भारतं सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि कृष्णमाहात्म्यलक्षणम । भूभारमहरद्विष्णुर निमित्तीकृत्य पाण्डवान ।।
bhārataṃ sampravakṣyāmi kṛṣṇamāhātmyalakṣaṇam | bhūbhāramaharadviṣṇur nimittīkṛtya pāṇḍavān ||
I will now declare the glory and characteristics of Krishna. Bearing the burden of the earth, the great Vishnu acted as the cause for the Pandavas.

विष्णुनाभ्यब्जजो ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मपुत्रो ऽत्रिरत्रितः । सोमः सोमाद्बुधस्तस्मादैल आसीत पुरूरवाः ।।
viṣṇunābhyabjajo brahmā brahmaputro 'triratritaḥ | somaḥ somādbudhastasmādaila āsīt purūravāḥ ||
From Vishnu's navel Brahma was born; Brahmā's son was Atrisuta (Atri's descendant). Soma, then Budha from Soma, and from them Ila — thus were the Purūras.

तस्मादायुस्ततो राजा नहुषो ऽतो ययातिकः । ततः पुरुस्तस्य वंशे भरतो ऽथ नृपः कुरुः ।।
tasmādāyustato rājā nahuṣo 'to yayātikaḥ | tataḥ purustasya vaṃśe bharato 'tha nṛpaḥ kuruḥ ||
From him came the king Nahusha, then Yayāti. From this line came Puru; from Puru were Bharata, then King Kuru.

तद्वंशे शान्तनुस्तस्माद्भीष्मो गङ्गासुतो ऽनुजौ । चित्राङ्गदो विचित्रश च सत्यवयाञ्च शान्तनोः ।।
tadvaṃśe śāntanustasmādbhīṣmo gaṅgāsuto 'nujau | citrāṅgado vicitraś ca satyavayāñca śāntanoḥ ||
In that line was Shantanu; from him Bhishma, born of the Ganges; the sons Chitrāṅgada and Vicitra, and Satyavatī's sons of Shantanu.

स्वर्गं गते शान्तनौ च भीष्मो भार्याविवर्जितः । अपालयत भ्रातृराज्यं बालश्चित्राङ्गदो हतः ।।
svargaṃ gate śāntanau ca bhīṣmo bhāryāvivarjitaḥ | apālayat bhrātṛrājyaṃ bālaścitrāṅgado hataḥ ||
When Shantanu died and Bhishma, separated from his wife, went to heaven, he entrusted the kingdom to his brother; the boy Chitrangada was slain.

चित्राङ्गदेन द्वे कन्ये काशिराजस्य चाम्बिका । अम्बालिका च भीष्मेण आनीते विजितारिणा ।।
citrāṅgadena dve kanye kāśirājasya cāmbikā | ambālikā ca bhīṣmeṇa ānīte vijitāriṇā ||
By Chitrangada two maidens — the queen of Kasi named Chambika and Ambalika — were brought by Bhishma, who had crossed the river.

भार्ये विचित्रवीर्यस्य यक्ष्मणा स दिवङ्गतः । सत्यवत्या ह्य अनुमतादम्बिकायां नृपोभवत ।।
bhārye vicitravīryasya yakṣmaṇā sa divaṅgataḥ | satyavatyā hy anumatādambikāyāṃ nṛpobhavat ||
Chitravīrya’s wife died of consumption; by the consent of Satyavatī, Kunti became wife to Pandu.

धृतराष्ट्रो ऽम्बालिकायां पाण्डुश च व्यासतः सुतः । गान्धार्यां धृतराष्ट्राच्च दुर्योधनमुखं शतम ।।
dhṛtarāṣṭro 'mbālikāyāṃ pāṇḍuś ca vyāsataḥ sutaḥ | gāndhāryāṃ dhṛtarāṣṭrācca duryodhanamukhaṃ śatam ||
Dhṛtarāṣṭra was son of Ambālikā; from Vyāsa was born Pandu. From Dhṛtarāṣṭra came Gandhari and a hundred sons headed by Duryodhana.

शतशृङ्गाश्रमपदे भार्यायोगाद यतो मृतिः । ऋषिशापात्ततो धर्मात कुन्त्यां पाण्डोर्युधिष्ठिरः ।।
śataśṛṅgāśramapade bhāryāyogād yato mṛtiḥ | ṛṣiśāpāttato dharmāt kuntyāṃ pāṇḍoryudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
At the hundred-humped hermitage death came to the wife; by a sage’s curse and in righteousness, Yudhishthira was born to Kunti.

वाताद्भीमो ऽर्जुनः शक्रान्माद्र्यामश्विकुमारतः । नकुलः सहदेवश च पाण्डुर्माद्रीयुतो मृतः ।।
vātādbhīmo 'rjunaḥ śakrānmādryāmaśvikumārataḥ | nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca pāṇḍurmādrīyuto mṛtaḥ ||
From the wind-born (Vāta) came Bhīma; from Śakra came Arjuna; from Mādrī came the twins Aśvaka- and Kumārata; Nakula and Sahadeva were born from Pāṇḍu and Mādrī together, both slain.

कर्णः कुन्त्यां हि कन्यायां जातो दुर्योधाश्रितः । कुरुपाण्डवयोर्वैरन्दैवयोगाद्बभूव ह ।।
karṇaḥ kuntyāṃ hi kanyāyāṃ jāto duryodhāśritaḥ | kurupāṇḍavayorvairandaivayogādbabhūva ha ||
Karna was born to Kuntī as her son and remained under Duryodhana’s protection. Enmity between the Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas arose inevitably from this birth.

दुर्योधनो जतुगृहे पाण्डवानदहत कुधीः । दग्धागाराद्विनिष्क्रान्ता मातृपृष्टास्तु पाण्डवाः ।।
duryodhano jatugṛhe pāṇḍavānadahat kudhīḥ | dagdhāgārādviniṣkrāntā mātṛpṛṣṭāstu pāṇḍavāḥ ||
Duryodhana set fire to the house of lac; the Pāṇḍavas barely escaped the burning chamber by breaking through, and the Pāṇḍavas were pressed against their mother (i.e., sought shelter at their mother’s breast).

ततस्तु एकचक्रायां ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने । मुनिवेषाः स्थिताः सर्वे निहत्य वकराक्षसम ।।
tatastu ekacakrāyāṃ brāhmaṇasya niveśane | muniveṣāḥ sthitāḥ sarve nihatya vakarākṣasam ||
Then, at the enclosure of a single sacrificial circle where the brahman dwelt, all in the guise of sages stood and slew Vakarākṣasa (the Rakṣasa named Vakarākṣas).

ययौः पाञ्चालविषयं द्रौपद्यास्ते स्वयम्वरे । सम्प्राप्ता बाहुवेधेन द्रौपदी पञ्चपाण्डवैः ।।
yayauḥ pāñcālaviṣayaṃ draupadyāste svayamvare | samprāptā bāhuvedhena draupadī pañcapāṇḍavaiḥ ||
Those who went to the realm of Pāñcāla—Draupadī herself chosen in marriage—were attained by the Pāṇḍavas when she was pierced by arrows of the five Pāṇḍavas.

अर्धराज्यं ततः प्राप्ता ज्ञाता दुर्योधनादिभिः । गाण्डीवञ्च धनुर्दिव्यं पावकाद्रथमुत्तमम ।।
ardharājyaṃ tataḥ prāptā jñātā duryodhanādibhiḥ | gāṇḍīvañca dhanurdivyaṃ pāvakādrathamuttamam ||
Then they gained half the kingdom, known to be taken from Duryodhana and others; and the Gandiva, the divine bow, the foremost chariot and the fire-like excellent chariot-bow.

सारथिञ्चार्जुनः सङ्ख्ये कृष्णमक्षय्यशायकान । ब्रह्मास्त्रादींस तथा द्रोणात्सर्वे शस्त्रविशारदाः ।।
sārathiñcārjunaḥ saṅkhye kṛṣṇamakṣayyaśāyakān | brahmāstrādīṃs tathā droṇātsarve śastraviśāradāḥ ||
Arjuna served as charioteer; Krishna stayed on the inexhaustible couch. All were masters of weapons, from Brahmastra onward, taught by Drona.

कृष्णेन सो ऽर्जुनो वह्निं खाण्डवे समतर्पयत । इन्द्रवृष्टिं वारयंश च शरवर्षेण पाण्डवः ।।
kṛṣṇena so 'rjuno vahniṃ khāṇḍave samatarpayat | indravṛṣṭiṃ vārayaṃś ca śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ ||
With Krishna, Arjuna appeased the fire in Khanda; the Pandavas invoked Indra’s rain and with showers of arrows wrought protection.

जिता दिशः पाण्डवैश च राज्यञ्चक्रे युधिष्ठिरः । बहुस्वर्णं राजसूयं न सेहे तं सुयोधनः ।।
jitā diśaḥ pāṇḍavaiś ca rājyañcakre yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | bahusvarṇaṃ rājasūyaṃ na sehe taṃ suyodhanaḥ ||
Yudhishtira conquered the regions and the kingdoms of the Pandavas; he established many golden royal-sacrifices, which Suyodhana would not tolerate.

भ्रात्रा दुःशासनेनोक्तः कर्णेन प्राप्तभूतिना । द्यूतकार्ये शकुनिना द्यूतेन स युधिष्ठिरम ।।
bhrātrā duḥśāsanenoktaḥ karṇena prāptabhūtinā | dyūtakārye śakuninā dyūtena sa yudhiṣṭhiram ||
His brothers were spoken ill of by Duhshasana; Karna had gained wealth; Shakuni arranged the gambling, and by gambling Yudhishtira was ruined.

अजयत्तस्य राज्यञ्च सभास्थो माययाहसत । जितो युधिष्ठिरो भ्रातृयुक्तश्चारण्यकं ययौ ।।
ajayattasya rājyañca sabhāstho māyayāhasat | jito yudhiṣṭhiro bhrātṛyuktaścāraṇyakaṃ yayau ||
He conquered that kingdom and sat in the assembly, smiling with illusion. Victorious, Yudhiṣṭhira, accompanied by his brothers, went to the forest.

वने द्वादशवर्षाणि प्रतिज्ञातानि सो ऽनयत । अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि भोजयन पूर्ववत द्विजान ।।
vane dvādaśavarṣāṇi pratijñātāni so 'nayat | aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi bhojayan pūrvavat dvijān ||
He kept his vow to dwell in the forest for twelve years. He led eighty-eight thousand twice-born, as before, feeding them.

सधौम्यो द्रौपदीषष्ठस्ततः प्रायाद्विराटकम । कङ्को द्विजो ह्य अविज्ञातो राजा भीमोथ सूपकृत ।।
sadhaumyo draupadīṣaṣṭhastataḥ prāyādvirāṭakam | kaṅko dvijo hy avijñāto rājā bhīmotha sūpakṛt ||
At the Sādhaumya (place) Draupadī was the sixth; then Virāṭa's son nearly—Kanka, a twice-born, unknown, and the king Bhīma-made sūpaka (fan-maker).

बृहन्नलार्जुनो भार्या सैरिन्ध्री यमजौ तथा । अन्यनाम्ना भीमसेनः कीचकञ्चाबधीन्निशि ।।
bṛhannalārjuno bhāryā sairindhrī yamajau tathā | anyanāmnā bhīmasenaḥ kīcakañcābadhīnniśi ||
Bṛhannalā, Arjuna, his wives Sairindhrī and the twins; by other names Bhīmasena, and Kīcaka was bound at night.

द्रौपदीं हर्तुकामं तं अर्जुनश्चाजयत कुरून । कुर्वतो गोग्रहादींश च तैर ज्ञाताः पाण्डवा अथ ।।
draupadīṃ hartukāmaṃ taṃ arjunaścājayat kurūn | kurvato gograhādīṃś ca tair jñātāḥ pāṇḍavā atha ||
Wanting to seize Draupadī, Arjuna also subdued that Kuru. While capturing cow-robbers and others, thus the Pāṇḍavas became known.

सुभद्रा कृष्णभगिनी अर्जुनात्समजीजनत । अभिमन्युन्ददौ तस्मै विराटश्चोत्तरां सुताम ।।
subhadrā kṛṣṇabhaginī arjunātsamajījanat | abhimanyundadau tasmai virāṭaścottarāṃ sutām ||
Subhadrā, Krishna’s sister, was born to Arjuna. To him were born Abhimanyu and, later, Virāta’s daughter Uttarā.

सप्ताक्षौहिणीश आसीद्धर्मराजो रणाय सः । कृष्णो दूतोब्रवीद गत्वा दुर्योधनममर्षणम ।।
saptākṣauhiṇīśa āsīddharmarājo raṇāya saḥ | kṛṣṇo dūtobravīd gatvā duryodhanamamarṣaṇam ||
The king Dharmarāja marshaled seven Aksha-division forces for battle. Krishna, as envoy, went and spoke to Duryodhana, who would not relent.

एकादशाक्षौहिणीशं नृपं दुर्योधनं तदा । युधिष्ठिरायार्धराज्यं देहि ग्रामांश च पञ्च वा ।।
ekādaśākṣauhiṇīśaṃ nṛpaṃ duryodhanaṃ tadā | yudhiṣṭhirāyārdharājyaṃ dehi grāmāṃś ca pañca vā ||
Then Duryodhana said to Yudhiṣṭhira: give that king Duryodhana eleven Aksha-divisions, half the kingdom to Yudhiṣṭhira, and five villages.

युध्यस्व वा वचः श्रुत्वा कृष्णमाह सुयोधनः । भूसूच्यग्रं न दास्यामि योत्स्ये सङ्ग्रहणोद्यतः ।।
yudhyasva vā vacaḥ śrutvā kṛṣṇamāha suyodhanaḥ | bhūsūcyagraṃ na dāsyāmi yotsye saṅgrahaṇodyataḥ ||
Suyodhana (Duryodhana) heard the words and said: fight if you must, Krishna—I will not give the foremost land mark; I will fight to collect it.

विश्वरूपन्दर्शयित्वा अधृष्यं विदुरार्चितः । प्रागाद्युधिष्ठिरं प्राह योधयैनं सुयोधनम ।।
viśvarūpandarśayitvā adhṛṣyaṃ vidurārcitaḥ | prāgādyudhiṣṭhiraṃ prāha yodhayainaṃ suyodhanam ||
Having shown his universal form, revered by Vidura and unseen before, he addressed Yudhiṣṭhira: fight that warrior Suyodhana.
