नैतां ते॑ दे॒वा अ॑ददु॒स्तुभ्यं॑ नृपते॒ अत्त॑वे । मा ब्रा॑ह्म॒णस्य॑ राजन्य॒ गां जि॑घत्सो अना॒द्याम्॥१॥
naitāṃ te devā adaduḥ tubhyaṃ nṛpate attave mā brāhmaṇasya rājanya gāṃ jighatso anādyām
The gods did not grant you, O king, this for eating. Do not, O Rājanya, covet the Brāhmaṇa’s cow, which is not to be eaten.

अ॒क्षद्रु॑ग्धो राज॒न्यः पा॒प आ॑त्मपराजि॒तः । स ब्रा॑ह्म॒णस्य॒ गाम॑द्याद॒द्य जी॑वानि॒ माश्वः ॥२॥
akṣadrughdho rājanyaḥ pāpa ātmaparājitaḥ sa brāhmaṇasya gāmad yād adya jīvāni mā aśvaḥ
A Rājanya who cheats at dice, sinful, self-defeated—he would eat a Brāhmaṇa’s cow; may he not live today, nor his horse.

āviṣṭitā ghaviṣā pṛdā kūr iva carmaṇā sā brāhmaṇasya rājanya tṛṣṭaiṣā gaur anādyā
Smeared with sin, soaked, like a hide with grease—such is that unsuckled cow of the Brāhmaṇa, O Rājanya, thirsting and not to be eaten.

निर्वै क्ष॒त्रं नय॑ति॒ हन्ति॒ वर्चो॒ऽग्निरि॒वार॑ब्धो॒ वि दु॑नोति॒ सर्व॑म्। यो ब्रा॑ह्म॒णं मन्य॑ते॒ अन्न॑मे॒व स वि॒षस्य॑ पिबति तैमा॒तस्य॑ ॥४॥
nirvai kṣatraṃ nayati hanti varco agnir ivārabddho vi dunoti sarvam yo brāhmaṇaṃ manyate annam eva sa viṣasya pibati taimātasya
It destroys the Kṣatra, steals away splendor; like a kindled fire it burns and consumes all. Whoever thinks the Brāhmaṇa is food—he drinks sheer poison, the very bane of life.

य ए॑नं॒ हन्ति॑ मृ॒दुं मन्य॑मानो देवपी॒युर्धन॑कामो॒ न चि॒त्तात्। सं तस्येन्द्रो॒ हृद॑ये॒ऽग्निमि॑न्धे उ॒भे ए॑नं द्विष्टो॒ नभ॑सी॒ चर॑न्तम्॥५॥
ya enaṁ hanti mṛduṁ manyamāno devapīyur dhanakāmo na cittāt. saṁ tasya indro hṛdaye agnim indhe ubhe enaṁ dviṣṭo nabhasī carantam.
Whoever strikes him, thinking him meek, one who feeds on the gods, greedy for wealth, yet not mindful—Indra kindles fire in that man’s heart; both worlds loathe him as he wanders beneath the sky.

न ब्रा॑ह्म॒णो हिं॑सित॒व्यो॒३ऽग्निः प्रि॒यत॑नोरिव । सोमो॒ ह्यऽस्य दाया॒द इन्द्रो॑ अस्याभिशस्ति॒पाः ॥६॥
na brāhmaṇo hiṁsitavyo agniḥ priyatanor iva. somo hy asya dāyāda indro asyābhiśastipāḥ.
A Brāhmaṇa must not be harmed—like fire on a cherished hearth. Soma is his heir, and Indra is his guardian against curses.

श॒तापा॑ष्ठां॒ नि गि॑रति॒ तां न श॑क्नोति निः॒खिद॑म्। अन्नं॒ यो ब्र॒ह्मणां॑ म॒ल्वः स्वा॒द्व॑१द्मीति॒ मन्य॑ते ॥७॥
śatāpāṣṭhāṁ ni girati tāṁ na śaknoti niḥkhidam. annaṁ yo brahmaṇāṁ malvaḥ svādv admīti manyate.
He gulps a hundred mouthfuls yet cannot force a way out—he who thinks, “The food of the Brāhmaṇas is a tasty morsel for me.”

जिह्वा॒ ज्या भव॑ति॒ कुल्म॑लं॒ वाङ्ना॑डी॒का दन्ता॒स्तप॑सा॒भिदि॑ग्धाः । ते भि॑र्ब्रह्मा वि॑ध्यति देवपी॒यून् हृ॑द्ब॒लैर्धनु॑र्भिर्दे॒वजू॑तैः ॥८॥
jihvā jyā bhavati kulmalaṁ vāṅ-nāḍīkā dantās tapasābhidigdhāḥ. te bhir brahmā vidhyati devapīyūn hṛd-balair dhanurbhir devajūtaiḥ.
The tongue becomes the bowstring, the palate the bow; the speech-duct the string, teeth anointed by austerity. With these the Brāhmán pierces the god-eaters—bows strengthened in heart, god-driven.

ती॒क्ष्णेष॑वो ब्राह्म॒णा हे॑ति॒मन्तो॒ यामस्य॑न्ति शर॒व्यां॒३ न सा मृषा॑ । अ॒नु॒हाय॒ तप॑सा म॒न्युना॑ चो॒त दू॒रादव॑ भिन्दन्त्येनम्॥९॥
tīkṣṇeṣavo brāhmaṇā hetimanto yāmasyanti śaravyāṁ na sā mṛṣā. anuhāya tapasā manyunā cota dūrād ava bhindanty enam.
The Brāhmaṇas have keen shafts and armed might; their arrow never flies in vain. With austerity and wrath—as with a chariot—they strike him down even from afar.

ये स॒हस्र॒मरा॑ज॒न्नासन् दशश॒ता उ॒त। ते ब्रा॑ह्म॒णस्य॒ गां ज॒ग्ध्वा वै॑तह॒व्याः परा॑भवन्॥१०॥
ye sahasram arājan nāsan daśaśatā uta te brāhmaṇasya gāṃ jagdhvā vaitahavyāḥ parābhavan
O king, though they were a thousand, and even ten hundred, having devoured the cow of a Brāhmaṇa, the Vaitahavyas were overthrown.

गौरे॒व तान् ह॒न्यमा॑ना वैतह॒व्याँ अवा॑तिरत्। ये केस॑रप्राबन्धायाश्चर॒माजा॒मपे॑चिरन्॥११॥
gaur eva tān hanyamānā vaitahavyān avātirata ye kesara-prābandhāyāś caramājām apeciran
As if by a cow being slain, the Vaitahavyas were cast down—those who had bound the lion’s mane and cruelly flayed the last-born.

एक॑शतं॒ ता ज॒नता॒ या भूमि॒र्व्यऽधूनुत । प्र॒जां हिं॑सि॒त्वा ब्राह्म॑णीमसंभ॒व्यं परा॑भवन्॥१२॥
ekaśataṃ tā janatā yā bhūmir vy adhūnuta prajāṃ hiṃsitvā brāhmaṇīm asaṃbhavyaṃ parābhavan
A single hundred of those people the earth shook off. Having harmed offspring and wronged a Brāhmaṇa woman, they met with ruin.

दे॒व॒पी॒युश्च॑रति॒ मर्त्ये॑षु गरगी॒र्णो भ॑व॒त्यस्थि॑भूयान्। यो ब्रा॑ह्म॒णं दे॒वब॑न्धुं हि॒नस्ति॒ न स पि॑तृ॒याण॒मप्ये॑ति लो॒कम्॥१३॥
devapīyuś carati martyeṣu garagīrṇo bhavaty asthibhūyān yo brāhmaṇaṃ devabandhuṃ hinasti na sa pitṛyāṇam apy eti lokam
Deva-pīyus moves among mortals; he becomes a devourer of old age, heavy with bones. He who harms a Brāhmaṇa, kin of the gods, does not attain even the world of the fathers.

अ॒ग्निर्वै नः॑ पदवा॒यः सोमो॑ दाया॒द उ॑च्यते । ह॒न्ताभिश॒स्तेन्द्र॒स्तथा॒ तद् वे॒धसो॑ विदुः ॥१४॥
agnir vai naḥ padavāyaḥ somo dāyāda ucyate hantā bhiśasta indras tathā tad vedhaso viduḥ
Agni is our guide; Soma is called the heir. Indra is the slayer of the curse—thus the seers know.

इषु॑रिव दि॒ग्धा नृ॑पते पृदा॒कूरि॑व गोपते । सा ब्रा॑ह्म॒णस्येषु॑र्घो॒रा तया॑ विध्यति॒ पीय॑तः ॥१५॥
iṣur iva digdhā nṛpate pṛdākūr iva gopate | sā brāhmaṇasy eṣur ghorā tayā vidhyati pīyataḥ |
O king, like a poisoned arrow, O lord of cattle, like a bowstring—such is the fearsome arrow of the Brāhmaṇa; with it she strikes the one who drinks deeply.
