यद॒दः सं॑प्रय॒तीरहा॒वन॑दता हते॑। तस्मा॒दा न॒द्यो॒३ नाम॑ स्थ॒ ता वो॒ नामा॑नि सिन्धवः ॥१॥
yad adaḥ saṃprayatīr ahāvanadatā hate. tasmād ā nadyo nāma stha tā vo nāmāni sindhavaḥ
What those confluents have drunk and what has been offered in sacrifice—therefrom are you named, O rivers; by that are your names, O Sindhus.

यत् प्रेषि॑ता॒ वरु॑णे॒नाच्छीभं॑ स॒मव॑ल्गत । तदा॑प्नो॒दिन्द्रो॑ वो य॒तीस्तस्मा॑दापो॒ अनु॑ ष्ठन ॥२॥
yat preṣitā varuṇenācchībhaṃ samavalgata | tad āpnod indro vo yatīs tasmād āpo anu sthana
When, sent by Varuṇa, it leapt forth auspiciously, then Indra gained your courses; therefore the Waters follow after him.

अ॒प॒का॒मं स्यन्द॑माना॒ अवी॑वरत वो॒ हि क॑म्। इन्द्रो॑ वः॒ शक्ति॑भिर्देवी॒स्तस्मा॒द् वार्नाम॑ वो हि॒तम्॥३॥
apakāmaṃ syandamānā avīvarata vo hi kam | indro vaḥ śaktibhir devīs tasmād vārṇām vo hitam
Flowing down, you drove away what was not to be desired. Indra by his powers made you divine; therefore your chosen hue is the flood’s.

एको॑ वो दे॒वोऽप्य॑तिष्ठ॒त् स्यन्द॑माना यथाव॒शम्। उदा॑निषुर्म॒हीरिति॒ तस्मा॑दुद॒कमु॑च्यते ॥४॥
eko vo devo ’py atiṣṭhat syandamānā yathāvaśam | udāniṣur mahīr iti tasmād udakam ucyate
One god alone stood over you, flowing as he willed. He raised you, saying, “Great ones”; therefore it is called udaka, the up-risen.

आपो॑ भ॒द्रा घृ॒तमिदाप॑ आसन्न॒ग्नीषोमौ॑ बिभ्र॒त्याप॒ इत् ताः। ती॒व्रो रसो॑ मधुपृचा॑मरंग॒म आ मा॑ प्रा॒णेन॑ स॒ह वर्च॑सा गमेत्॥५॥
āpo bhadrā ghṛtam id āpa āsann agnīṣomau bibhraty āpa it tāḥ | tīvro raso madhu-pṛcā maraṅgama ā mā prāṇena saha varcasā gamet
Waters are auspicious; indeed these Waters were ghee, bearing Agni and Soma. Their essence is keen, honey-sweet, delight-bringing. May they come to me with breath and with radiance.

आदित् प॑श्याम्यु॒त वा॑ शृणो॒म्या मा॒ घोषो॑ गच्छति॒ वाङ् मा॑साम्। मन्ये॑ भेजा॒नो अ॒मृत॑स्य तर्हि॒ हिर॑ण्यवर्णा॒ अतृ॑पं य॒दा वः॑ ॥६॥
ādit paśyāmy uta vā śṛṇomy a mā ghoṣo gacchati vāṅ māsām | manye bhejāno amṛtasya tarhi hiraṇyavarṇā atṛpaṃ yadā vaḥ
I do not yet see, nor do I quite hear; let no clamor seize my speech or my months. I think, when I have partaken of the deathless, then, O golden-hued ones, I shall not be sated with you.

इ॒दं व॑ आपो॒ हृद॑यम॒यं व॒त्स ऋ॑तावरीः । इ॒हेत्थमेत॑ शक्वरी॒र्यत्रे॒दं वे॒शया॑मि वः ॥७॥
idaṁ va āpo hṛdayam ayaṁ vatsā ṛtāvarīḥ ihettham eta śakvarīr yatr edaṁ veśayāmi vaḥ
These Waters are the heart; this is the Calf, the truth-keeping ones. Come here thus, O chant-staves, where I settle you in place.
