हरिवंशम्प्रवक्ष्यामि विष्णुनाभ्यम्बुजादजः । ब्रह्मणोत्रिस्ततः सोमः सोमाज्जातः पुरूरवाः ।।
harivaṃśampravakṣyāmi viṣṇunābhyambujādajaḥ | brahmaṇotristataḥ somaḥ somājjātaḥ purūravāḥ ||
I shall recount the lineage of Hari: born from Vishnu’s navel was Brahma, from him sprang the three (created), Soma (the moon), from Soma was born Pururava.

तस्मादायुरभूत्तस्मान नहुषो ऽतो ययातिकः । यदुञ्च तुर्वसुन्तस्माद देवयानी व्यजायत ।।
tasmādāyurabhūttasmān nahuṣo 'to yayātikaḥ | yaduñca turvasuntasmād devayānī vyajāyata ||
From him came Nahusha, then Yayati; Yadu and Turvasu were born thereafter; from them sprang the divine lineages.

druhyaṃ cānuṃ ca pūruṃ ca śarmiṣṭhā vārṣaparvaṇī | yadoḥ kule yādavāś ca vasudevastaduttamaḥ ||
Dravya, Anu, Puru, Sharmistha, Varsha and Parvani — in the Yadu clan were the Yadavas and foremost among them was Vasudeva.

भुवो भारावतारार्थं देवक्यां वसुदेवतः । हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्राः षड्गर्भा योगनिद्रया ।।
bhuvo bhārāvatārārthaṃ devakyāṃ vasudevataḥ | hiraṇyakaśipoḥ putrāḥ ṣaḍgarbhā yoganidrayā ||
To manifest the earth’s burden, from Vasudeva in Devaki were born the sons of Hiranyakashipu — six foetuses — by yogic slumber.

विष्णुप्रयुक्तया नीता देवकीजठरं पुरा । अभूच्च सप्तमो गर्भो देवक्या जठराद बलः ।।
viṣṇuprayuktayā nītā devakījaṭharaṃ purā | abhūcca saptamo garbho devakyā jaṭharād balaḥ ||
Once, by Vishnu’s influence, Devakī’s womb was drawn in; then the seventh embryo vanished from her womb.

saṅkrāmito 'bhūdrohiṇyāṃ rauhiṇeyastato hariḥ | kṛṣṇāṣṭamyāñca nabhasi ardharātre caturbhujaḥ ||
The Hari who entered Rohiṇī became the Rohiṇeya; at Krishna’s eighth night he appeared in the sky, four-armed at midnight.

देवक्या वसुदेवेन स्तुतो बालो द्विबाहुकः । वसुदेवः कंसभयाद यशोदाशयने ऽनयत ।।
devakyā vasudevena stuto bālo dvibāhukaḥ | vasudevaḥ kaṃsabhayād yaśodāśayane 'nayat ||
Devakī praised by Vasudeva, the child with two arms; Vasudeva, fearing Kamsa, carried him to Yasodā’s care.

यशोदाबालिकां गृह्य देवकीशयने ऽनयत । कंसो बालध्वनिं श्रुत्वा ताञ्चिक्षेप शिलातले ।।
yaśodābālikāṃ gṛhya devakīśayane 'nayat | kaṃso bāladhvaniṃ śrutvā tāñcikṣepa śilātale ||
Yasodā, taking the baby girl, brought her to Devakī’s chamber. Hearing the child’s cry, Kamsa hurled her against the stone floor.

वारितोपि स देवक्या मृत्युर्गर्भोष्टमो मम । श्रुत्वाशरीरिणीं वाचं मत्तो गर्भास्तु मारिताः ।।
vāritopi sa devakyā mṛtyurgarbhoṣṭamo mama | śrutvāśarīriṇīṃ vācaṃ matto garbhāstu māritāḥ ||
Even death for Devakī was averted; the eighth womb of mine was saved. Hearing the disembodied voice, maddened, those unborn ones were killed.

समर्पितास्तु देवक्या विवाहसमयेरिताः । सा क्षिप्ता बालिका कंसम आकाशस्थाब्रवीदिदम ।।
samarpitāstu devakyā vivāhasamayeritāḥ | sā kṣiptā bālikā kaṃsam ākāśasthābravīdidam ||
Devakyā, given away at the time of marriage, was cast; the girl hurled her and the one in the sky said this.

किं मया क्षिप्तया कंस जातो यस्त्वां बधिष्यति । सर्वस्वभूतो देवानां भूभारहरणाय सः ।।
kiṃ mayā kṣiptayā kaṃsa jāto yastvāṃ badhiṣyati | sarvasvabhūto devānāṃ bhūbhāraharaṇāya saḥ ||
By my throwing was Kaṃsa born who would kill you? He is the all-consuming one among gods, remover of the burden of the earth.

इत्युक्त्वा सा च शुम्भादीन हत्वेन्द्रेण च संस्तुता । आर्या दुर्गा वेदगर्भा अम्बिका भद्रकाल्यपि ।।
ityuktvā sā ca śumbhādīn hatvendreṇa ca saṃstutā | āryā durgā vedagarbhā ambikā bhadrakālyapi ||
So saying she praised Shumbha and others and the slayer Indra. Noble Durga, womb of the Vedas, Ambikā, auspicious time herself.

भद्रा क्षेम्या क्षेमकरी नैकबाहुर नमामि ताम । त्रिसन्ध्यं यः पठेन्नाम सर्वान कामानवाप्नुयात ।।
bhadrā kṣemyā kṣemakarī naikabāhur namāmi tām | trisandhyaṃ yaḥ paṭhennāma sarvān kāmānavāpnuyāt ||
I bow to that auspicious, prosperous, grantor of safety, with many arms. Whoever recites this thrice-daily by name attains all desires.

कंसो ऽपि पूतनादींश च प्रेषयद्बालनाशने । यशोदापतिनन्दाय वसुदेवेन चार्पितौ ।।
kaṃso 'pi pūtanādīṃś ca preṣayadbālanāśane | yaśodāpatinandāya vasudevena cārpitau ||
Even Kaṃsa and Pūtanā were sent to destroy children; for pleasing Yashodā's husband they were presented by Vasudeva.

रक्षणाय च कंसादेर भीतेनैव हि गोकुले । रामकृष्णौ चेरतुस्तौ गोभिर्गोपालकैः सह ।।
rakṣaṇāya ca kaṃsāder bhītenaiva hi gokule | rāmakṛṣṇau ceratustau gobhirgopālakaiḥ saha ||
To protect Gokula from the fear of Kamsa and others, Ram and Krishna went there together along with cow-herds and cows.

सर्वस्य जगतः पालौ गोपालौ तौ बभूवतुः । कृष्णश्चोलूखले बद्धो दाम्ना व्यग्रयशोदया ।।
sarvasya jagataḥ pālau gopālau tau babhūvatuḥ | kṛṣṇaścolūkhale baddho dāmnā vyagrayaśodayā ||
Those two became the guardians of the whole world; Krishna, bound in a wooden cage, was exposed to the harsh rope and harsh treatment.

यमलार्जुनमध्ये ऽगाद भग्नौ च यमलार्जुनौ । परिवृत्तश च शकटः पादक्षेपात स्तनार्थिना ।।
yamalārjunamadhye 'gād bhagnau ca yamalārjunau | parivṛttaś ca śakaṭaḥ pādakṣepāt stanārthinā ||
Between the twins Arjuna arrived; the two twins were broken. A turned cart, overturned, had fallen with its foot cast for the sake of the breast-afflicted woman.

पूतना स्तनपानेन सा हता हन्तुमुद्यता । वृन्दावनगतः कृष्णः कालियं यमुनाह्रदात ।।
pūtanā stanapānena sā hatā hantumudyatā | vṛndāvanagataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kāliyaṃ yamunāhradāt ||
Putana, attempting to kill by sucking the breast, was slain. Krishna, having gone to Vrindavan, subdued Kaliya in the Yamuna river.

जित्वा निःसार्य चाब्धिस्थञ चकार बलसंस्तुतः । क्षेमं तालवनं चक्रे हत्वा धेनुकगर्दभं ।।
jitvā niḥsārya cābdhisthañ cakāra balasaṃstutaḥ | kṣemaṃ tālavanaṃ cakre hatvā dhenukagardabhaṃ ||
Having conquered and cast out the worthless ones, he praised the strong; he secured the palm grove, killing the cow-demon and the donkey-demon.

अरिष्टवृषभं हत्वा केशिनं हयरूपिणम । शक्रोत्सवं परित्यज्य कारितो गोत्रयज्ञकः ।।
ariṣṭavṛṣabhaṃ hatvā keśinaṃ hayarūpiṇam | śakrotsavaṃ parityajya kārito gotrayajñakaḥ ||
Having killed the bull-shaped Arishta and the maned horse-like one, abandoning Indra’s festival he performed the clan-sacrifice.

पर्वतं धारयित्वा च शक्राद्वृष्टिर निवारिता । नमस्कृतो महेन्द्रेण गोविन्दो ऽथार्जुनोर्पितः ।।
parvataṃ dhārayitvā ca śakrādvṛṣṭir nivāritā | namaskṛto mahendreṇa govindo 'thārjunorpitaḥ ||
Holding up the mountain and thereby stopping Indra’s rain, Govinda bowed to Mahendra and was then offered to Arjuna.

इन्द्रोत्सवस्तु तुष्टेन भूयः कृष्णेन कारितः । रथस्थो मथुराञ्चागात कंसोक्ताक्रूरसंस्तुतः ।।
indrotsavastu tuṣṭena bhūyaḥ kṛṣṇena kāritaḥ | rathastho mathurāñcāgāt kaṃsoktākrūrasaṃstutaḥ ||
Pleased with Indra’s festival, again the festival was celebrated by Krishna; seated on the chariot he went to Mathura, praised as the cruel Kamsa’s slayer.

गोपीभिरनुरक्ताभिः क्रीडिताभिर निरीक्षितः । रजकं चाप्रयच्छन्तं हत्वा वस्त्राणि चाग्रहीत ।।
gopībhiranuraktābhiḥ krīḍitābhir nirīkṣitaḥ | rajakaṃ cāprayacchantaṃ hatvā vastrāṇi cāgrahīt ||
Observed playing with gopis who loved him, he killed the washerman who refused to give garments and seized the clothes.

सह रामेण मालाभृन मालाकारे वरन्ददौ । दत्तानुलेपनां कुब्जाम ऋजुं चक्रे ऽहनद गजं ।।
saha rāmeṇa mālābhṛn mālākāre varandadau | dattānulepanāṃ kubjām ṛjuṃ cakre 'hanad gajaṃ ||
Together with Rama he adorned the hunchback with garlands and ornaments; having applied what was given, he made the stooped one straight and killed the roaring elephant.

मत्तं कुवलयापीडं द्वारि रङ्गं प्रविश्य च । कंसादीनां पश्यतां च मञ्चस्थानां नियुद्धकं ।।
mattaṃ kuvalayāpīḍaṃ dvāri raṅgaṃ praviśya ca | kaṃsādīnāṃ paśyatāṃ ca mañcasthānāṃ niyuddhakaṃ ||
Entering the arena drunk on kuvalaya-juice, and passing through the gate, he saw Kamsa and others, and the fighters on the stage.

चक्रे चाणूरमल्लेन मुष्टिकेन बलो ऽकरोत । चाणूरमुष्टिकौ ताभ्यां हतौ मल्लौ तथापरे ।।
cakre cāṇūramallena muṣṭikena balo 'karot | cāṇūramuṣṭikau tābhyāṃ hatau mallau tathāpare ||
Chāṇūra the wrestler struck with a fist and displayed strength; by the blows of Chāṇūra and the fist both wrestlers fell, and others likewise.

मथुराधिपतिं कंसं हत्वा तत्पितरं हरिः । चक्रे यादवराजानम अस्तिप्राप्ती च कंसगे ।।
mathurādhipatiṃ kaṃsaṃ hatvā tatpitaraṃ hariḥ | cakre yādavarājānam astiprāptī ca kaṃsage ||
Having slain Kamsa, the lord of Mathura, and his father Hari, the Yadava king seized the headgear at Kamsa's arena.

जरासन्धस्य ते पुत्र्यौ जरासन्धस्तदीरितः । चक्रे स मथुरारोधं यादवैर युयुधे शरैः ।।
jarāsandhasya te putryau jarāsandhastadīritaḥ | cakre sa mathurārodhaṃ yādavair yuyudhe śaraiḥ ||
Those two daughters of Jarāsandha — as declared by Jarāsandha — he slew; he then made an assault on Mathura and the Yadavas fought with arrows.

रामकृष्णौ च मथुरां त्यक्त्वा गोमन्तमागतौ । जरासन्धं विजित्याजौ पौण्ड्रकं वासुदेवकं ।।
rāmakṛṣṇau ca mathurāṃ tyaktvā gomantamāgatau | jarāsandhaṃ vijityājau pauṇḍrakaṃ vāsudevakaṃ ||
Rama and Krishna, abandoning Mathura, reached Gomanta; having conquered Jarāsandha they then seized Paundraka and Vāsudeva.

पुरीं च द्वारकां कृत्वा न्यवसद यादवैर वृतः । भौमं तु नरकं हत्वा तेनानीताश च कन्यकाः ।।
purīṃ ca dvārakāṃ kṛtvā nyavasad yādavair vṛtaḥ | bhaumaṃ tu narakaṃ hatvā tenānītāś ca kanyakāḥ ||
Having made a city and Dvārakā, he dwelt surrounded by Yādavas. Having slain Bhauma (Balarāma) and Naraka, those maidens were brought by him.

देवगन्धर्वयक्षाणां ता उवाच जनार्दनः । षोदशस्त्रीसहस्राणि रुक्मिण्याद्यास तथाष्ट च ।।
devagandharvayakṣāṇāṃ tā uvāca janārdanaḥ | ṣodaśastrīsahasrāṇi rukmiṇyādyās tathāṣṭa ca ||
To the gods, gandharvas and yakshas he (Janārdana) spoke: sixteen thousand women, beginning with Rukminī, and eight others.

सत्यभामासमायुक्तो गरुडे नरकार्दनः । मणिशैलं सरत्रञ्च इन्द्रं जित्वा हरिर्दिवि ।।
satyabhāmāsamāyukto garuḍe narakārdanaḥ | maṇiśailaṃ saratrañca indraṃ jitvā harirdivi ||
Accompanied by Satyabhāmā, slayer of men on Garuḍa, Hari in the sky having conquered Indra, the jewel-mountain and Saratra.

पारिजातं समानीय सत्यभामागृहे ऽकरोत । सान्दीपनेश च शस्त्रास्त्रं ज्ञात्वा तद्बालकं ददौ ।।
pārijātaṃ samānīya satyabhāmāgṛhe 'karot | sāndīpaneś ca śastrāstraṃ jñātvā tadbālakaṃ dadau ||
Having brought the Parijāta to Satyabhāmā's house he performed it; knowing the weapons of Sāndīpana, he gave that boy to him.

जित्वा पञ्चजनं दैत्यं यमेन च सुपूजितः । अबधीत कालयवनं मुचुकुन्देन पूजितः ।।
jitvā pañcajanaṃ daityaṃ yamena ca supūjitaḥ | abadhīt kālayavanaṃ mucukundena pūjitaḥ ||
Having conquered the five-tribe demon and being worshipped by Yama, he bound Kālayavana and was worshipped by Muchukunda.

वसुदेवं देवकीञ्च भक्तविप्रांश च सोर्च्यत । रेवत्यां बलभद्राच्च यज्ञाते निशठोन्मुकौ ।।
vasudevaṃ devakīñca bhaktaviprāṃś ca sorcyat | revatyāṃ balabhadrācca yajñāte niśaṭhonmukau ||
Vasudeva, Devakī and the devotees and brahmanas were worshipped; in Revati were Balabhadra and others, and Yajñāta stood with a radiant face.

From Krishna came Shambho; in Jambavati others were born—sons from different mothers.

māyāvatī matsyamadhye dṛṣṭvā svaṃ patimādarāt | papoṣa sā taṃ covāca ratiste 'haṃ patirmama ||
Māyāvatī, seeing her husband among the fish, respectfully embraced her lord and said to him: 'I am your wife; relish is mine, O my husband.'

kāmastvaṃ śambhunānaṅgaḥ kṛtohaṃ śambareṇa ca | hṛtā na tasya patnī tvaṃ māyājñaḥ śambaraṃ jahi ||
Desire, you are Shambhu's beloved; I was made by Shambhara. His wife was not taken from him—O Maya-knower, abandon Shambara.

तच छ्रुत्वा शम्बरं हत्वा प्रद्युम्नः सह भार्यया । मायावत्या ययौ कृष्णं कृष्णो हृष्टो ऽथ रुक्मिणी ।।
tac chrutvā śambaraṃ hatvā pradyumnaḥ saha bhāryayā | māyāvatyā yayau kṛṣṇaṃ kṛṣṇo hṛṣṭo 'tha rukmiṇī ||
Hearing that, Pradyumna, having slain Shambara with his wife and appearing as if by illusion, went to Krishna; Krishna, rejoicing, then went to Rukmini.

प्रद्युम्नादनिरुद्धोभूदुषापतिरुदारधीः । बाणो बलिसुतस्तस्य सुतोषा शोणितं पुरं ।।
pradyumnādaniruddhobhūduṣāpatirudāradhīḥ | bāṇo balisutastasya sutoṣā śoṇitaṃ puraṃ ||
From Pradyumna (came) Aniruddha—he was cruel, of generous mind; the powerful son of Bali, his son, struck the city's blood with delight. (Literal: arrow Balī's son...—context: difficult)

तपसा शिवपुत्रो ऽभूत मायूरध्वजपातितः । युद्धं प्राप्स्यसि वाण त्वं वाणं तुष्टः शिवोभ्यधात ।।
tapasā śivaputro 'bhūt māyūradhvajapātitaḥ | yuddhaṃ prāpsyasi vāṇa tvaṃ vāṇaṃ tuṣṭaḥ śivobhyadhāt ||
Born of penance, son of Shiva, the peacock-bannered (one) had fallen. ‘You will obtain battle, O Vāṇa; may you, Vāṇa, be pleased—Shiva conferred (this).’

शिवेन क्रीडतीं गौरीं दृष्ट्वोषा सस्पृहा पतौ । तामाह गौरी भर्ता ते निशि सुप्तेति दर्शनात ।।
śivena krīḍatīṃ gaurīṃ dṛṣṭvoṣā saspṛhā patau | tāmāha gaurī bhartā te niśi supteti darśanāt ||
Seeing Gauri playing with Shiva, desirous, Oṣā and Saspṛhā fell. He said: ‘Gauri, your husband will appear to you at night while you sleep.’

वैशाखमासद्वादश्यां पुंसो भर्ता भविष्यति । गौर्युक्ता हर्षिता चोषा गृहे सुप्ता ददर्श तं ।।
vaiśākhamāsadvādaśyāṃ puṃso bhartā bhaviṣyati | gauryuktā harṣitā coṣā gṛhe suptā dadarśa taṃ ||
On the twelfth of Vaishākha month a husband will be (yours). Oṣā, joined with Gauri and joyful, saw him sleeping at home.

आत्मना सङ्गतं ज्ञात्वा तत्सख्या चित्रलेखया । लिखिताद्वै चित्रपटादनिरुद्धं समानयत ।।
ātmanā saṅgataṃ jñātvā tatsakhyā citralekhayā | likhitādvai citrapaṭādaniruddhaṃ samānayat ||
Knowing what was associated with himself, he equated that friend with the painted inscription; from the writing he made it like a painted panel and rendered it immovable.

कृष्णपौत्रं द्वारकातो दुहिता वाणमन्त्रिणः । कुम्भाण्डस्यानिरुद्धोगाद्रराम ह्य उषया सह ।।
kṛṣṇapautraṃ dvārakāto duhitā vāṇamantriṇaḥ | kumbhāṇḍasyāniruddhogādrarāma hy uṣayā saha ||
From Dvaraka came Krishna’s grandson, and the minister’s daughter; from the pot-demon (Kumbhāṇḍa) came Aniruddha, and Rama with Usha accompanied them.

वाणध्वजस्य सम्पातै रक्षिभिः स निवेदितः । अनिरुद्धस्य वाणेन युद्धमासीत्सदारुणम ।।
vāṇadhvajasya sampātai rakṣibhiḥ sa niveditaḥ | aniruddhasya vāṇena yuddhamāsītsadāruṇam ||
The standard of Vana was struck by blows and reported by the protectors; with Vana’s missile, Aniruddha fought a fierce battle.

श्रुत्वा तु नारदात कृष्णः प्रद्युम्नबलभद्रवान । गरुडस्थोथ जित्वाग्नीन ज्वरं माहेश्वरन्तथा ।।
śrutvā tu nāradāt kṛṣṇaḥ pradyumnabalabhadravān | garuḍasthotha jitvāgnīn jvaraṃ māheśvarantathā ||
Hearing Narada, Krishna, Pradyumna, Bala, and Bhadravan, situated on Garuda, had overcome fire and fever; likewise the great Lord of Lords had (overcome) a fever.

हरिशङ्करयोर्युद्धं बभूवाथ शराशरि । नन्दिविनायकस्कन्दमुखास्तार्क्षादिभिर्जिताः ।।
hariśaṅkarayoryuddhaṃ babhūvātha śarāśari | nandivināyakaskandamukhāstārkṣādibhirjitāḥ ||
There was a battle between Hari and Shankara of arrows and shafts; the hosts — Nandi, Vinayaka, Skanda, and others like Tārkṣa — were all conquered.

जृम्भते शङ्करे नष्टे जृम्भणास्त्रेण विष्णुना । छिन्नं सहस्रं बाहूनां रुद्रेणाभयमर्थितम ।।
jṛmbhate śaṅkare naṣṭe jṛmbhaṇāstreṇa viṣṇunā | chinnaṃ sahasraṃ bāhūnāṃ rudreṇābhayamarthitam ||
When Śaṅkara shook (the universe) it was destroyed by Viṣṇu’s thunderbolt; a thousand arms were severed, their protection granted by Rudra.

विष्णुना जीवितो वाणो द्विबाहुः प्राब्रवीच्छिवम । त्वया यदभयं दत्तं वाणस्यास्य मया च तत ।।
viṣṇunā jīvito vāṇo dvibāhuḥ prābravīcchivam | tvayā yadabhayaṃ dattaṃ vāṇasyāsya mayā ca tat ||
Viṣṇu, alive, spoke with two arms to Śiva: ‘The protection you gave to this Vāṇa I and you bestowed.’

आवयोर नास्ति भेदो वै भेदी नरकमाप्नुयात । शिवाद्यैः पूजितो विष्णुः सोनिरुद्ध उषादियुक ।।
āvayor nāsti bhedo vai bhedī narakamāpnuyāt | śivādyaiḥ pūjito viṣṇuḥ soniruddha uṣādiyuk ||
There is no difference between us two; the differentiator will attain hell. Viṣṇu, worshipped with Śiva and others, is the lord with medicinal herbs and dawn.

द्वारकान्तु गतो रेमे उग्रसेनादियादवैः । अनिरुद्धात्मजो वज्रो मार्कण्डेयात्तु सर्ववित ।।
dvārakāntu gato reme ugrasenādiyādavaiḥ | aniruddhātmajo vajro mārkaṇḍeyāttu sarvavit ||
Having gone to Dvārakā were Rema, Ugrāsena and the like. Aniruddha’s son Vajra, and Markandeya—he knew all.

बलभद्रः प्रलम्बघ्नो यमुनाकर्षणो ऽभवत । द्विविदस्य कपेर्भेत्ता कौरवोन्मादनाशनः ।।
balabhadraḥ pralambaghno yamunākarṣaṇo 'bhavat | dvividasya kaperbhettā kauravonmādanāśanaḥ ||
Balabhadra demolished hanging foes; he drew the Yamunā. Kapi-splitter of two kinds, devourer of Kaurava madness.

हरी रेमेनेकमूर्तो रुक्मिण्यादिभिरीश्वरः । पुत्रानुत्पादयामास त्वसंख्यातान स यादवान । हरिवंशं पठेत यः स प्राप्तकामो हरिं व्रजेत ।।
harī remenekamūrto rukmiṇyādibhirīśvaraḥ | putrānutpādayāmāsa tvasaṃkhyātān sa yādavān | harivaṃśaṃ paṭhet yaḥ sa prāptakāmo hariṃ vrajet ||
Hari, the one form of Remeṇa, the lord born of Rukmīṇī and others, caused sons to be born; he became a Yādava as counted. Whoever reads the Hari-vaṁśa will attain Hari and fulfill his desires.
