Maitreya said: Hearing thus the words of Kapila, the beloved of Kardama, Devahuti, bowing down to him, praised the essence of truth that leads to realization.

देवहूतिरुवाच। अथाप्यजोऽन्तःसलिले शयानं भूतेन्द्रियार्थात्ममयं वपुस्ते। गुणप्रवाहं सदशेषबीजं दध्यौ स्वयं यज्जठराब्जजातः
Devahuti said: Even though you are lying in the water, your form is composed of the elements and senses; you are the essence of all qualities, the seed of all creation.

You, O Lord, are the one who creates the universe, manifesting your power through the flow of qualities; you are the supreme being, beyond comprehension, with infinite strength.

स त्वं भृतो मे जठरेण नाथ कथं नु यस्योदर एतदासीत्। विश्वं युगान्ते वटपत्र एकः शेते स्म मायाशिशुरङ्घ्रिपानः
You, who are sustained in my belly, O Lord, how could it be that you were in the womb? At the end of the universe, you alone rest under the banyan leaf, as a child of illusion.

त्वं देहतन्त्रः प्रशमाय पाप्मनां निदेशभाजां च विभो विभूतये। यथावतारास्तव सूकरादय- स्तथायमप्यात्मपथोपलब्धये
You, O Lord, are the master of the body, the remover of sins, and the source of all opulence. Just as the incarnations of your divine form, may this also lead to the realization of the self.

यन्नामधेयश्रवणानुकीर्तना- द्यत्प्रह्वणाद्यत्स्मरणादपि क्वचित्। श्वादोऽपि सद्यः सवनाय कल्पते कुतः पुनस्ते भगवन् नु दर्शनात्
Whatever name you are called by, whatever is heard, chanted, or remembered, even a little of it is sufficient for liberation; how much more so, O Lord, is the vision of you?

अहो बत श्वपचोऽतो गरीयान् यज्जिह्वाग्रे वर्तते नाम तुभ्यम्। तेपुस्तपस्ते जुहुवुः सस्नुरार्या ब्रह्मानूचुर्नाम गृणन्ति ये ते
Alas, the lowly dog-eater is indeed great, for the name that rests on his tongue is yours. They who perform austerities and chant your name are revered by the wise.

I bow to you, O Vishnu, the supreme person, who is realized in the self, the essence of the Vedas, and who is free from the flow of qualities.

Kapila said: O mother, by this path, you will soon attain the supreme wood, which is well-served and established.

श्रद्धत्स्वैतन्मतं मह्यं जुष्टं यद्ब्रह्मवादिभिः। येन मामभवं याया मृत्युमृच्छन्त्यतद्विदः
With faith, that opinion which is pleasing to me, as stated by the Brahma-vids, by which those who know it escape from death.

Maitreya said: Thus showing the goddess, the Lord, having established her in his own nature, went to the place approved by Kapila.

She, too, by the instruction of her son, being endowed with yoga, was absorbed in the ashram near the Sarasvati.

अभीक्ष्णावगाहकपिशान् जटिलान् कुटिलालकान्। आत्मानं चोग्रतपसा बिभ्रती चीरिणं कृशम्
Constantly immersed in austerities, with matted hair and twisted locks, she, with intense penance, appeared as a thin ascetic.

गृहोद्यानं कुसुमितै रम्यं बह्वमरद्रुमैः। कूजद्विहङ्गमिथुनं गायन् मत्तमधुव्रतम्
The garden of the house is adorned with flowers, delightful with many celestial trees, where pairs of birds sing, intoxicated by the sweet honey.

Where the self, having entered, is praised by the celestial beings, nurtured by Kardama in the pond filled with fragrant lotuses.

In the forest, when her husband was away, she was distressed by the separation from him. Even knowing the truth, she felt lost, like a cow separated from her calf.

Meditating on that very God, her son Kapila, she became detached and remained in a home devoid of desires.

भक्तिप्रवाहयोगेन वैराग्येण बलीयसा। युक्तानुष्ठानजातेन ज्ञानेन ब्रह्महेतुना
Through the flow of devotion and the strength of renunciation, one attains knowledge that leads to the ultimate reality of Brahman.

विशुद्धेन तदाऽऽत्मानमात्मना विश्वतोमुखम्। स्वानुभूत्या तिरोभूतमायागुणविशेषणम्
With a pure mind, one realizes the self as all-pervading. Through personal experience, the specific qualities of illusion become obscured.

ब्रह्मण्यवस्थितमतिर्भगवत्यात्मसंश्रये। निवृत्तजीवापत्तित्वात्क्षीणक्लेशाऽऽप्तनिर्वृतिः
The mind, established in Brahman, takes refuge in the divine. Due to the cessation of worldly existence, it attains liberation from suffering.

नित्यारूढसमाधित्वात्परावृत्तगुणभ्रमा। न सस्मार तदाऽऽत्मानं स्वप्ने दृष्टमिवोत्थितः
Due to the constant state of meditation, the qualities of illusion are turned away. One does not remember the self, as if awakened from a dream.

तद्देहः परतः पोषोऽप्यकृशश्चाध्यसम्भवात्। बभौ मलैरवच्छन्नः सधूम इव पावकः
That body, though nourished by another, appears emaciated due to the influence of the mind. It shines like fire covered with smoke.

स्वाङ्गं तपोयोगमयं मुक्तकेशं गताम्बरम्। दैवगुप्तं न बुबुधे वासुदेवप्रविष्टधीः
The body, composed of austerity and yoga, with liberated hair and dressed in divine attire, does not recognize the one who has entered it.

एवं सा कपिलोक्तेन मार्गेणाचिरतः परम्। आत्मानं ब्रह्मनिर्वाणं भगवन्तमवाप ह

That place was the most virtuous field, renowned throughout the three worlds, where the name Siddhapada leads to perfection.

From it flowed a river, endowed with the qualities of the divine, which grants success and is served by the accomplished.

He who is absorbed in yoga and praised by the Sankhya teachers, is focused on the peace of the three worlds.

This has been stated, O father, as I have been asked about it, the dialogue of Kapila and Devahūti is indeed sacred.

य इदमनुशृणोति योऽभिधत्ते कपिलमुनेर्मतमात्मयोगगुह्यम्। भगवति कृतधीः सुपर्णकेता- वुपलभते भगवत्पदारविन्दम्
He who hears this and speaks of the teachings of the sage Kapila, who is the essence of self-yoga, attains the lotus feet of the Lord.
