
Sūta replied: “Indeed, give me the sixth name”. On being told thus he replied to him—“O lord, you are Bhīma by name”. On being told thus he cried again.

किं रोदिषीति तं ब्रह्मा रुदन्तं पुनरब्रवीत। सप्तमं देहि मे नाम इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाच ह।।
kiṃ rodiṣīti taṃ brahmā rudantaṃ punarabravīt| saptamaṃ dehi me nāma ityuktaḥ pratyuvāca ha||
Sūta replied: “Why do you cry?”, asked Brahmā again to that crying child. “Give me the seventh name”. On being told thus he replied:

उग्रस्त्वं देव नाम्नासि इत्युक्तः सो ऽरुदत्पुनः। तं रुदन्तं कुमारं तु मारोदीरिति सो ऽब्रवीत।।
ugrastvaṃ deva nāmnāsi ityuktaḥ so 'rudatpunaḥ| taṃ rudantaṃ kumāraṃ tu mārodīriti so 'bravīt||
Sūta replied: “O lord, you are Ugra by name”. On being told thus, he cried again. To that crying child he said—“Da not cry”.

सो ऽब्रवीदष्टमं नाम देहि मे त्वं विभो पुनः। त्वं महादेवनामासि इत्युक्तो विरराम ह।।
so 'bravīdaṣṭamaṃ nāma dehi me tvaṃ vibho punaḥ| tvaṃ mahādevanāmāsi ityukto virarāma ha||
Sūta replied: He said—“Give me, O lord, the eighth name”. “You are Mahādeva by name”. On being told thus, he stopped crying.

लब्ध्वा नामानि चैतानि ब्रह्माणं नीललोहितः। प्रोवाच नाम्नामेतेषां स्थानानि प्रदिशेति ह।।
labdhvā nāmāni caitāni brahmāṇaṃ nīlalohitaḥ| provāca nāmnāmeteṣāṃ sthānāni pradiśeti ha||
Sūta replied: After securing these names. Nīlalohita requested Brahmā—“Indicate the abodes of these names”.

ततो विसृष्टास्तनव एषां नाम्ना स्वयंभुवा। सूर्यो जलं मही वायुर्व ह्निराकाशमेव च।।
tato visṛṣṭāstanava eṣāṃ nāmnā svayaṃbhuvā| sūryo jalaṃ mahī vāyurva hnirākāśameva ca||
Sūta replied: Then the bodies were allotted by the self-bora lord unto these names (abodes). They were—the sun, the water, the earth, the wind, the fire, the Ether, the initiated Brāhmaṇa and the Moon. Thus the bodies were of eight varieties. The lord is to be worshipped, saluted and bowed to in those bodies.

दीक्षिता ब्राह्मणश्चन्द्र इत्येवं ते ऽष्टधा तनुः। तेषु पूज्यश्च वन्द्यश्च नमस्कार्यश्च यत्नतः।।
dīkṣitā brāhmaṇaścandra ityevaṃ te 'ṣṭadhā tanuḥ| teṣu pūjyaśca vandyaśca namaskāryaśca yatnataḥ||
Sūta replied: Then the bodies were allotted by the self-bora lord unto these names (abodes). Sūta replied: Brahmā said again to the child Nīlalohita—“O lord, at the outset, your name has been mentioned by me as Rudra. The sun shall be the first body unto thy first name”. When this was uttered his splendour became an eye, which illuminates, then it entered the sun. Hence he (the sun) is remembered as Rudra. One shall avoid seeing the sun while rising or while setting.

Sūta replied: Brahmā said again to the child Nīlalohita—“O lord, at the outset, your name has been mentioned by me as Rudra. The sun shall be the first body unto thy first name”. When this was uttered his splendour became an eye, which illuminates, then it entered the sun. Hence he (the sun) is remembered as Rudra. One shall avoid seeing the sun while rising or while setting.

विवेश तत्तदादित्यं तस्माद्रुद्रो ह्यसौ स्मृतः। उद्यतमस्तं यन्तं च वर्जयेद्दर्शनेरविम।।
viveśa tattadādityaṃ tasmādrudro hyasau smṛtaḥ| udyatamastaṃ yantaṃ ca varjayeddarśaneravim||
Sūta replied: Brahmā said again to the child Nīlalohita—“O lord, at the outset, your name has been mentioned by me as Rudra. The sun shall be the first body unto thy first name”. When this was uttered his splendour became an eye, which illuminates, then it entered the sun. Hence he (the sun) is remembered as Rudra. One shall avoid seeing the sun while rising or while setting.

शश्वच्च जायते यस्माच्छश्वत्संतिष्ठते तु यत। तस्मात्मूर्यं न वीक्षेत आयुष्कामः शुचिः सदा।।
śaśvacca jāyate yasmācchaśvatsaṃtiṣṭhate tu yat| tasmātmūryaṃ na vīkṣeta āyuṣkāmaḥ śuciḥ sadā||
Sūta replied: Since the sun comes into view frequently and since it vanishes frequently, one, who desires for longevity, should not directly see the sun. One should always be pure.

अतीतानागतं रुद्रं विप्रा ह्याप्याययन्ति यत। उभे संध्ये ह्युपासीना गृणन्तः सामऋग्यजुः।।
atītānāgataṃ rudraṃ viprā hyāpyāyayanti yat| ubhe saṃdhye hyupāsīnā gṛṇantaḥ sāmaṛgyajuḥ||
Sūta replied: Worshipping during the two periods of junctions (the dawn and the dusk), and repeating the Sāman, Ṛk and Yajus hymns, the Brāhmaṇas propitiate and strengthen Rudra of the past and the future. At the time of rising, the sun stands on the Ṛks, at midday he stands on the Yajus and in the late afternoon, Rudra lies down and takes rest gradually. Hence, in fact, the sun never rises nor does he set.

उद्यन्स तिष्ठते ऋक्षु मध्याह्ने च यजुःष्वथ। सामस्वथापराह्णे तु रुद्रः संविशति क्रमात।।
udyansa tiṣṭhate ṛkṣu madhyāhne ca yajuḥṣvatha| sāmasvathāparāhṇe tu rudraḥ saṃviśati kramāt||
Sūta replied: Worshipping during the two periods of junctions (the dawn and the dusk), and repeating the Sāman, Ṛk and Yajus hymns, the Brāhmaṇas propitiate and strengthen Rudra of the past and the future. तस्माद्भवेन्नाभ्युदितो बाह्यस्तमित एव च। न रुद्रम्प्रति मेहेत सर्वावस्थं कथं चन।।
tasmādbhavennābhyudito bāhyastamita eva ca| na rudramprati meheta sarvāvasthaṃ kathaṃ cana||
Sūta replied: One shall never pass urine in the direction of Rudra (i.e. the sun) in whatever condition he may be.

एवं युक्तान द्विजान देवो रुद्रस्तान्न हिनस्ति वै। ततो ऽप्रवीत्पुनर्ब्रह्मा तं देवं नीललोहितम।।
evaṃ yuktān dvijān devo rudrastānna hinasti vai| tato 'pravītpunarbrahmā taṃ devaṃ nīlalohitam||
Sūta replied: Lord Rudra does not oppress the Brāhmaṇa who strictly adheres to these principles. Then Brahmā said again to that lord Nīlalohita.

द्वितीयं नामधेयं ते मया प्रोक्तं भवेति यत। एतस्यापो द्वितीया ते तनुर्नाम्ना भवत्विति।।
dvitīyaṃ nāmadheyaṃ te mayā proktaṃ bhaveti yat| etasyāpo dvitīyā te tanurnāmnā bhavatviti||
Sūta replied: Your second name has been mentioned by me as Bhava. Let ṭhe waters be the second physical body of this name of yours.

इत्युक्ते त्वथ तस्यासीच्छरीरस्थं रसात्मकम। विवेश तत्तदा यस्तु तस्मादापो भवः स्मृतः।।
ityukte tvatha tasyāsīccharīrasthaṃ rasātmakam| viveśa tattadā yastu tasmādāpo bhavaḥ smṛtaḥ||
Sūta replied: On this being mentioned, the element of the nature of Rasa (Juice)(i.e. water) became stationed in his body. Since he entered it, the water is remembered as Bhava.

यस्माद्भवन्ति भूतानि ताभ्यस्ता भावयन्ति च। भवनाद्रावनाच्चैव भूतानामुच्यते भवः।।
yasmādbhavanti bhūtāni tābhyastā bhāvayanti ca| bhavanādrāvanāccaiva bhūtānāmucyate bhavaḥ||
Sūta replied: Since the living beings are born (bhavanāt) of him, and since he evolves (bhāvanāt) the living beings through them (i.e. the waters) he is called Bhava (due to his creation and evolution of beings).

तस्मान्मूत्रं पुरीषं च नाप्सु कुर्वीत कर्हिचित। न निष्ठीवेन्नावगाहेन्नैव गच्छेच्च मैथुनम।।
tasmānmūtraṃ purīṣaṃ ca nāpsu kurvīta karhicit| na niṣṭhīvennāvagāhennaiva gacchecca maithunam||
Sūta replied: Hence, one shall never urinate or pass faeces into the waters. One should not spit into water, nor plunge into the water in the nude nor should anyone have sexual intercourse within the waters.

न चैताः परिचक्षीत वहन्त्यो वा स्थिता अपि। मैध्यामेध्यास्त्वपामेतास्तनवो मुनिभिः स्मृताः।।
na caitāḥ paricakṣīta vahantyo vā sthitā api| maidhyāmedhyāstvapāmetāstanavo munibhiḥ smṛtāḥ||
Sūta replied: Nor should one enumerate (?) these whether flowing or still. These bodies of the waters are declared by the sages as Medhya (Pure) and Amedhya (Impure).

विवर्णरसगन्धाश्च वर्ज्या अल्पाश्च सर्वशः। अपां योनिः समुद्रस्तु तस्मात्तं कामयन्ति ताः।।
vivarṇarasagandhāśca varjyā alpāśca sarvaśaḥ| apāṃ yoniḥ samudrastu tasmāttaṃ kāmayanti tāḥ||
Sūta replied: Waters devoid of taste, waters of bad odour and colour and water in very little quantity should be avoided on all occasions. The sea is the source of origin of waters. Hence waters desire it.

मध्याश्चैवामृता ह्यापो भवन्ति प्राप्य सागरम। तस्मादपो न रुन्धीत समुद्रं कामयन्ति ताः।।
madhyāścaivāmṛtā hyāpo bhavanti prāpya sāgaram| tasmādapo na rundhīta samudraṃ kāmayanti tāḥ||
Sūta replied: After reaching the sea, the waters become sacred and Amṛta (nectarine). Hence one should not obstruct the waters since they love the sea.

न हिनस्ति भवो देवो य एवं ह्यप्सु वर्तते। ततो ऽब्रवीत्पुनर्ब्रह्मा कुमारं नीललोहितम।।

Sūta replied: O Brāhmaṇas, let there be welfare unto the bipeds. Let there be welfare unto the quadrupeds. Now the names and bodies of Mahādeva have been recounted. Listen to the progeny of Bhṛgu.
