Kapila said: This person certainly does not understand the great prowess of the Vedas, even when he is being overwhelmed like a strong wind by a dense cloud.

यं यमर्थमुपादत्ते दुःखेन सुखहेतवे। तं तं धुनोति भगवान् पुमान् शोचति यत्कृते
Whatever purpose he takes on, for the sake of suffering or happiness, that very person is purified by the Lord, lamenting for whom he acts.

The living being, in this world, takes birth in whatever womb he follows. In that womb, he attains liberation and does not stray away.

Even if one is in hell, one does not wish to abandon the body. Deluded by the divine illusion, one remains in the state of hell.

In the homes where deceit prevails, one who is unperturbed by the sorrows believes he is happy while performing actions to counteract suffering.

Those who are burdened by wealth may harm others; then they themselves are nourished by the sustenance of those whom they harm.

कुटुम्बभरणाकल्पो मन्दभाग्यो वृथोद्यमः। श्रिया विहीनः कृपणो ध्यायन् श्वसिति मूढधीः
The one who is destined to support a family, unfortunate and making futile efforts, devoid of prosperity, sighs while contemplating, with a foolish mind.

एवं स्वभरणाकल्पं तत्कलत्रादयस्तथा। नाद्रियन्ते यथापूर्वं कीनाशा इव गोजरम्
Thus, those who are engaged in their own sustenance and their spouses do not respect as before, like a cowherd who has lost his cattle.

He lies down, having been overwhelmed, like a householder who has been burdened. The fire of disease, which is difficult to extinguish, is fed by little food and little effort.

As the wind rises, it obstructs the channels of phlegm. The cough and breathlessness arise, causing the throat to make a rumbling sound.

He lies down, surrounded by his relatives, lamenting. Even when spoken to, he does not reply, having fallen under the bondage of time.

At that time, the messengers of Yama arrived, fierce and with terrible glances. Seeing them, the heart of the frightened one releases urine.

Bound by the nooses of suffering, forcibly around the neck, like a royal elephant, one is led along a long path.

With hearts torn apart, trembling in fear, while being devoured on the path by dogs, he remembers his sins.

क्षुत्तृट् परीतोऽर्कदवानलानिलैः सन्तप्यमानः पथि तप्तवालुके। कृच्छ्रेण पृष्ठे कशया च ताडितः चलत्यशक्तोऽपि निराश्रमोदके
Tormented by hunger and thirst, scorched by the sun and wind, he moves along the path, beaten by a thorn, unable to move, even in the water of the hermitage.

तत्र तत्र पतन् श्रान्तो मूर्च्छितः पुनरुत्थितः। पथा पापीयसा नीतस्तमसा यमसादनम्
There, falling down, exhausted, he faints and rises again, led by the sinful path into the darkness of Yama's abode.

Traveling a thousand yojanas, along ninety-nine paths, he reaches the place of suffering in two or three muhurta.

The one who wraps around the body with the flames of the fire, whether by one's own actions or by others, is the one who consumes the flesh of the self.

जीवतश्चान्त्राभ्युद्धारः श्वगृध्रैर्यमसादने। सर्पवृश्चिकदंशाद्यैर्दशद्भिश्चात्मवैशसम्
The living beings are uplifted from the clutches of the dogs and vultures in the realm of Yama, by the bites of serpents and scorpions, and by the tenfold tortures of the soul.

The act of cutting, the separation of limbs from elephants and others, the falling from the mountain peaks, and the obstruction in the caves of the mango trees.

यास्तामिस्रान्धतामिस्रा रौरवाद्याश्च यातनाः। भुङ्क्ते नरो वा नारी वा मिथः सङ्गेन निर्मिताः
Those who are entangled in the miseries of darkness, the tortures of the Rauravas, are consumed by men or women who are created through mutual association.

अत्रैव नरकः स्वर्ग इति मातः प्रचक्षते। या यातना वै नारक्यस्ता इहाप्युपलक्षिताः
Here, O Mother, it is said that hell and heaven are the same; the tortures that lead to hell are also observed here.

एवं कुटुम्बं बिभ्राण उदरम्भर एव वा। विसृज्येहोभयं प्रेत्य भुङ्क्ते तत्फलमीदृशम्
Thus, one who bears a family or even a burden, after abandoning fear, enjoys the fruits of such actions.

एकः प्रपद्यते ध्वान्तं हित्वेदं स्वकलेवरम्। कुशलेतरपाथेयो भूतद्रोहेण यद्भृतम्
One who surrenders, leaving aside this body, is supported by the path of greater skill, and is harmed by the enmity of beings.

The one who is eager to support his family through unrighteous means, goes to the ultimate darkness of ignorance.

From below, as long as the beings of the netherworld exist, they gradually ascend and return here, purified.
